  • Randy Lawrence has had one of the most remarkable careers in two wheels I have ever come across. He was an OG of the BMX scene in Southern California and the brother of "Factory" Phil Lawrence. He found his way into a roll as a mechanic and wound up working with "The King" Jeremy McGrath before retiring to race the Downhill World Cup for Intense. He then came back into moto to work as a trainer and carved out an amazing career for himself training guys like Jake Weimer and Ryan Villopoto.

RV came out to Oatfeild Raceway in Turlock California right after he got on a 250f and right before he went pro. I'd never seen anyone with with corner speed like he had on that day. Mike Allesi and Michael Brandes raced A class that day, and RV was on the second gate. He caught and passed the entire A class in moto 1, and Brandes won the first A class moto. I think RV crashed after passing both of them in moto 2, and Brandes crashed in moto 2 giving Alessi the overall. But for some reason Cycle News let Tony Allesi write an article about the race, and he completely whitewashed the entire weekend. You'd never know that RV was the man that day by reading that article. After watching him smoke those guys, I knew RV was a special dude

I used to be friends with RV’s mechanic before he turned pro. I used to race RC cars with my buddy and he stopped by one day with a pickup full of two kawis and a road bike and this small ginger kid. RV shoulder bumped me and they made fun of my 450 shock! At that time I remember they had just returned from racing in FL. I knew who RV was as an amateur but it was so cool to watch him become one of the greatest!

Alessi peaked as an amateur, Villopoto peaked as a professional.

@@lukefish7562 its actually not and you sound very very ignorant saying that. He did very well on Rockstar Suzuki and factory KTM should have even won the championship in 2009. so lets stop with eh he peaked as a amateur. at least get your facts straight before talking shit.

Randy is an awesome guy. Rode BMX with him when he was wrenching for Doug Dubach when the motocross races came thru Minnesota. Down to earth genuine guy who was scary good on a bmx bike too.

Couldn’t bench the bar ? Yea sure he was putting in work , sound more like he was taking some type of ped , which I don’t have a problem with i actually would agree with peds for riders jus cuz it’s mostly the motorcycle that you have to ride n how bad guys get hurt who need the best recovery, but I get it , it’s look down upon if your taking something, yet people don’t know if your a 15th place guy your probably only going to get 10th at best but if your a 2nd place guy then you’ll deff have more chance of getting 1st
