    Cool video. We've been there one year in January, and it was a total blizzard. We even couldn't find the top, we had to wait for it to clear out a bit just to be able to see a part of the wall so we could go back down. I am glad to now see it all on your video.

      Oh wow - January, sounds like the weather was horrific! I think you made the right decision to abandon the hike with those conditions against you!! You did well to get as far as you did.

      Thank you very much Kevin! Much appreciated. Glad you enjoyed it!! My legs certainly knew I'd done it the next morning but it was worth it - really enjoyed the walk and the views going up were wonderful. Thanks for watching!

    Wow, what a great walk. It had it all from waterfalls, walking through forested areas, and what a cool view from the top with the cloud/rain in the way like that, yet better views either side! The Bothy looked so unwelcoming. I know they're meant to be a form of shelter not comfort, but a tent has always appealed a bit more to me! Your mentions of the Grahams, munro, merricks, corbetts etc. are a good point. I shared my Scotland hiking videos on a website/forum called Walk Highlands and it clearly states what type of hill/mountain the hike is. Not sure if you use Walk Highlands, but I'd highly recommend creating an account and sharing your videos on there as the forum is very active and so long as you don't tick the checkbox to make your walk private, it will be added to the website part as a 'walk report'.

      Thanks, glad you enjoyed it - was an excellent walk and I thought for a minute I had a clear afternoon until that storm came rolling through. One of these days I'm going to hike a Scottish mountain with perfect visibility! Thanks for the tip regarding the Walk Highlands site, yes I use it all the time (when travelling in Scotland) and was actually planning to create an account and post a video as a trial - see what happens. Good to know you've found it active and worth the time - it does sound like a great idea.

    I think the mountain is generally referred to as " The Merrick" . Dad's cousin grew up on a farm on the lower ground nearby called Polgowan , which had seven shepherds living on it. It was compulsory purchased by the Forestry Commission after the war and they had to leave.

    • @MattWhitingsEurope
      @MattWhitingsEurope  Рік тому

      That's interesting, I didn't realise it was purchased under those circumstances. Must have been a very simple life to be living like that. I made another video where I visited Alexander Murray's birthplace in the Galloway Hills - it was incredible to look around and think about the views being almost identical to what would have been there several hundred years ago. Here's the video if you're interested --> ua-cam.com/video/SeXKRad_h80/v-deo.html

      @@MattWhitingsEurope Yes I watched that one and loved it. I'm from central Ayrshire and we sometimes ( in good weather ) use the road through Wanlockhead , to access the M74/M6 as it's the shortest route by mileage. However I ran a milk business which supplied a dairy based in Leadhills - we used to leave the milk in a shed of a farm on the A76 at Sanquhar for them to come down and collect to make the doorstep deliveries in the two high villages. Sometimes it was difficult for them to get down to pick up each day's supply in the winter. Funny coincidence - Dad's cousin was called Jim Murray - no relation to Alexander Murray as our Murray's ( Dad's Mother ) were at Ochiltree , Ayrshire for 400 years.

      That's excellent, you've clearly got a lot of roots up there in Scotland. I'm old enough to remember a time before supermarkets when people got their milk form the ever reliable milkman each morning, crazy how times have changed.

    I have been up the merrick and surrounding hills many times when I was younger as I lived in the area. Now living in Australia but I will be back sometime to climb them again. So many memories from watching this video. Thank you.

    The highest peak between Cross Fell and Ben Lomond.I was going to go up it earlier in the week but it would have been too time consuming and I settled for a walk from Glentrool Village to Loch Trool and some overnight stargazing.

    Love the sights and sounds. Your hiking boots look a lot like trainers! Why you walking on the edge like a daredevil?! You make it down without the rain?

    • @MattWhitingsEurope
      @MattWhitingsEurope  2 роки тому

      Haha yeah they're more like hiking trainers but they do come under the 'hiking shoes' section on the North face web site - served me very well over the years but do need to get some more, the grips are getting low! It rained briefly as I started to head down and then turned into a beautiful evening for the long walk home!

    Absolutely stunning! You need waterproof hiking boots. That's all I wear, a little warm in rhe summer but best to keep your feet dry.

    You have no idea of the route or where you are at times, combined with running short on daylight, no wonder Galloway MRT are kept busy.

    • @MattWhitingsEurope
      @MattWhitingsEurope  2 роки тому +2

      Don’t worry Gary, it was all under control. I always carry a map and compass as back up but don’t use them on straight forward hikes like this one. The markers and trail here were very well defined for the most part and it was easy to spot when I’d lost the pathway. All good 👍
