      In reality, this city only had one true roundabout to start with. The other concentric circles, although being round, weren't acting as roundabouts because they had 4 ways intersections all over it.
      Topologically, they were just rounded blocks.

      Well, the idea of a roundabout is reducing the junctions to T-junctions and such, so it makes sense when many of the original built ones have even a "6 points" junctions!

      just make sure you get the traffic manage mod biffa uses, it's literally unplayable without it imo...
      for example it automatically sets traffic lights on all 4 or more lane roads on EVERY intersection so roundabouts don't work with anything but 2 lane roads which limits you pretty quickly also the lane pirority in vanilla is a nightmare in a six lane roundabout they practically only ever use the outer most 2, if you're lucky 3, lanes it's just insanely annoying
      so playing vanilla you're 90% of the time better off using 2 lane roads and highways almost exclusively

    I build paths everywhere and pedestrians do not cross roads, I am always on the hunt for pedestrians, so you noticing the pedestrians right away was awesome, loved it!
    Pedestrians at each crossing do not slow down traffic too much so not many people think about them, but when each section does a little, a lot of them, over time, do a lot of slowing down over all. I love putting my cities on high speed and just watching the traffic zoom with no resistance.
    Yea, it's like electricity, one resistor will not do much but a lot of them one after another can stop the flow of electricity.

In the real world licences are issued to car and driver and it would be a steady source of income for the city. • @MsHojat

    When I played this game years ago around the time it launched I found that you can have up to 8 way intersections with very efficient/fast (but unrealistic/buggy) traffic throughput as long as they're all 2 lane roads. (no mods used)
    Those 6 way intersections could be converted into an 8 way intersection of only 2 lane roads, and have 2 pairs of roads merge to connect to each side of that main throughput road. It would look a bit weird, but it should work.
    In fact *I made an entire city that had only 2 intersections* (excluding entry/exit), both of which were 8-ways.

  • @SidneyKenson
    @SidneyKenson 5 років тому

    The main issues on the outbound main roads are the monorail stations on top of the road. People will interfere with the traffic underneath when trying to get on the station, and don't forget about all the people who will take their cars out of their pockets to drive away from the station to wherever they need to, if they're too lazy to walk the last 500m to their destination. But good job bringing traffic to over 80% in that city!

  • @TrekkingPals2
    @TrekkingPals2 4 роки тому

    @6:47 I would guess that these highlight roads are a result of defining a 'road', which can be done through road selection. I bet this would affect how 'Priority Road' is enforced and also might be affected by mods that attempt to address a 'Road' in a similar was as this (no trucks and such). I play on PS4 currently and until making the switch I still have to use the policy 'Old Town' on a singly defined road (by way of making a district out of exactly and only the road and the affected buildings) from time-to-time in order to prevent trucks and various traffic from entering a certain area of the map.
    Very much enjoying the videos. I started playing this game after watching a few of your videos. Gives me a good place to vent some of my pent up road rage accumulated during the day. :D

    Things in or around roundabouts actually works quite nicely if you disallow all vehicles on the inner/outer most lane. they will still go in to deliver goods and busses will still stop at their busstop but wont stop any other traffic. Its probably not quite as efficient as just not having anything but it sometimes looks really cool. Like in an industry area that you want to look busy without having traffic jams. Also, with the move it mod you can make a T-junction for the cargo train things by moving the delivery road right into the entrance. That way they drive right in with the speed of the delivery road. if you combine those two you can make a great looking busy industry area with great traffic.

    One of the big issues is the design itself. All the leaves of the clover leaf point to the city center, and traffic bottlenecks at those locations. I agree with you, spread out some of the buildings so traffic moderates in the outer areas instead of congesting all towards the center.

  • @Martinspire
    @Martinspire 5 років тому

    Alternative to having a roundabout at the major junctions at the end might be to have the bigger roundabouts on a different level than that junction. That makes it go from 6 to 4 connecting lanes. And if you adjust the speeds on the major lanes to be higher than the inside lanes, you also have less traffic down the middle straights. A few slip lanes later and you hardly have traffic on that major junction.

    You should use traffic lights, not stops, around that outer ring road that edges the monorails. You use traffic lights on a roundabout to stop one direction choking traffic on all others. A roundabout makes a high volume traffic direction take over, but if you have two high volume traffic roads connecting, one will choke the other, and you should in that case use roundabout lights to allow both high volume roads to get their slice of the roundabout.

    roundabout over roudabouts the logical rule is: dont get 2 layers of a multilayer roundabout going the same direction

    My solution?
    1. Make the two centre roundabouts into a magic roundabout
    2. Also make the parkway roundabouts at four and five blocks out into a magic roundabout
    3. Make the six-lane two way "cloverleaf" into three-lane one-way -anticlockwise- clockwise petalabouts
    4. Replace the radial monorails with metro lines that go through the city
    5. Route new monorails to run around the petalabouts and link them together via the parkway magic roundabout. Landscape the scenic areas to attract tourists to ride the monorail.
    6. Add cross streets in the neighborhoods and provide a variety of zoning in each hood. Mixed use is best. Keep heavy industry separate!

    It seems to me that the problem is that many people drive to the hearth of the inner circular town instead of going around it. Just make it a district and ban all traffic going through it that doesn't start or end inside the district and they would have to go around it on the roundabout

  • @KX36

    -One of the 2 inner roundabouts might benefit from being changed to be a counter-rotating gyratory. Probably the outer one, then the inner roundabout would be pretty normal and it would sort of be a magic roundabout.
    -The ring road around the central island should be a grade-separated highway.
    -The metro loops need moving off of that ring road and into the petals, since the majority of the people are going between petals and not to the central island. Either that or keep those metro stations and move them across the road and next to the monorail stations and put a second outer loop around the petals.
    -And there needs to be some public transport into the central island other than buses.

    How is that extra pedestrian crossing made right there at the Posh Mall before the intersection at the 14:22 mark? Might not be needed right there but it made me think that would be nice to be able to add that in certain situations.

    At 6:30 wouldn't it make more sense if the two concentric roundabouts in the center went in opposite directions (one clockwise one counter-clockwise)? Feels like that would simplify traffic, that way a person trying to go left doesn't have to go all the way around the roundabout.

  • @jrm78

    In Teaville, those pedestrian bridges you put in near the monorail stations would be parks where the Cims pay for the privilege of crossing the street.

    The outermost circle around the inner city should have a much higher speed limit than the inner circles. That way more people would go around the center and enter the center-city segment from the outside at the most convenient place instead of converging at the very center and finding their way outwards from there.

  • @Lilian040210

    @city owner: u can build a metro similar to Moscow's. There's already a circle line, now u just have to add straight lines going from one district to another with stations close to the round line's so Cims can switch the lines when they need to. Instead of the monorails ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • @MDP1702
    @MDP1702 5 років тому

    Maybe you should not allow crossing the outer roundabout?
    Basically traffic that wants to get on the inner roundabout first need to move onto the outer roundabout and at the next intersection move onto the inner roundabout. Vice versa to move from the inner roundabout to outside the roundabouts. This will mean cars won't be waiting at the intersection, but rather switch lanes between intersections on the outer roundabout.
    And the large two-lane roundabout right outside the center is in my eyes rather useless unless you use another roundabout instead of an intersection to connect it to the other roads.

  • @thingsofsuch

    Should have just addded metro to all the spines of the leaves, that was where at every junction you would inherit the floaters on the rails that walked along the monorail. Putting underground junctions to the existing only circle would have helped get those walkers to and from the ends where there was the huge attractions and the airport.

    Just for the sake of it, I want to try that design in my current game. But to avoid all those center roundabouts, I would make each of them using a different transportation system. Like one for cars, one for buses only, maybe one for metro, etc. Using one for cars between each of the public transportation and making them more than 10 units appart from each other.
    Will see if my city crash and burn or not :)

    I look at it, and it may look like a rotary in shape, but there's only one rotary in this city, and that's the one at the center. I view this as more of a concentric grid, where instead of using latitude and longitude on a rectangular plane, you use polar coordinates (radius and angle from north, or whatever you want to call "0"). I actually would have expected the one way roads at the various radii to be alternating in directions.

    Around the center, I would treat anything but the innermost and outermost roundabout as a side road. So the ideal place to put busstops, parking, places people want to drive to/from, etc. The inner and outermost were wisely kept building free.
    The outermost can be seen as a shortcut/sideway. I have seen those sometimes in practice, where there is a special road/lane just to get to the next connection. Maybe you could even make the outer counter-clockwise, if the Pathfinding supports it.
    I am really confused that the roundabouts are not "yield when entering" already. In my country it is a standing law, without any need for extra signs:
    If you got the roundabout sign, it also means "yield for those already on" and "only blink when leaving" (that way people can see the future empty spaces).

    Ive been thinking recently that nj’s jughandle system isnt so bad, at least compared to where i am now and every green light on main roads HAS to spend time on the left turn only signal instead of letting everyone go straight. With a jughandle everyone on the main road goes straight through the intersection. Doesnt mean i like how they tend to be placed back to back with highway onramps though. I dont need the anxiety of accidentally turning onto the highway when i just wanted to go left. It also takes up an awkward amount of space...

    Needs more public transit hubs, needs pedestrian bridges (far too many pedestrian crossings at the wrong points) at all those big intersections.
    Nowhere near enough lines, stations, vehicles, connections.
    I'd maybe make the middle of the map a huge transit hub ?
    Also, you staring yourself blind at one lane each way may not be correct often.
    Sometimes you just need more lanes going a certain way, and when there are almost no people going left or right it's fine to use those also for going straight on so far more vehicles will go past that section per minute.
    With the short roads if there is a long line you might bunch up several roads, where else they coudl occupy 2-3 lanes and all go at once.
