  • In this video, Sheri and I discuss two of the biggest tools that help us lower anxiety and close distance with people around a disagreement: empathy and listening to understand.
We want to talk about the critical importance of having a clear goal in these conversations: the goal of connection. Embracing the goal of connection means saying, “No matter what our disagreement, I will always elevate the value of you and our relationship above it. At the end of this conversation we may still disagree, but my goal is that we will also still be connected.”
Here’s an overview of everything in the video:
    You need this plan- 02:55
    Connection killers- 03:34
    The goal of connection- 05:00
How to listen to understand- 07:37
Value the relationship above the issue- 09:33

Thank you for reminding me to behave with respect and honor . I keep going back to old behavior and I distance myself and continue to protect myself and distance myself quickly . I forget the goal to connect! Thank you for your teachings and to remind us to bring kingdom principles to be honoring and to bring fuel to lower anxiety.

This really needs to be heard with everything going on today. I'm learning to see every situation from God's perspective. When I do that, I may not agree but I can empathize and have a better understanding.

In our desire to respect and love each individual, is there not a limit beyond which we must shake the dust off and move on? Wisdom knows when to leave the presence of a fool lest you reap his disdain even more or, worse yet, be drawn into a similar foolish behavior because of his provocation.

Wow going ahead with a plan in advance for what am I going to do for the moments when people disrespect or dishonor, or scare me. I never thought of that. Sounds silly to say. So simple but so important. What is the goal? ... Connect.

Plan to improve connection, add value, respect, responsibility, express empathy. pour on Love as fuel to grow. . . like water on a plant to let it grow, versus gasoline and a match.

Great points on how people just want to present their view and have no goal of understanding the other person's point of view and maintaining distance. We need to learn how to find that common ground of respect and honor to connect. Not seeing much honor in the communication I am seeing these days.
