While we're chatting up how cool Troy and the Queens crew is, why has the world forgotten about Alain Johannes? One of the most insanely talented dudes while being woven through the greatest acts of the 80s, 90s until now. In a band with Flea before RHCP? Check. Queen sof the stone age? HIs live at reading 06 bass play is legendary. Vocalist for Eleven? Check. Touring with Them Crooked Vultures? Check.
Personally ...Like Clockwork is my favorite Queens album I love how Troy and Josh weaved their guitar parts together in Smooth Sailing and I Appear Missing. Plus I think contains some really personal lyrics from Josh which goes off the dark topics Baxter mentioned.
He's in A Perfect Circle & Queens of the Stone Age, 2 fantastic bands & other bands I'm not aware of. We can start & stop figuring out why he's AWESOME right there!
The female bass player in A Perfect Circle is Paz Lenchantin- now the bass player for the Pixies. Much like Troy- her mark has been left on a lot of music out there.
Love TVL & his fans. Going back to Failure, I believe TVL joined as touring guitarist to support their Fantastic Planet tour. The record was already recorded & guitar tones set by Ken Andrews and Greg Edwards. That said, Failure’s Fantastic Planet tones could be foundational- or at least informational- to TVLs tonal palette.
if you're a fan of Failure, i can recommend with confidence another outstanding Midwest band called Hum. lovely, fantastic fellows and incredible musicians with a soft-spoken sensibility that speaks volumes. if you're unfamiliar with their material, start with their final record 'Inlet', dropped with complete surprise after a 22 year hiatus. Baxter: their hearts are pure analog. right up your alley, sir.
@@ryangunwitch-black if you connected with "Astronaut" (the record you've mentioned above), i'm certain you'll enjoy their other works. Sadly, Bryan St. Pierre, their incredible drummer and resident sci-fi geek, passed away way too early this year, after recording Inlet. i hope you have fun exploring their catalogue. headphones and focused-listening recommended.
I was at the “Birkenstock” concert. Hollywood Palladium. Funny stuff. Primus opened (see Jerry Was a Racecar Driver for concert footage) I show up in one of the two vids, don’t remember which one. Also got into a bit of a scuffle with a guy selling counterfeit merch before the show. All in all, a fun night.
Gabe from Echopark is the man!!! My Echopark 4t5a amp sounds like no other amp. It is its own thing. The j model guitar I own the same thing. Sounds like nothing else out there but in the most amazing way!!! Soul for days!!!
LOVE FAILURE! Fantastic Planet was great. The album before it (with the frog was also fantastic - though it has some tracks that sounded similar to one another - but they were good and JUST different enough
i like his signature for the specs, and realized who he was after the fact. I actually own his sig, but across 2 partscasters. I'm going to use the body with a modern spec wenge Warmoth neck, and the neck is on a vintage spec Tele (but that 7.25 radius is a bit rough)
One of the best QOTSA live shows would be live in session KCRW. It’s a small intimate show! And the guys are just tearing it up! Highly suggest a watch!
Troy in JA? yeah, that works for me. Much more than Dave in RHCP's. Still love Kyuss too! Built audience old school...play parties and invite everyone- a la VH. I will always have much respect for QOTSA and Josh for how they stepped up in Italy after Mark Sandman's passing.
Thanks for tuning in good question, unfortunately we were just so busy we didn't have time to keep doing it at the moment. We have plans to revise her down the road just a wee bit. Thanks for asking!
Maynard James….and he will kick all of our @$$e$ in an arm wrestling match. Troy is outstanding and has been for a long time. I was personally surprised when he left a Perfect Circle for QOTSA.
TVL is the reason I play Jazzmasters. I have seen Queens but I have seen him perform with the damned at cruel world festival switch The Damned and he had the best tone of the night regardless of The Church being there
I'm sure someone else probably corrected you guys here but...Troy did not actually record with Failure, he only toured with the band as Ken Andrews and co layered and had effect madness on their albums, especially Fantastic Planet, the album he joined as a touring member. His recording work on the first A Perfect Circle album is very minimal (the high note part you refer to in the video before the second verse of "Judith" is, like most of the album, played by guitarist Billy Howerdel). He also did not record with QOTSA until Lullabies to Paralyze. I'm guessing you guys probably just saw Jane's Addiction with Smashing Pumpkins in the past week hence this video. I just saw him as well and hate to say it, disappointed. Some songs were good, some he fumbled through and only seemed to learn maybe one of Dave's solo's, the album version of "Mountain Song." Yea, Troy has a cool style (look-wise anyways), but I've never actually thought of him as a guy that has his own 'style,' that once you hear it, you know it's him as he always seems to be in bands with guys who already have their own thing (Ken Andrews, Billy Howerdel, Josh Homme)
My first experience hearing Troy was with Jane's Addiction. I've listened to QOTSA and don't like them. He's a monster though. People need to hear this dude play.
There is so much too say. Troy is a great player reminds me of Nels Kline in his ability fit the situation and make a statement. Jane's in 1990 were the most amazing new music of that time. Here is the link to the Birkenstock incident. ua-cam.com/video/A00foJenAGA/v-deo.html
Seriously Failure is legit, more people need to listen to them. Its weird Baxter calls them "not grunge" ~ they always seemed like the guitar tone-nerd version of Nirvana...
Because he always is wearing a sharp looking suit. It always looks well fitted (Maybe off the rack?), not like some cast off he got out of the rubbish bin…
He dresses like a Rock star and not like a guy on vacation at Disney in cargo shorts, or some slob who stopped by Guitar Center on the way to 7-11 or AutoZone…

Totally agree an unsung hero! his guitar solo with Them Crooked Vultures live @ Rock Werchter 2010 is epic
I agree plus his work with Mark Lanegan.
Also, with Chris Cornell
I haven’t forgotten about Alain. Awesome all rounder. He’s a musical Swiss Army knife
Alain just doesn't look like a rock star, basically. Absolute legend though all the same
Songs for the Deaf (2001) one of the greatest rock albums of the 21st century
Agreed! all the way there
Personally ...Like Clockwork is my favorite Queens album I love how Troy and Josh weaved their guitar parts together in Smooth Sailing and I Appear Missing. Plus I think contains some really personal lyrics from Josh which goes off the dark topics Baxter mentioned.
100% agree
Failure is one of my favorite bands of all time. They are objectively criminally underrated.
I say this everyday
A-fukn-men sir. What a band 🤯
One of my favorite guitar players, and I just bought that signature gold Jazzmaster. Its so good.
Converted my dad into a Queens of the Stone Age fan when we saw them live in 2018. He said they reminded him of David Bowie!
QOTSA have such a cool, twisted vibe and sound, and Troy's been a key part of that. Kudos, dude.
Troy's tearing it up in Jane's!!!
Just saw him in ATL & he was PHENOMENAL!!!
🤔He's a musical chameleon...
He's in A Perfect Circle & Queens of the Stone Age, 2 fantastic bands & other bands I'm not aware of. We can start & stop figuring out why he's AWESOME right there!
Troy Van Leeuwen is awesome. As is QoTSA.
The female bass player in A Perfect Circle is Paz Lenchantin- now the bass player for the Pixies. Much like Troy- her mark has been left on a lot of music out there.
Saw Queens at Red Rocks a few years ago. Incredible show, Troy was great.
6:53 fun fact: the Judith music video was directed by a then little known David Fincher.

I had that Hum record with "Stars'" (which is all pretty fantastic!) but never explored them further.

Hum, Far, Basement, Cave In.
@@TheAmazingSnarf inlet is an incredible album, and bryan an incredible drummer
Failure’s Fantastic Planet is an amazing album!
Yes agreed there as well!
His clothing shows he’s there for business, and having watched a dozen QOTSA live concerts on the UA-cams, his playing says that business is good…
The "Judith" music video was done by David Fincher.
I jaywalked with Troy once, can confirm he’s cooler than cool. Like elder vampire in a custom suit level of cool.
Over the charts cool
I saw the 1st APC tour in 99. Epic guitars and Maynard of course. Also Josh Freese 🤯....🤘
I was at the “Birkenstock” concert. Hollywood Palladium. Funny stuff. Primus opened (see Jerry Was a Racecar Driver for concert footage) I show up in one of the two vids, don’t remember which one. He covered for Captain Sensible in The Damned earlier this year and smashed it up!
Pretty dang cool!
His new amp is built by a friend Sean R and really works well with Queens sonic landscape.
Gabe from Echopark is the man!!! My Echopark 4t5a amp sounds like no other amp. It is its own thing. The j model guitar I own the same thing. Sounds like nothing else out there but in the most amazing way!!! Soul for days!!!
He’s a rad player!!!
David Fincher directed the Judith video. That’s why it’s so good.
I got the Oxblood TVL Jazzmaster. Love it. 🎸
Have the more recent Copper Age colour version. Never seen a better looking guitar, super bright sound too.
@@chronic_johnson_a.r.a.b yep. The vintage 65’ pickups rule 🎸
Offsets are life.
All the way:)
LOVE FAILURE! Fantastic Planet was great. The album before it (with the frog was also fantastic - though it has some tracks that sounded similar to one another - but they were good and JUST different enough
This guy is cracking me up with his JANKY Hair...he must not have a producer to tell him to comb his head.....lol

that shirt that Jonathan is wearing 💯. where can I get it? what does the label say?
Your description of him reminds me of Uncle Larry’s playing.
That's not bad company to be in:)!
@@CasinoGuitars not at all.
Well he plays in Queens of the Stone Age & I think he played on the first A Perfect Circle album
One of the best QOTSA live shows would be live in session KCRW. It’s a small intimate show! And the guys are just tearing it up! Highly suggest a watch!

Interesting tidbit: Troy Van Leeuwen also used Squier VM Jazzmaster with QOTSA: ua-cam.com/video/CfPxPzjPD9A/v-deo.html
Yes oh yes you are right!
Good day guys. What happened to the podcast? When are you gonna revisit it,and film yourselves?
Thanks for tuning in good question, unfortunately we were just so busy we didn't have time to keep doing it at the moment. We have plans to revise her down the road just a wee bit. Thanks for asking!
7:16 The "Judith" video is awesome because David Fincher directed it. Fight Club? Se7en? Oh, yes, lovers. Cool stuff.
Maynard James….and he will kick all of our @$$e$ in an arm wrestling match. Troy is outstanding and has been for a long time. I was personally surprised when he left a Perfect Circle for QOTSA.
I have this wee issue with words and names sometimes...Im working on it:) He is a killer and agreed!
Baxter, you are still the best guitar player on UA-cam. You and Johnny are just great guys with a great channel.
TVL is the reason I play Jazzmasters. I have seen Queens but I have seen him perform with the damned at cruel world festival switch The Damned and he had the best tone of the night regardless of The Church being there
I love QOTSA

Very possibly, which makes it even funnier...I suppose I have to own my backward brain thing every now and then:)
@@CasinoGuitars Cheers, sir.
All of Failure is great, but I think Magnified is still my favorite.
Nice!
failures fantastic planet album is awesome.
Agreed!
I think we’re alone now
My first experience hearing Troy was with Jane's Addiction. I've listened to QOTSA and don't like them.
He's a monster though. People need to hear this dude play.
Great video, but did the gentleman on the left roll out of bed 5 seconds before the video started?
There is so much too say. Troy is a great player reminds me of Nels Kline in his ability fit the situation and make a statement. Jane's in 1990 were the most amazing new music of that time. Here is the link to the Birkenstock incident. ua-cam.com/video/A00foJenAGA/v-deo.html
I opened for the Damned one time! With a semi original line up. Patricia Morrison on bass. (YES, I am making weird horny cat sounds)
Seriously Failure is legit, more people need to listen to them. Its weird Baxter calls them "not grunge" ~ they always seemed like the guitar tone-nerd version of Nirvana...
I think of them as Space-Grunge. If Pink Floyd or Beatles psychedelia bled into Nirvana.
Would you gentlemen please donate me a troy van line jazzmaster
Because he always is wearing a sharp looking suit.
It always looks well fitted (Maybe off the rack?), not like some cast off he got out of the rubbish bin…

All I see is the Jazzmaster.
Hes so cool because he's heard off me 🤣
Yes!
James Maynard 🙂
Ye, whoops, I have an issue with words and things sometimes!
Don’t we all? 😊 Great show again, as always, guys!
Trick question.
Jiujtsu for life!! Even for lefties JK
Because he wears the wrong clothes for the weather?
Simple. He is in a band focussing on songs, not just some blues guitarist making it all about him. Jobo is not cool. Troy is.
What is up with this dude's hair?
60 year old stylish gay dudes are very cool 😎 especially to young bears in flannel
Hot damn you nailed us:) Love it and thanks for watching!
Queens is what happens when the west coast sound runs through the real Arizona desert. It’s the SW version.
Warum machen sie sowas???
Why is the Pope catholic?
Who?
Wow, Google this shit bro and prepare for amazement
Why is he so cool?
