Are the bobins varnished originally? If yes do you have to sans them for the pens in k to hold? Otherwise I suppose traditional wood painting would be good too...

Hi! Yes they are varnished and I use a fine grade sandpaper to rough up the surface so the inks will stick, same if you want to use paints, you would need to lightly sand first
