tip for those with top open tanks is to first let them see your hand in front of the tank once they see you slowly move your hand up the front of glass while they watch it going up then slowly lower hand down in tank that way they know your comming for them and in time they will learn to notice food in your hand or not so they know if food time or holding time

I was shocked at how fast my 2 leos tamed/got used to our family. We got 2 males (housed in separate enclosures), both 3 months old when they came home. They have very different personalities. I believe the top 2 reasons they are doing so well is 1 their enclosures are in the living room where most of our houses activities take place and 2 we have NEVER forced them to be held. Our leos love to observe our activities. I was ready to move them to a less active space if I noticed the activity bothered them but I'm certain it is a positive. When it comes to holding them if we offer a hand and they walk away so do we. We only pick them up when they voluntarily crawl onto us. It's not very often that they turn us down. We are respectful of their wishes and I believe that makes them comfortable with us. When we have them out we give light touches to feet, backs, chins etc so that if something were to happen like stuck shed they would already be used to touch and it would not scare them. We do tong feed them quite a bit just because it helps keep the enclosures cleaner. That was a good ice breaker before offering them our hand for holding. Now only two months after getting them they both initiative holding by coming up to the front glass to get our attention.
Hi Jessica. I can’t thank you enough for this video. I realize it’s a few years old, but this info is brand new to those of us who just acquired our precious leopard geckos. Especially,as you indicated, us first time reptile parents. As common sense as this should have been to me it was incredibly informative and helpful. I’ve rescued many dogs over the years and I’ve used similar techniques with every one so I don’t know why some of them didn’t come innately with my leo, Coffeebean, I guess because I’m a first timer, but with every one you talked about I heard bells going off in my head. Thank you again SO MUCH. I’m off to watch the second part now.
I don’t currently have a front opening enclosure because they can be very expensive, and the way I help my gecko distinguish between my hand and food is by feeding them outside the enclosure, I take them out and feed them on my desk or floor. I’ll be upgrading at some point but if anyone else has this problem this really helped me
As an aspiring with his first reptile ever, I have easily developed comfort with him. I’m surprised that I didn’t panic or get scared! But I think I need to leave him alone. I sing near his enclosure all the time while I jam to music lol

Very helpful. Thank you. I've had my adult for 6 weeks! He also is just starting to climb into my hand but we have to stay in the tank or he flips out 🤣 Much progress!!! Thank you Jessica!!!!!!!!!!
This is actually hilarious because I do the same exact thing😂😂 I’m literally always singing to my juvenile leopard gecko since I can’t hold him/her right now
My Lottie only eats from my hand it’s so cute. I feel like she’s really comfortable with me because she sleeps out in the open instead of in her hide when I first got her. She was kept in a shoebox by her previous owner for 4 years so it’s surprising how tame she is
I’ve had my girl a little less than a week. First 2 days I didn’t even bother to hand feed her. Now we hand feed and she’s super receptive to my voice. Today I hand fed her and she spent some time with me and I gave her a gently boop/under the chin scratch and she was okay with it. She moved a little but not to get away. After that I stopped and she still came to chill with me. A few hours later I came back to put a heat probe into her enclosure and she came halfway out of her hot hide to see what I was doing 😂
She also accidentally bit me and immediately let go so that was cool LOL. She’s the best, regardless. I hope she enjoys handling, when I have handled her she seemed to enjoy it (when I cleaned out her enclosure and first got her) however she did panic when being picked up, so I’m taking it utterly slow right now
this was very helpful, I got my first leopard gecko today and hes a juvenile, not baby but hes pretty young, and he seems pretty nervous, he does like to look around his big tank and explore but he kinda crawls away when im near. this video made me feel a lot better and gave me some hope for him! thank you
All our beardies and geckos love being held/interacted with but there are times I can tell when they just want to be left alone. Then there are times that I can tell they are definitely trying to get my attention and want out. I love them all so much and they definitely all have their own quirks and likes. I must admit the only beardie egg we've had hatch (we were told they were both males til eggs showed up) likes my cousin more than me and it stings but he only watches them when I'm gone so he gets all the fun stuff. Secretly he's one of my pets I know is plotting my death.
Is this normal? My juvenile leopard gecko have a 30 gallon exo terra front opening tank. When he’s out of his hide or just roaming around, he’ll see himself in the glass reflection and attack it, thinking it’s another gecko. I put a paper towel barrier on the inside of the tank about 3-4 inches tall, so he can’t see himself. How can I fix this? I’m going to make the paper towel barrier temporary if there’s an alternative.
I got a leopard gecko in October. He was delivered very safely and he was super shy. He also moved very slow and was very small. He has been doing amazing in terms of eating gaining weight and overall feeling comfortable. At times, he is now coming up close to the glass and says hi when I go to feed him. The problem is that I'm afraid and I don't want to be but I am. I haven't yet touched his head but my mom has and he got slightly spooked. I feel like he is ready and I want to be ready to to put my hand in there but I'm still scared. And I also have already handled leopard geckos before I just don't know why. The idea if him buting me does concern me slightly but also jusy the fact that he is scared sometimes does too. I'm also worried that if I try to put my hand in after he eats will he think it's a mealworm and if I don't do it then will he be friendly enough. But he looks at me through the glass and I am going to try tommorow. If anyone has read this whole thing and has been in this situation if you have any tips please let me know. Thank you!
I have gotten my gecko from a really good pet place and he’s healthy and everything I’m just scared bc idk if he’ll ever let me pick him up But I’m just getting him used to me at this point I just but my hand in there and let him get used to it the most interaction I’ve had with him is him licking my finger and walking the other way 😂 but I feed him with tongs and make a clicking noise ans he comes right out
You have been so helpful I’m going to get a gecko after I move but I do have a question i don’t know if you have answered this before but when I get a baby leopard gecko should I start it off in my 10 gallon tank or can I put some type of divider in my 20 gallon tank and as it gets bigger introduce more of the tank 🙃
my little Paco (5 months) decided to rag doll my hand skin, i just had to laugh! Doesn't hurt in the slightest, he has a high prey drive so often launches for fingers but he's learning to sniff my hand now. I've gotten him used to me touching every part of him now as well during handling and hes fairly confident and likes to just chill on me now. I have 5 geckos and multiple spiders so its not a new thing for me keeping them.
Wow, thanks for the info! I got a gecko a few days ago and it hides a lot, (They are probably scared) thanks to this video now I can make my leopard gecko trust me!
I have a top opening vivarium. But I only got my leopard gecko this week and I did not know that it might scare it but I only will have this vivarium for a few months
r o n i ! Hi, what I did with my leopard gecko, is make a noise, something like a ttttttttt so when they hear that noise, the associate with u. Just be calm, and keep making noise, bc they get scared if they hear a sudden noise.
Mine is just super curious and overenthusiastic when it comes to food. I do not have a front door tank but I plan to get one when she's bigger. I'm still in the middle of taming her and I feel bad for handling her the first week because I had to bring her to the vet. Boy did she hate me that day and hated the vet even more so 😓 plus she was about to shed so she was even more pissed.

I got my Ember July 25, 2020 and she hid and didn't eat for 5 days her tail and hip bones stuck out like crazy there breeder/vendor at our local reptile expo said she was a little over 3 weeks and eating crickets regularly, I eventually found she was coming out in the evening and going potty in her cold hide. But I question her age she was TINY. I thought I was going to lose her. Finally I started dusting crickets with critical care powder and pulling a back leg off to slow them down and found calciworms (she liked those, they opened the door to other food items for her) she took off shedding and growing fast... to even waiting for her meals I feed her one food item at a time placing it in there for her to catch but she sees me as the bringer of thd yum... I also feed her one of two from the bowl and one from the tong I want her to take it how ever is needed... I never grab for her a few weeks ago she just decided to climb out of her terrarium and climb around on my hands it was soo cool... I got a good look at her under belly a couple weeks ago right after a shed I picked up her moist hide to check her over she put her back claw on my pinky so I slowly lifted to get a good look, ther are no femoral pores starting at all... she is around 5 months will they develop later?

If you’re moving your hand around too much he may think you’re food, if not, you must have a brave gecko since they usually run from anything they find dangerous
Im having a trouble with my leopard gecko and im a bit worried. Ive had mostly bearded dragons. He stays in my room with me. Im not sure on lighting i keep getting told different things. He really doesnt like to be bothered at all. Now my bearded dragons i took them everywhere i did alot of things with them. So this is a change of speed for me. Now im just worried im not a good mommy to him 😒

I haven’t finished the video so idk if you give any advice on this but I’m worried ;-;
Don’t worry too much about it. I would hold peanut with your hand still in the tank if you’re scared. If you decide to take them out of the tank while holding them, keep your fingers under their stomach and your thumb over their back. Maybe keep your other hand by them as well if you’re nervous
is it normal for them to stay in their hides most of the time when you first get them? i got mine end of february and he’s still very skittish and stays in his hide a lot. he’s also a juvenile
Could just be afraid. Make sure the enclosure is in a quiet area of the home with not a lot of traffic. Make sure there’s lots of hiding material like physical hides, plants, cork, etc to make the gecko feel secure

I am currently in the process of getting my own. I am curious what it would look like. Like as in with a juvenile, what the process looks like. Just to get more comfortable myself. I am new to the pet life and I want to feel super prepared so he/she doesn't feel as though i am timid or am a threat.
my gecko jumped out of my hand (he fell on a blanket and was physically fine) after having him for 3 months and now he has like major anxiety. Any ideas on calming him down? Its been like a month since it happened and he wont leave his warm hide ever
great video, suggestion though, always include clips of what you are talking about, maybe a demo. We love seeing the geckos (especially if we don't have one) and also its easier to learn things when we can see them visually instead of listening.

I had my Leo( Leoness for a girl) oops hehe, for cpl weeks before we cld pick him/her up. Now she's just fine!! Thank u!!
I aint scared of getting bit but when leonidas Jumps real fast it scares the hell out of me
I got a leopard gecko in October. Thank you!
I have been reading to my geckos to get them used to my voice, I’ve nearly tamed one of them, but the other one is a bit more scared than the other.
Since I got mine from a pet store, I tong feeded it because I was afraid it was malnourished since it was very young. He’s doing great now!
Im from latinoamerica, from Ecuador, and thanks to your advises i have now 6 geckos
Thanks, i love your videos 😍👌👌
well for a first my gecko doesmt hiss at me i guess thats already a plus
My gecko is on my hand already always when it a baby
Wow, thanks for the info! I got a gecko a few days ago and it hides a lot, (They are probably scared) thanks to this video now I can make my leopard gecko trust me!
Thank you so much! I just got a Gecko. Their name is Giorno! Imma start doing these things
Personally u give a couple of wrong information but for the most part ur amazing I subscribed
Thanks! What do you think I should work on?
@@JessicasAnimalFriends I also have a question will this size terrarium be good for my leo? 36x18x12 in inches?
I have a top opening vivarium. But I only got my leopard gecko this week and I did not know that it might scare it but I only will have this vivarium for a few months
My gecko is on my arm almost to my shoulder Idk if she trust me or not?
This is so helpful! Thank you!
Just held my Leo for 1-2 minutes tonight!
Thank you so much for this video! I was a bit afraid of why my gecko wouldn't eat. I only got him 3 days ago :)
my gecko is very jumpy and i don’t think i’ve ben very calm with her, i’m scared and it’s been a couple months since i’ve had her
r o n i ! Hi, what I did with my leopard gecko, is make a noise, something like a ttttttttt so when they hear that noise, the associate with u. Just be calm, and keep making noise, bc they get scared if they hear a sudden noise.
hey can you put in the link for the tank-shelf? or whatever its called. please? thank you 😌
This helped me so much thank you!
Mine is just super curious and overenthusiastic when it comes to food. I do not have a front door tank but I plan to get one when she's bigger.
I'm still in the middle of taming her and I feel bad for handling her the first week because I had to bring her to the vet. Boy did she hate me that day and hated the vet even more so 😓 plus she was about to shed so she was even more pissed.
i got a leopard gecko about a week ago and i took one of the hides off when it was in it i think i just made it more nervous so im going to be leaving it alone for a while now
i just got mine yesterday and it is a baby, it just got there yesterday and i was lucky i went yesterday there, it was 70 bucks but he looks like his color is a little rare, i have no idea if it is but it might be
i have a house that does not have space much, i did own some house geckos but they have both died. i have now a leopard but only for a 10 gallon. my room does not have space for a 20 gallon, should my gecko be okay?
At 5 months old she is probably a she. But just keep your eyes on the area, if you notice pores or hemipene bulges, it’s a boy.
heres a question. If i have a hating pad. Can i just use an led uva uvb light that doesnt produce any heat??just light for the day cycle?
Yes!
@@JessicasAnimalFriends thanx.and did i make a mistake buying a 6x8 heating pad or should i have gotten a bigger one for a 20 long??i already stuck it to the bottom so i cant return it lol.i saw htey recommend 1/3r of the tank have a heating pad.
My baby leopard gecko ‘Boo’ is eating and drinking well but she won’t come near me. She’s about 4-5 weeks old and she tried to bite me when I put my hand in the tank. Is this normal? Thanks for reading
My snake Celia loves Mariah Carey songs, specially when I sing them to her ☺️😍🥰😂😂😂
xxSadie Michellexx I love this comment lmaooooo
Thats adorable-

I have above now but I put my hand around him
Thank you for a wonderful video your information has been grate I am getting a few Leonard gecko's, for my learning center and I'm in a min stop study faise. Are there videos on behaviors and body language
Hey so I have a leopard gecko but every time I put my hand in their he completely ignore my hand so can I have a small too anyone
Idk if mines broken idk how old he is he's still is a juvenile I bought him from a reptile show and he ate right away out of tongs is that bad or is that good
Good
If it eat right away it is good
What do you mean good is it broken
Ooh
@@codebreakeractivate6366 is what broken
My leopard gecko is on my yt btw my last video and he doesnt eat alot what should i do and btw i can just pick him up and i can sometimes pet him and get him on my hand but yea
i have banana eater now. At first it took 3 weeks for her to come to my hands and almost a month to start eat normally.
I feel terrible I got sand, I wanna change it but idk how to remove him without scaring him cause he doesn’t like to be touched
Same here, I had no idea it was bad and he's still getting used to things...
I got my leopard gecko yesterday, I started handling her today, it’s only been 3 hours and she already is used to me, although she doesn’t like me picking her up, she doesn’t mind me holding her.
If you watched the video you’d know it’s best to wait 2 weeks before handling your gecko
Is this useful while they are babies too??
I'm not entirely sure
Yes
Thank you so much for this! It’s my 4th day with my leo, Oliver, and he doesn’t trust me yet. He constantly snaps at me when I offer him food, is this normal?
If you’re moving your hand around too much he may think you’re food, if not, you must have a brave gecko since they usually run from anything they find dangerous
Should I put my hand in the tank even if my gecko is in his/her hide?
They will arch their backs getting use to your touch
Umm I have a crocodile gecko and he small I don’t know if these steps are gonna be the same and I just barely got him too
Im having a trouble with my leopard gecko and im a bit worried. Ive had mostly bearded dragons. He stays in my room with me. Im not sure on lighting i keep getting told different things. He really doesnt like to be bothered at all. Now my bearded dragons i took them everywhere i did alot of things with them. So this is a change of speed for me. I just dont wanna see him stressed and unhappy. I got him at repticon for 30 bucks. I knew by the price something was up with him. But i still wanted to give him a better home. Now im just worried im not a good mommy to him 😒
Um- I looked “down below” and I don’t see the link for the stand thing... I would REALLY love to get that stand.
you looked in the description?
I messed up.. I got my leopard gecko yesturday and have been trying to hold her because they told me she likes to be handled, and now she hates me/ is scared of me. I'm never going back up there again unless I really need to, for a while
Has anything changed?
SAND IS BAD FOR THEM?! I'm a terrible leo father ;-; what should I use instead?? ANYONE, PLEASE!!!
I took mu Gecko 3 days ago, o Adore her but her fast movements scare me a lot :) i cant touch her because im afraid She Will Jump and bite me :) so we just stare each other and i dont know Who Is more frightened :) Will this ever pass?
reading this comment section makes me realize that i actually have a very good and chill gecko (got it about a week ago)
Have you done anything special ?
I got my albino Leo today and i have a warm, moist and cool hide for her but she hasn’t yet used them she just lies behind them. She’s juvenile and was kept in a small tub in the store in darkness not sure if she just needs time to come round and investigate?
I’d be patient. It can take weeks for them to fully settle in
I had a gecko a few days ago and on the second day I was touching him but now on the 4th day he is now hiding when I put my hand in what can I do?
So i got a Leo a few years ago and then named it mike. Just found out it’s female and my neighbors have a male and called it Godzilla. Mike and Godzilla can have little mikezillas
I recently got an adult gecko from a friend who has been dealing with depression and she can’t give her gecko as much attention anymore. She hasn’t been able to muster up the strength to hold it in months. The gecko (Peanut) is way jumpy and I’m scared to hold him because he’s so jumpy, and he might jump out of my hands.. I haven’t finished the video so idk if you give any advice on this but I’m worried ;-;
Don’t worry too much about it. I would hold peanut with your hand still in the tank if you’re scared. If you decide to take them out of the tank while holding them, keep your fingers under their stomach and your thumb over their back. Maybe keep your other hand by them as well if you’re nervous
Everyone tells me he’s not gonna eat at first and not gonna eat during the day but he ate as soon as we fed him during the day
is it normal for them to stay in their hides most of the time when you first get them? i got mine end of february and he’s still very skittish and stays in his hide a lot. he’s also a juvenile
Could just be afraid. Make sure the enclosure is in a quiet area of the home with not a lot of traffic. Make sure there’s lots of hiding material like physical hides, plants, cork, etc to make the gecko feel secure
Jessica’s Animal Friends i have him in my room but i never have music or anything too loud for him and im planning on buying him more hides when i get paid next week too. btw i bought the pink “different is beautiful” sweatshirt and i’m so excited for it to come!!
my gecko is pretty shy and a bit stressed cause i got it recently but i feel like she will be a good lizard in no time
Yep just be patient!
Can my 2 leopard geckos be together I have a boy and girl they are both babies
Hi ok so I made a big mistake so i got a leo and it was my first reptile so I really wanted to hold it so I got it and held it on the first phew days and also it was feeding ok so I have held it 3 times and I have looked at her and stuff so what do I do now bc she tried to bite me when I put my hand in pls help what do I do!!!!
Patience is the best thing I can recommend. Give your gecko time to feel safe before introducing yourself
This is an old video and I didn’t know how at the time 😂 I definitely plan to refilm it
Did you make those enclosures? I have seven now and I have PVC enclosures but I’ve had problems with them lately. I’d love to make something like that. Was wondering how you made them.
I have a tutorial on my channel, I call them gecko bookshelves!
Im a bit confused on the placement of the probe for the thermostat, after gettin the correct temp, do you cover the probe with ur shelf liner?
I place it directly on top of the heater under the shelf liner
@@JessicasAnimalFriends ok ty
I've had a leopard for about a week now but I've made the mistake in trying to mess with him and I was beginning to think he just hates me but this video helped me so much. Since I've already had him for a week but I didnt leave him alone do you think I should wait a few weeks still?
I have never observed any reaction from sound from my leopard geckos, I don’t think they can hear very well
i worry too much about my leo shes like my child every little thing im like hm is that normal HAHA
This was posted on my birthday!
Also, I haven't seen my little leo drink any water in the three days, I've had him. I know it takes a while and I haven't seen him at night, but I don't remember seeing a water dish in his enclosure when I bought him from Petsmart. Are there any tips for getting my leo to drink?
Ooh geckos 🦎
I got my gecko from a friend he's 8 and he wanted me to hold him once after that he was good it's been 1 week sooo I needa wait longer. ALSO CAN ANYONE HLEP ME? Q:HOW OFTEN DO THEY POOP?
