Hi, and thank you for this great tutorial. I probably just missed it when you were describing the needles, but what size circular needle did you say you are using here? Thanks so much!!
Before I followed this tutorial, I was completely new to knitting. I was almost completely discouraged by some commenters that suggested this wasn't a suitable project for a beginner - however after a month (and some slightly thicker and cheaper yarn than was recommended in the video, with slightly thicker needles to match) I have just finished my blanket and it's amazing! It definitely kept me busy during a month of lockdown. Very glad that I wasn't put off initially, and now I can't wait to try my hand at other projects and to learn more about knitting! Edit: The dimensions of my blanket are likely slightly smaller than in the video. My finished blanket is approximately 60"x50", give or take. But it still covers my single bed :)
I know this is a long shot, but I stumbled across your comment. Do you mind sharing what you used and how you did it? I'm new to this and I have my heart set on making a blanket lol.
You are the first knitter on UA-cam I’ve seen using the continental method! My family is Eastern European so I am used to left-handed knitting and I had to teach myself how to convert right-handed methods to my left because I could not find anyone that used their left. I honestly find using your left hand to feed the yarn so much easier than your right and better for beginners.
I'm right handed and American style is too slow and stiff for me and changed to continental and I love it 🥰 maybe because I also do crochet by holding the string on my left hand
I watched this video a few years ago when I was considering making a blanket. Here I am again because this video has information that is great for other knitting projects as well. Great job and thank you.
I've crocheted for years & this is my first time to try knitting. Great tutorial! I'm knitting! I agree that more up close shots of you actually working the project would have been very helpful, but regardless, you are a great teacher! Thank you!
Angie Ramirez I think it may be because we did not really see her hands when she changed colors and other times. It is free, but if she's teaching then it would be nice to see what she's doing. I saw it pretty okay but in the comments a lot of people didn't.
Angie Ramirez oh no I wasn't saying you were! I didn't see that you meant her voice I thought you were talking about why they didn't like her teaching. Sorry 😂!
You've actually done ~100,000 knit stitches after you've completed the blanket (210 cast on stitches X 62 garter rows (124 knitted rows) X 4 colors = 104,160). I'm very much a nerd and when I heard you say "you've probably done a million knit stitches", I had to know approximately how many were actually in the pattern :) It's not a million, but it's still A LOT.
I’ve been crocheting for 16 years, & have been wanting to learn how to knit for the longest time. This video has really inspired me, and your stitch work is beautiful! Thank you for this helpful video, & keep up the amazing work!
Depends on what type of yarn you use and the quality. I just went to hobby lobby and got all the supplies (4 balls of yarn, knitting needles, and a needle to connect my squares) for around $40 probably
Thank you so much for breaking this down so clearly! Because of you I am no longer frustrated at trying to learn to knit and am relaxing, enjoying myself. I have definitely found a new hobby to destress.
Thank you for going out of your way to offer a knitting video, such as this one. This blanket is my first project (ever), and it’s been thing but a success. If I want a close-up, or a focused explanation on “cast-on”, I watched both this video and one from FiberArtsExpressions.
Great video appreciate the time you took to make it along with the advice of slipping the first stitch, no other video I've watched included that tidbit, and as a person who is learning to knit , it's valuable information
I haven't yet got to the color change. I'm just starting on my 2nd row but you've made it easy so far!! Another video i watched i couldn't get but you made it super easy. Thank you!!
I had a terrible time learning also until I found the continental method that she is using where you hold the working yarn in the left hand, I think it is easier for crochet users to learn.
Just my 2 cents, but a blanket is a massive project for a beginner. I like to start beginners with dish cloths. It's a small project that gives you a finished, usable item and a sense of accomplishment and confidence in your ability to take on another.
I think this video is really nice. It is long, but it is very complete. As some people mentioned, I think I would have liked a close up for changing colors, but I think I'll be fine. Everything is explained clearly and really detailed. Thank you for taking the time to make this video!
I usually have a really hard time with following along when I've previously watched some crochet videos. However, recently I've wanted to start back in on knitting (I've previously worked on knitting, but not a lot). This video was really helpful and very clear. The only part I would've wanted to see was the switching of colors and maybe a little more on the working of multiple rows.
Thank you so very much for all you have taught me in this video. I love how very good you are with the information on how to start the project and finish you are awesome. Thank you so very much Catherine
Found your tutorial last night and got yarn an needles today. Ive always wanted to learn and on my eighth row now and its looking great. I do wish the camera angles were better during critical points and to see you stitch it 5-10 times so I could get it better but after pausing and re watching I got it. I enjoyed this and it did help me a lot.
Very simply simple for me to follow 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾 I am definitely gonna make this as my first knitting blanket 😊 thanks for this easy beginning friendly tutorial 😊
Thanks so very much, yYour instructions were clear and concise. I had been confused with using circular needles and your tutorial has made me feel more confident as a beginner knitter. I'm loving Knit picks wool and their excellent customer service.
I'm a beginner knitter. I love how slow you go with the instructions. I'm a bit disappointed that there wasn't a close up when switching to a new color. Unless I missed it somewhere. Which is a possibility.
I came here to say the same! I just started knitting a few weeks ago and that part is still a mystery to me! Well, I've got a few thousand stitches until a color change, so... I've got time!
im making a blanket and following what you are saying just with less stitches on my straight needles as i havent got any circular needles but im sure it will look fine just the same just abit smaller
Wow! This has been such a fantastic video to watch, sad as it is I'm a 42 year old single dad. My niece has had a lovely baby girl and I want to knit her a blanket, however I still think even this being for the beginner I'm still struggling.
A third method-which is the one I use-of measuring the yarn tail is pulling enough yarn to measure from the bottom of the fingernail to the fingertip per stitch needed. Or you can use this method and count out half the stitches needed, then double the yarn.
Hello knitpick I recently purchased some yarn from your web site and I just wanted to say I absolutely love it the brava worsted yarn is so soft I've all ready completed two project for my toddler in two days I haven't tried any of the other but I can say for sure it is softer then anything I've run my hands across in MICHEALS 😍😍😍😍😍😍
That yarn is absolutely gorgeous! When you held up the finished blanket, I could see the knitted yarn. It's very "tonal" (to use a quilting term). Many different hues throughout the yarn. I now know where to get yarn for my hubby's new throw! Thank you! I love Knit Picks' new knitting needles- absolutely awesome wood! Which knitting needles were you using in the video? They were a really unusual shape! Were they the new ones?
This is a great tutorial, but honestly, if you are a complete beginner to knitting altogether, you probably should not try a blanket as an initial project.
Exactly- I have been knitting for 4 years now, and I still occasionally have difficulty knitting blankets like this... I think casting on so many stitches would be difficult for some beginners🤷♀️
It’s a *great* idea to make one of these and send it to Australia. We are 5 days into 2020 and half of the country is burning down. Half a billion animals have tragically died, and blankets are being accepted for the animals that barely managed to escape but got sent to veterinary centres.
love your videos ... you are amazing ... by watching this video i found a mistake i been doing ... and the reason my stitches dont look even .. THANK YOU SO MUCH >>> your awesome.
what should i do if i want to make this blanket but just a little smaller? would i just measure out what i want and do less cast on knots? really don't want to mess anything up with the pattern, any help would be appreciated!
3:19 What exactly is 12 balls of yarn 🧶? I want to start on this project soon but I don’t quite know how much yarn that would be. I’m a beginner but I feel confident starting this project, just after I know how much yarn to buy!!!
So when switching colours, does that mean you knit stitch as per normal or do you do a slip stitch on that first stitch of that new row colour?? That bit wasn't clear
If you are purchasing yarn in a skien and don't have a yarn winder @ home ask the yarn store if they will put it into balls or cakes for you. Most will do it for free. Just know you won't be able to return excess balls once opened if you buy extra but winding THAT much yarn by hand is going to take quite a while.
Hi, I am an absolute beginner and was wondering what would be the best needles to start with? It looks like the interchangeable needles might be useful but I am not sure of sizing.
I own the radiant interchangeable knitting needles I just want to know if other cables fit these needles for example knitter pride cable, the cables to these needle aren’t long enough and I didn’t notice they didn’t come with small piece metal to attach another cable .❤️❤️🌸🌹
Hello Ivey, our needles are not manufactured to work with other cables. You can use our Options Interchangeable Knitting Needle Cable Connectors, to join two cables as seen here... tinyurl.com/t3o7qxt
I love this and want to do this but I need to adapt it to a baby blanket. Do you have the measure for that by chance? Stitch count. Sorry to sound lazy but if you already had them ...
you could easily just halve or quarter the stitch or row count to make a smaller blanket or one with smaller stripes, so long as the pattern repeat doesn't get messed up (which with just knit stitches would be very difficult to do) you can alter things as you like.
Thanks for making the video.. It is very informative. So, what would I do if I want to make a extra wide blanket and cannot find the length of the circular needles? I mean, around 100 to 120 inch wide. Attemp to make a 'super king" size blanket.
hello, I've started this as side project. but I am not sure how many balls of yarn I will need I have six balls of 6ozs. so I have two balls of the three colors I picked to do this in. will this be enough? its 170gs 6oz balls.
How many yards do you have? It depends on the weight category of your yarn. 100g of Fingering weight could be 440 yards, while 100g of Super Bulky weight could be only 44 yards. The blanket calls for a Worsted weight yarn, 12 hanks of 273 yards/100g, for a total of 3276 yards/1200g. Since you should have 1020g of yarn, if you are using a similar weight you are likely short on yardage to make the blanket as shown.
Sorry for not replying sooner! Looks like you should have 1,890 yards. The pattern calls for 3,276 yards. If you're gauge (how many stitches you get per inch) matches the pattern, you will likely be short on yarn.
Carson, it depends on what you want! Worsted is much more common for blankets; it will be warmer and heavier than a sport weight blanket, require less yards, and knit up faster.
I did my first row of stitch just find. But at the very end, my two needs are still attached. I can't slip my one needle right out to start my next line. What do you recommend? Thanks so much
Now, I'm not the most experienced knitter and I'm not quite sure i understood you correctly, but to me it kind of sounds like instead of turning your work you accidentally joined in the round which would mean you're not making a flat blanket anymore.
This is a huge detail that was left out for me in particular. She mentions switching colors, and I agree with most of the other comments saying it would’ve been helpful to have the camera angle be on her hands while switching from one color to another, but she doesn’t explain how to switch skeins of the same color
When u run out of yarn & u want 2 add another. Do u tie it 2 the 1st 1, or just add it 2 it, then weave it n there later? Cuz the camera didn't show the whole thing up close!!!
It's generally much easier to just use the new yarn as if it were the previous one without connecting the two in my experience, though there are some videos on youtube that show how to join yarns seamlessly. (such as the one by VeryPinkKnits)
i grab both yarns together and do a loose knot close to the project and continue knitting with the new color. after a few rows you can come back to the color change, untie the loose knot and weave in both tails
Thank you for watching our videos. Be sure to subscribe and turn on notifications. Happy knitting everyone!

I am teaching myself to knit. Seeing the color change up close and personal would have been a huge help 😲.
There are other colour change tutorials that show that technique.
Never thought knitting would be so expensive.
Jhareli Rodriguez doesn’t have to be, but I completely understand the initial sticker shock!!

same! this blanket with this yarn will cost $100!!!!
Always look for cheaper yarn that is the same size as the one used in the pattern. They are using Merino which is high quality but expensive.
Buy yarn from Michaels, AC Moore or Joanns because you can use coupons.
You knit all of that in front of the camera?! omg give me a couch, tea and music, can't do it without!

how essential is needle size to making the blanket properly?

Hi, very nice tutorial.. I want to buy yarn which u used in your tutorial..I an from India.. how to buy ur yarn??
Hello! Right now, we only ship to the US, Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom. Sorry!
Question do all 4 colors end in 62 garter ridges for a total rows of 248 rows
Hi! How do I join the 2 skeins of yarn together (same color)? Would it be the same technique as switching colors?
This is a huge detail that was left out for me in particular. She mentions switching colors, and I agree with most of the other comments saying it would’ve been helpful to have the camera angle be on her hands while switching from one color to another, but she doesn’t explain how to switch skeins of the same color
When u run out of yarn & u want 2 add another. Do u tie it 2 the 1st 1, or just add it 2 it, then weave it n there later? Cuz the camera didn't show the whole thing up close!!!
That's really a personal decision. it will hide better if you just add the new yarn and weave in later :)
