In today's vlog I'll give you a taste of what's happening on the farm.. we will show you the fertilizer truck and give you some thoughts on fertilizing pasture land. Also I'll show you a cool tool upgrade for those old dewalt cordless tools..come along as I test out the new lithium ion battery adapter kit for dewalt 18v cordless tools
Saw this awhile back on Amazon. Think I'll pick it up for my dad this Christmas. He has an old Dewalt drill that he still uses for everything and hates new stuff so this should be perfect. Nice to see it in action and the difference in performance.

I just bought this product based on your recommendation. I was in the same exact situation as you. I had the good drill driver and only one battery. But I also have a Dewalt recip saw that takes the same battery so when my only good battery goes bad I will then have to buy TWO tools. I just bought one of the 20v drill drivers with 2 Lithium ion batteries and a charger so this kit will now give me 4 Lit. batteries and 2 chargers. I should be set. I had seen the adapter kit but yours is the first actual review I have seen on how it works. Thanks for the video! Oh, and the price has gone up since you bought yours! :(
Ive got this pack and loved it! In less than 3 months both batteries dead! Only reason I got this pack was for the adapter for my old faithful 18v and to power my new toy...the 20v blower(which i love) till the batteries died making it useless. I thank dewalt for making good to replace the default batteries. It was more then I expected. But if they would make a package with the adapter and fast charger with even one 3anph or better. This would be awesome for not only me, but everyone that's interested over the years.

There comes a time when you just have to bite the bullet my brother. I just finished. I spent the last year of my life upgrading every last one of my DeWey tools to the current top of the line.
My reasoning: Things were starting to break, and it was slowing me down. It is always better to replace your tools just before they die, because they never die at a convenient time. Think about it, you are working o something when it happens, 100% of the time.
My reasoning for going to of the line on everything: It is my intention for this to have been the last time I buy tools. I am 53, I retired 3 years ago, I am about to move down to the coast...and I want to be comfortable for my last 30 years on the planet. So what I have today, I am hopefully going to have for a very long time. I figured that if I bough the very best of today, it will take longer before they become so outdates that I can't buy decent batteries for them anymore.
My point: it is best to get ahead of it, and to do it all at once. In a couple of years, I won't be feeling how much money I spent on tools in 2022. But if I drug it out over 5 years...I'd remember that pain for many years to come.

Great video! Much like many of the comments here, I also have DeWalt 18 volt tools that utilized XRP nickel cadmium obsolete battery. Thanks for the information on the conversion 20 volt DeWalt set that includes the charger, adapter and two batteries. Always wanted to convert to Lithium batteries for greater capacity as well as other features such as longer shelf life between charges and no memory effect on initial charge. You made my day and I plan on purchasing this conversion pack ASAP.

Don't know how I missed this when you posted it originally but I am so glad I have seen it now! I have the 18v drill and impact driver and the batteries don't last anytime but the tools don't have that much use on them so I was really hating having to think about replacing them! I had no idea something like this existed! Thanks Josh.
The little ears that keep you from putting A 6 amp battery on; well, I just cut them off and it fits like the smaller ones and works perfect.
I was just given a boatload of DeWalt tools I am definitely going to switch to that lithium ion battery

We were using lithium ion tools and shop at school back 15 years ago.
Last week I bought the Dewalt 5 pack drill, impact hammer, skill saw, recep saw, and a power light with the 20v lithium came with a nice tool bag so far so good
Great tools you'll never regret them...
Just for conversation, I would caution anyone about assuming because the light is solid red the battery charged the battery is at full capacity. I just charged 3 of my 18v XRP, all were left on the charger beyond the solid light. Then I used my voltmeter to check all batteries. (1) 11.55, ( 2) 11.25, ( 3) 3.35. So, the moral of the story is a solid red light on the charger doesn’t mean the battery is at full power.

FYI: the new "20V" batteries are actually 18V. most of them discharge around around 18V, some of the lower end "20v" dewalt batteries, like the ones in this video, actually discharge at around 16-17V.
in Europe and Australia it is illegal to misrepresent the output of electrical devices, so these exact same new style batteries are sold as "18V". and yes, you can charge them on the old chargers with the adapter because, again, they are 18V. they are not 20V.

I use this adapter and battery for my 18 volts since day one then it came out on the market. More then a year now. Happy happy happy. Works fine. Save money to buy new 20 volts tools. I recommended.
But a whole new set of drills with new ion batts are the same price as the adaptor kit ?
I got the dewalt 18 v and use the 18 v milwaukee battery adapter def wakes up this dewalt tools ,mines new hardlly used but adapter saved me from buying a new setup a friend passed and his wife gave me 4 milwaukee batterys and charger

Most people know already especially in Europe that the dewalt 20v max batteries are the same 18v battery voltage as the 18v batteries as when you take an 18v battery and take it off the charger when it is fully charged, the battery reads 20v so dewalt renamed the newer lithium battery packs to 20v max as it is the maximum voltage the battery charges to.
Both styles of batteries push in and slide on are the same voltage but the new lithium batteries are renamed, but only for the USA market.
The exact same slide on style lithium batteries and slide on battery style tools in Europe are still labelled as 18v.
Other tool manufacturers have also relabelled their 18v batteries and tools as 20v maximum.
It’s a marketing gimmick for people that don’t realise there is no difference in voltage compared to the old nicad and nimh batteries and for people to buy new 20v tools instead of keeping the reliable 18v tools that still work beautifully and just need an adapter to convert the 18v slide on battery housing to fit the 18v post style tools.
We used the adapters for out impacts and saws at work and they ended up burning out in a few months

Which is odd because the cells inside the batteries have a max charge voltage of 4.2v and have 5 cells for 21v... You would think they would market that
His batteries were the old NiCad style which don’t hold a charge half as long as a lithium they die faster so in turn drop voltage waaayyy faster giving you weak tools soon after a full charge but they do make 18v lithium XRP batteries that look just like the old style connector but where the +/- terminals are they’re shaped like an (L) opposed to the old NiCad that are shaped like a lower case (l) I guess lol. So if the tool/charger isn’t XRP it won’t snap in even tho it looks like it will. so the “20v” may be a gimmick but just going from NiCad to lithium is a massive difference.
Yes sir. They all use 5 18650 3.6 volt batteries. 24v platform is the only one that uses 6.
Thanks for the video. I have the same drill and an 18V impact driver and they both still work good. However, I did just purchase the new XRP impact driver and drill set from HD and well, the new drills along with the new batteries is awesome. I'll still keep my old drill though.
I bought a new Dewalt 20 volt drill driver about a year-and-a-half ago and I can't say enough good about it. It's been a phenomenal tool with gobs of power and those 20 volt batteries last a long time once they're fully charged. The problem with putting that adapter in the old charger is the old charger is for 18 volt batteries and I don't believe it would be a good idea. It looks like that kit came with a 20 volt charger and that's what you need to use to make sure your batteries fully charged.

I watched this video and thought about my 18 volt Bosch tools. I have looked many times over the last few years for replacements for the discontinued old batteries. After market batteries were not the same, did not hold the same charge. Today I looked on line and there it was, a new Bosch battery, at a higher storage capacity for my Bosch tools. To top it off, they were on sale for 45% off, I bought 2! I never would have looked today if I hadn't seen your video. Thanks for the good timing!

Those 18v tools are built like tanks so I dont think that thing will ever break unless you push it to an extreme limit and burn out the motor ,lol. I'm gonna get this kit eventually, my 18v batteries are still good.
Charge the 20v on a charger for the 20v which you should probably already have. If you dont, you kinda might wanna look in the costs or catching a sale with an updated version of the tool. I already had a bunch of 20v and bought a dual port charger for the 18v with a new battery as i only had the one tool i got cheap, needed another battery and the original was on its way out. That was also before this adapter came out. I dont see it worth to spend the money on more batteries for this as its the only tool to use these. Tool is fine and works great so these seems worth the money. Already priced out a new one just incase.

I do use the large batteries. I was surprised to see some electronics in the adapter it since both the newer li-ion and the older ni-cads were both 18V. I figured it just had some wires from one connector to the other. It clearly was just too much current for too long with the saw. I may try to add a fuse or something when I put it back together. Still not sure what happened to the battery, it just died. It must have created a short when it went and popped something. There are some internal replacement circuit boards for the dewalt batteries for just a few bucks in Aliexpress. I thought I'd pick up a couple of those too. The adapters are a great idea. I just had to stop using one with my saw.
@@robert574 These adapters have a constant draw on the batteries, never leave a battery in the adapter, or you will kill them.

One problem though, the lithium one is brand new and the ni cad one is years old, so not a fair comparison. Btw, you can swap out the cells in the ni cad battery for new ones for a lot less money and you can still use your original charger. You could redo at least seven of your old batteries for the price of that lithium one

Bought a very cheap knockoff adapter for the 18v, and modified it to fit my very low mileage 14.4v DeWalt drill. A little creative hacking, and it works and looks very nice. Not to worry about 20v in an 14.4v. 14.4v packs put out 16-17v when fully charged, 20v packs dip to 16-18v within the first 30 seconds of use. It IS peppy though in that first 30 seconds! After that, I can't tell the difference except that it lasts 2x or 3x longer. (2Ah 20v Max)

I have the adapter to convert all my 18 V dewalt tools to the new 20 V lithium. I also have a lot of craftsmen C3 tools that I got an adapter for and I'm using the dewalt 20 V lithium batteries on the Craftsman as well. Huge difference on power.. Very worth the investment. I've also purchased a lot of 18 V dewalt tools from people who are upgrading and got them really inexpensive. I probably have 20 dewalt 20 V lithium ion batteries of various amp hours that I use for all my power tools whether it's dewalt or Craftsman.. They also make adapters for other tools you can use the 20 V lithium dewalt batteries for makita and Milwaukee and ryobi
Gotta get me a set of these! I have a perfectly good 17 year old DeWalt 18V hammer drill and sawzall who’s 18V batteries died years ago and I just could not bring myself to throw out good tools!
this adapter kit is better than original equipment. The only downfall ive found is there is I ghost draw when you leave it combined in a tool. Remove your battery when not in use to avoid a dead battery when you pick up your tool.

I am glad they make adapter my old 18 volt is still nice but batteries dead and wont recharge , i already burnt drill up, but nice for my circular saw . Brushes smoked on old hammerdrill. Replaced it with 20v
Great information on the adapter. I've been thinking of making an adapter for my older tools, but now I will just get one from Dewalt.
🔴 Bro just go ahead and upgrade to the new 20v li-ion drills and impacts. I understand these work just fine but you'll save time and money in the long run with new tools. You'll struggle less and thus get more done without getting your body as worn out. Trust me. I used to think like you but these new tools are cheap with all the savings this time of year. $99 BRUSHLESS KITS! Make sure you get brushless! That 18v to 20v kit you just bought could've gotten you a new BRUSHLESS KIT! Sell these old tools or hold them as backups but with new tools you'll quickly get attached to them and forget about the old ones.

I've had a hard time finding 18 volt batteries for my tools, the Lithium one's that came with the set are no longer made and you have to buy an off brand battery or the adapter and i've read that you can't leave the tool hooked up to the adapter because it will drain the battery ,so you have to disconnect them when you're not using them,and some of the premium batteries like the 6 ah batteries won't work with the adapter at all , Its sad ,I like the tools i have and they work fine ,and I'd hate to have to throw them away just because they don't make the batteries anymore.

Somethings to consider. With the lithium adapter you can now buy a 4amp or 6amp battery. So your sawzall or circle saw will last a lot longer. Another cool thing is lithium batteries you can use them until they are dead. Older batteries you should start to charge them when they are 50 or 60% depleted. The newer chargers are a bit smarter too so the life of the battery will last longer.
I think you got it backwards the old NiCad batteries suffer badly from battery memory you have to kill them before charging for longer life. You never want to kill Lithium batteries and usually the protection circuits will not let you. In fact the cell have a safety on top of the battery that shuts it off permanatly if goes completely dead. And for a reason if you try charging a completely totally dead lithium batty it might burst into flames!

Good news about portable tools
It's already been pointed out that the whole 20v thing is just a marketing lie, but that's only one reason I don't use DeWalt anymore. I even put a ton of consideration into buying one of these adapters some months back, with the same thought process as you, but the tools just don't have the power or solid feel they once did, even with good batteries. I gave away my DeWalt 18v set to a buddy and bought new M18's. I figure if you're going to upgrade at some point anyway, go with the tools that show better numbers at only slightly more $. Milwaukee might not be what they used to be, but the Fuel series is built solidly and packs power. The new M18 3/8" drive impact vs my old 18v DeWalt 1/2" drive impact is no comparison (both with new batteries). The DeWalt couldn't even handle a rusty bolt, and the M18 3/8 will pull off lug nuts. Move up to the 1/2" and you'll break wheel studs if you want. The DeWalt flex volt though... Those 60v grinders and reciprocating saws have some balls, but that's too much cash to dish out for a farm/ranch user.

How easy is it to switch back and forth? If you used 4 batteries on a big brush clearing project, but are down to 2, with 2 lithium ion batteries from a newer drill, you can take all the batteries in and out easily, but the adapter seems meant to go in and stay in, so the 2 older 18 volt batteries can't be installed easily, back and forth.

I would love to see a video comparison of maybe different brands of tools or why you choose the Dewalt brand. It'll be a few years before my family will get a place to settle down and start a homestead so I'm basically doing research on what I'm going to need from the smallest drill to larger things like a tractor :-)
Or even a collaboration with a buddy who maybe has different tools?

I’ve been using DeWalt since the 90’s and have to say I live by them. When I was doing electrical work 12-15 hours a day 6 days a week I put those tools to the test. I even dropped my drill from the top of a 300’ ft tower lol of course it was grass not concrete but still lol and I’m still using it 20 years later. I have the new stuff 20v now and my son has the 18 v that I gave him. So far I’m liking the new tools. Good luck on your homestead when you get it and remember to thank the good Lord you weren’t born in a third world country
The battery pack adapter 20v I purchased said not to use it with certain Dewalt drills. I didn’t see that on the package until I purchased the new lithion 20v battery with adapter. It worked on 5e drill however I had an issue trying to remove the battery from the drill. The push buttons on the side that you squeeze to release it would not press in. After about 40 minutes of prying we were able to get it out. Very disappointed with this issue that’s when I looked at the package and it said not to use with Dewalt 970 drill or something like that which was the drill model. My drills are still in great shape and I hate to toss out a good tool.
There are some awesome battery kits to recondition you old 18 volt battery.
Throwing them around like you do NO wonder they're crap.
Take care of your equipment no mater the condition its in.

Come on buddy these batteries and drills have all been dropped more than 1000 times...that's what they are made for buddy...like I said I've had the drill and saws since the 1990's...they are made tough...they have been rained on tossed, dropped and still keep on clugging right along....oh and they're not crap...I work with my tools..not set them on a pedestal like some grumpy old man....this is a farm not an art gallery!
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer TBH, I had the same thought when I saw you throw the old battery, but in reality that's because I have the skills to re-pack the batteries with lithium cells (which is more complex than you'd think because lithium calls require active management)... and I would keep the old batteries for doing that, BUT.... if those adapter kits are readily available it looks like a better deal than trying to fabricate your own batteries (and you can use the new batteries with newer tools later)... so probably throwing the old batteries is the right thing to do... throw them into recycling tho, because they will be old Nickel Cadmium cells which are quite environmentally unfriendly.

I was using one of these adapters with my Dewalt handheld skill saw pruning some branches when a LOT of smoke came rolling out of the adapter. It quit working and both the adapter and the battery quit working. Yep the battery too. Inside the adapter was a TO-220 mosfet on a heat sink. It was burnt and broken. I ordered a replacement and I'm not sure what's wrong with the battery. I do have another 20V adapter and still use it with a li-ion battery on my old 18V tools on occasion. Nothing high current though.
I think it's a shame that so many toss old tools that are still totally functional yet have bad batteries. I wish more manufacturers supported older tools. Ryobi, while maybe not the pro stuff many want - seems to keep their battery form factor for a lot longer than other brands.

I have Mac tools (Dewalt makes some or all of their electric tools) 3/8's impact that I'm going to try this out on those.. I'm tired of buying junk batteries on a basic yearly basis. Very neat!

around Christmas time home depot has the drill with 2 batteries and a charger or the impact driver 1 battery and a charger for 99.99. both come with a cloth bag. cant beat the deal I think last time I looked 1 battery is around 80.00. I generally buy one every year. can never have to many batteries.
True...I'll keep an eye out...but never at Home Depot..They denied me a veterans discount multiple times, keep changing the ID requirement like it makes me less a vet..so disapointing
You don't need the adaptor, still could get the NiCd and it's pretty good. 20V Li-ion is 18V, same as the NiCd. Power is the same as well, that is voltage and current same. What DeWalt could have done is put a set of batteries in the adaptor so when you slide the Li-ion in, you have additional run time. Yes you could run NiCd and Li-ion in parallel.
Come to think of it, $100 for this adaptor package is a no brainer. I'm going to make an adaptor for my DeWalt tools to accept Milwaukee 9.0 amp hour Li-ion batteries.
The cheaper Chinese knock offs with the USB chargers cost at least $10 less and will discharge your Li battery if not unplugged from the adapter and will burn out with a pop and a smell of burned electronics. I've had two cheaper ones fail out of the four I bought. No more Cheap ones for me.
I didn't get the lithium I got "two" of of XR for 39.99 and they seem to be working great !

Yeah, those have to be aftermarket. Two DeWalt 18V XRP batteries were around $180 a year ago.

18v is 1.5 ah 20v is 2 ah not fair test I can use my 20/60v 6/2ha for the test just keeps the highest voltage longer.
The 18v nicad and nimh batteries when fully charged from the charger all read 20v and that is how it was designed to be.
The only difference between the old post style batteries and the new lithium slide on batteries is they were renamed as 20v maximum
Get a multimeter set to dc voltage and fully charge a dewalt post style battery with a dewalt post style battery charger and test the voltage and you also will stop believing in the 20v myth.
This applies on the 12v systems, 14v systems as well as the 18v systems and any other battery voltage as they were all under stating the voltage that a freshly charged battery is designed to reach under the manufacturers specifications.
Even lithium ion batteries rated at 3.7v are designed to charge to a maximum 4.2v by design specifications.
The voltage always drops to a nominal voltage after charging that is around the voltage stated on the battery.
The whole 20v maximum is a marketing ploy to make you believe you have something more than you already had with the 18v systems and is just for the USA consumer market as in Europe the same batteries and tools are still labelled as 18v.
If you believe the actual voltage is different between the 20v systems and the 18v systems, congratulations, you successfully believing the marketing hype.

You should check out the xr5 amp battery. It will do you a lot of good
When Dewalt first brought out the lithium they were compatible with the old 18 volt nicad then they went like everyone else so you had to buy a whole new tool kit
But dewalt says you cant use the premium 20 volt batteries with the adapter. Are they right?

not being mean just my opinion but that is not that good of a comparison being that the 20 volt battery is new out of package and the 18 volt has had years of use and multiple charges on it.
that is the whole point. 2 new 18 volt xrp batteries costs the same as the adapter charger and battery, plus it gets you ready for the future
Yep I agree..the 18v was older with multiple charges on it...and just like probsty13 said ...it's about getting an upgrade..will it be better than what you currently have..the answer is YES for sure
Plus if you buy a “new” pack of the old style batteries how do you know when they were made? They might have been sitting in a warehouse for years.

Just so you know Dewalt tools do have a life time warranty. You might have to ship it but they will fix it.
U could in theory replace the cells in ur old nicad style battery soldering iron would be prob all u need
It's too bad that you had a poor experience with home depot. When I went just a week or two ago to buy a power drill myself, I was in uniform (active duty army) and I had multiple employees shake my hand and thank me for my service. When I went to check out I was even reminded that I could use a veterans discount! It almost seemed a little over the top! But I live in a military town so I guess stores around here are just accustomed to helping out soldiers.
Makes a difference in a military town for sure...I had no problem when I lived in Utah and was active duty...around here I might as well been a piece of garbage....I even asked the manager "Are you sure this is what you wanna do?" One day I'll go in with a body camera and show the world..they deserve to know
Where I live is not a military town and Home Depot always gives my son and I a discount and we are never in uniform since we are not active. I don’t know why but it seems that each manager chooses to follow company policy or not.

Cut the cells out of the dead nicd batteries, save the thermal reset device wire a cheap lithium tool battery to the prongs with the reset device in series. Screw and glue the case to the dewalt pack back, and put the top on the battery. Bingo you now have a battery that runs the dewalt, and the other tool haart etc they went to 😁🤓😎
Has anyone used this adapter over a period of time? I have 2 adapters, chargers, and 4 batteries for my older 18v tool kit. They all started out fine. Not an upgrade over the older 18v but it worked again. Over time ALL of the 20v batteries stop holding a charge. I know about seating the batteries correctly (and have 2 different chargers) and they DID work in the beginning. But seeing all 4 become as useless as the ones I replaced in a matter of a few months is frustrating. Is it a matter of using a smart battery on a dumb tool? I made it a point to take excellent care of the 2nd set I bought because I thought maybe I had inadvertently abused the 20v. I don't want to replace the 18v tool set but I sure as hell won't be buying a single new Dewalt battery after this debacle.
I'll tell ya brotha....I've had the adaptor for several years now and I'm of the opinion that the 18v battery is a better battery
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer Unfortunately I came to the same conclusion after I spent hundreds of dollars on new, fancy batteries. I think at this point I'm better off buying aftermarket 18v lead batteries instead.
I purchased the DeWalt adapter and battery kit that you show for $99 on Amazon after waiting on it to go on sale (orig. $149). I have been buying up 18V DeWalt tools for almost nothing now. Just yesterday I picked up a 6 tool kit with case for $75.
The adapter doesn't work on all 18V Dewalt tools. It doesn't work on the worksite radio or on the wet/dry vacuum because the adapter doesn't fit.
For reasons known only to Dewalt they added a notch on each side of the adapter so it wouldn’t fit. Nothing a Dremel won’t take care of. I’m getting ready to try the Weatly adapter
I have a company that will rebuild those for about 30 bux each had a bunch done better than new...
There's a way to revive the old batteries so that the charger will charge them again

Dad always said, take care of your tools and they'll last. I have a big six-piece Dewalt kit I ordered about 18 years ago and love every one of them.

Know your not a big fan, but Home Depot currently has the conversion kit for Dewalt, adapter, charger, and two batteries, for $119. Could be time to grab a couple!By the way, the silent clip was funny, sorry to hear that they still "black flagged" you. Need to get them to identify their issues and make peace!
