This is the first time, I have heard anybody call Chennai a “Ancient” city. Can anyone elucidate why?
That's because there are pockets of Chennai which are really old. Mylapore is one such area, where the Celebrated Tamizh Poet Thiruvalluvar himself had lived. Chola Kings have built temples such as Gangadeeshwarar Kovil in Purusaiwakkam and Marundeeshwarar in Thiruvanmayur. These were villages back then, which was slowly absorbed into Madras as a city by the British and now evolved into a metropolis as Chennai.
Chennai is the 2nd oldest corporation in the world after London. It is so ancient even otherwise in the name of Madrasapattanam or Chennikesavapattanam and its history dates to much earlier

@@xxcronomaxx7986 Many cities like Mumbai-Bombay, Kolkata-Calcutta, Bengaluru-Banglore, just to name a few have been changed to accommodate a more Indianized name. However the peculiarity about Chennai-Madras is that there were small villages called Chennaipattinam and Madarasapattinam many hundred years ago. Personally I don't find any reason to have changed the name. Maybe one possible reason was to erase the colonial past and to take the city forward as a new century was born. It could also be politics. But according to me, the name both Madarasapattinam and Chennaipattinam were in the vicinity of Fort St. George and it is yet again having a colonial connection , I'd have preferred the name "Thirumayilai" (previously called as Vedapuri) as the name for Chennai because we had one of the Greatest Poet of all times, Thiruvalluvar as one of its residents, some 2000 Years back. Mylapore is the oldest and most culturally rich settlement within the present day Chennai and there is nothing more Tamizh than naming the city after Thiruvalluvar or the place in which he lived. Just my personal thoughts.
