Set against the backdrop of post-World War II transition, our story unfolds within the storied halls of an unnamed Highland battalion. The Regiment were in the line and had been badly mauled in the evening and shelled all night. At dawn the next day it was foggy, and the Germans were expected to attack. He told me the thought they were in for a rough time.
Then they heard the sound of pipes as another Scottish regiment marched up to the line to support them. He said the pipes were so stirring that everyone felt a foot taller.
The Germans didn’t conduct a dawn attack, after hearing the pipes.

This film must have been written by a veteran. Viewed from today, it seems to be a study of PTSD. Two men trying to find their way in peace time after a long and painful war. One trying to deal with the trauma of being held as a POW by the Japanese. The other dealing with the ghosts acquired through years of combat. Both scarred by their experiences. Interesting. I'll be thnking about Tunes of Glory for a while.
Modernism has brought softness to fighting men.
It is hard to digest a film like this if one hasn't been in similar situations.

Great film, but the scenario would never happen. An Acting Commanding Officer replaced by a new one would be transferred to Brigade HQ to complete a tour as a staff officer. Leaving him to stew as an officer-without-portfolio would be disastrous, as this film excellently shows.
Yes, in current times…in the era depicted in this film and the book it is adapted from- it was all too common. When one serves the crown, you are subject to the betterment and needs of the service. As an officer in His Majesty’s Army, your duty comes before your personal feelings and pride- always.
Well be sure to go back in time and tell the screenwriter.

It happened more than once particularly after the war. As was the case here from Kennaway's book who was an officer.
I wonder whether Maj/LCol Sinclair might have burnt some bridges through his behavior in the past that landed him in his predicament. While it might not have been unusual for some people to rise through the ranks before commissioning and advancing to CO, he might not have been the best match for a staff appointment or enrolment at a command and staff college. At least it wouldn't surprise me if some of the higher-ups would have thought that way.
Tragic and sad. The pipes and drums. All victims, and no heroes. I've seen this movie over and over again. Alec Guinness and John Mills, a pair of wonderful and powerful actors. Thanks for posting.
In the original script Guinnness and Mills were going to play opposite roles, with their acting skills they would have pulled it off I think but having said that I feel this was the best outcome. The characters are unforgettable.

A thousand years after I first saw this movie, I found myself serving within a Regiment that had pipes and drums. I well remember the first time I saw them play at dinner.The long forgotten movie flowed back. And we did bang the table in appreciation. Good days.

I remember seeing this particular film years ago on TV - but it had a different title - "Tunes of Glory".

On my first visit to Scotland I toured Sterling Castle where this was filmed!
Actually it was not filmed at the castle but on a set.
The Argyles Col. would not let it happen. And he was in charge of Sterling Castle. FYI it had me fooled as well. However only recently did I see the director and the writer in an older production talking about this very thing.
I thought I saw all of Sir Alex’s films until now. This one struck chords very deep.
My Regimental Pipes and Drums were the Pipeband on this film. The Pipes & Drums of the 1st Bn London Scottish ( a Territorial Army Bn )

After the first days of shooting the CO of the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders who were based at the castle then. He thought it would be too disruptive to the daily operations of the regiment.
Yet another case of the opening credits being cut out, and now these bootleggers attach fake titles. This film is of course "Tunes of Glory"

Do not forget the secondary a thertiary characters, they all play a role in this well conceived tragedy. So well that seems to me based on real facts.
Lots of terrible over acting here. Probably Guinness's worst ever acting performance and one of John Mills's best. Very dated of course and of its time. The script is good.
