Smoke Ring - Frozen by Flash

  • What all is happening inside a vortex smoke ring? Fascinating!
Next to the slow motion videos, we wanted to freeze the vortex ring by flash, to get sharp and detailed pictures of its structure. Therefore we needed an extremely short flash duration.
Turns out; that is pretty easy to get: an ordinary speed-light flash has extremely short flash durations at its lowest power settings. At 1/64th power setting, flash duration is about 1/30.000th of a second.

I'm going to do some experiments myself soon. This channel is inspiring. I wish they were available to answer my questions....

Hi Bubblezov Love, thanks for your comment. Thing is; they are ao many comments on my videos, many super nice, but it is too much information, way more than I can reply to. Have fun with your experiments!

Hi Gianni. These vortex rings are like snow flakes, beautiful, and each one is unique in detail. I hope to one day make a super slow-motion high-definition close-up video of them!

+Giesbert Nijhuis I hope to see that soon!
But I know also that the Hi Frame rate camera Hi Definition is not so cheap.
      Ciao !

    Very nice work!
What about two vortex rings? It would also be interesting to see how two vortex rings interact.

Could you do that, but with half vortices? That is, make half a vortex close to a glass to be able to photograph the interior well.
I've been following you for years on UA-cam, I love your projects

Giesbert Nijhuis have you ever managed to create a stationary air vortex? Or to steer one in any way? Those are the first things that I wondered about. I figure it should be possible to steer one at the point of creation and have it fly a curve.....

What would happen if we would do it with light? Suppose space is filled with aether-like medium and light is the fastest possible propagation through that medium. If we were to use it to crate a vortex between 2 points of space would it be possible to establish an aether-free tunnel in which travel could occur with speeds faster than the one of light within aether? If fact such travel could perhaps occur instantly if the tunnel would be completely depleted from any aether-like medium, which otherwise interact with whatever travel through such tunnel... perhaps this is not possible but its worth trying to think of such possibilities... Let us know what you think because applying hydrodynamics to space could produce more applicable solutions than what we are using currently.... By the way - GREAT WORK so far Giesbert. Really good as it also helps to visualize the laws of physics...

Yes i find vortex very fascinating. But in terms of flight i find that
a vortex spiraling down a pipe can cause lift or suck gas in to the pipe through
a small hole. Maybe even become a lifting wing if top half of the pipe is cut away and
the vortex could be maintained down the half pipe.
I am just wondering at what speed air that the centrifugal force of air
    will counter the lift?
