    Greetings from Amsterdam, The Netherlands. I just recently bought my first Drosera Capensis from my local garden centre in Osdorp. It's a beautiful healthy plant and it only cost me, €2.50; can't be bad 😊. I've planted it in a glass container with sphagnum moss and keeping it moist with distilled water. Each day, I also give it a quick one squirt atomizer spray with distilled water. I've fed it once with pulverized betta fish pellets sprinkled over the leaves. They immediately curled up and stayed like this for a couple of days. I'm keeping it on a windowsill where the sunlight is nicely diffused. Whatever I'm doing, the plant loves it. It's already doubled in size. New leaves are shooting up. It's really surprising how fast it grows. I know I'm going to enjoy this super interesting carnivorous plant 😀.

      @@desertplantsofavalon Greetings from Amsterdam: An update on my Drosera Capensis. At the time of my first posting, I'd purchased a large tulip shaped glass bowl. It was specifically bought to be used as a terrarium for the sundew.
      I lined the bottom of the bowl with black fish tank pebbles. On top of this, I cut and placed a circular piece of mosquito netting. This is simply a physical separator. I then made a 50/50 blend of nutrient free peat moss and perlite. This was applied liberally on top of the netting. The sundew was carefully extracted from its container with the soil. It was planted deep into the peat moss/perlite blend. The plant was then surrounded by sphagnum moss and topped up with demineralized water. Not only does the terrarium look beautiful, the plant is thriving 😃.
      I've moved it outside and it's happily chomping aphids, small beetles and flies 😋. It's producing a huge amount of new leaf shoots. It's been a bit dry here in The Netherlands, so I give it a top up with the demineralized water when needed. The rest is up to nature. All I know, is I have a very healthy and easy to maintain plant 😃.
      My sarracenia pitcher plant is also thriving. For the moment, I'm keep both plants on a table I'm growing my kitchen herbs on. The sundew and sarracenia work as great natural pest controllers 👍.

    Wow you have such a stunning collection! I seen those Peyote cacti on the screenshot you posted a few days ago, I have heard that they are possibly the slowest growing cactus. you must have had them a few years at the least to be even that size. You gotta feel so proud not 2 mention always close to the perfect place to re-balance & lift your spirits if you ever feel blue. I am always admiring the awesome specimens constantly impressed.Thanks again.🌵

      So happy you love the plant collection :-D yes the Peyote cacti are very slow growing and are often grafted to speed up the growth but I have mine all on their own roots but they are so slow to grow but a wonderful cactus :-D I have had some of them for 25 years :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you tons of love and happiness and heaps of PLANT POWER your way for a sunny Sunday today XXXXX

      I've also got a peyote cactus. I've had mine for 12 years. They are super slow growers. It's about half again larger from when I first purchased it. It's actual age, is probably closer to 15 or 16 years. I live in The Netherlands, (not exactly the scorching Chihuahuan desert 🤣). Even with this drawback, I've found it really easy to maintain. I simply keep it in a warm sunny spot on a windowsill. I water it when I remember and feed it cacti fertilizer once, or twice a year. That's it. I'm still waiting for it to flower.

    Hi Lyn. If you run out of rain water, and can't get de-ionised water either, then you can get reverse osmosis water from petstores that sell marine fish. it should be close to zero TDS too, which is very pure. It's not too expensive if you only need a small amount to tide you over until it rains again. :-)

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  6 років тому +1

      THanks so much Chris for letting me know about the reverse osmosis water :-D thats a brilliant help as its hard to find water for sale in Ireland haha :-D its hard to believe we are having to look to buy water with how much rain we normally get haha :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you tons of love and happiness and heaps of PLANT POWER your way from Belfast to Limerick for a sunny Sunday today XXXXX

    I get a new plant now my Christmas cactus has bounced back to life (drosea capensis) do a little search and who should pop up 😁
    Mine is very healthy and doing well as we have had sooooo much rain.
    Doing the tray method and given her a trim with the few dead stems. She is eating up all the fruit flies that descend every summer from the fruit farm behind our house and the green fly that were eating my rose.
    She is called medusa as the green stems remind me of the green snake hair Medusa has.
    Hope yours recovered with some TLC.

    Needs some strong light and maybe abit of humidity by the looks of it. That normally sorts them out and gets them producing the dew dropplets so they can catch prey again. Hope you turn that one round.

    Oh, I used to have one of these. I got it to control fruit flies that were hanging around my worm bin. Are you going to let it sit in water? Have you heard of that? I bought mine from a carnivorous nursery, and that's what they recommended. And I mean sit in water all the time.

    • @desertplantsofavalon

    Best results I’ve had with my carnivores plants if I’ve ran out of rain water is with my dads pond water. I use about 5 litres of it per week of it. I wait until he’s topped up his pond wait 4/5 days then use the pond water. This seems to give time for the minerals to dissipate from the water and be filtered out. It is possible to use tap water with them but you need to test the ppm of the of the mineral content of the water. There are some good videos on here for water testing but I don’t take the risk. I had one of these plants and virtually lost it because it dried out and got way too hot during the end June/early July heat we had here in the midlands so make sure to keep it moist at all times. I also nearly lost a pitcher plant. The rest of my mini collection is doing great surviving on pond water

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  6 років тому

      Thats fantastic advice about the pond water and that you have great success with it over the long dry sunny spell we had here :-D thats a brilliant tip thank you so much for sharing and thanks so much for watching :-D sending tons of love and happiness and PLANT POWER your way for a FANTASTIC day XXXXX

    hi , Ahoj I'm new to the carnivorous plant scene help. I recently bought sundew seeds on Amazon. Drosera seeds 100 seeds (Mix)
    1.) Do filter jugs make sense?
    2.) Is sundew from a filter jug healthy?
    3.)What should you pay attention to when buying a filter jug?
    4) Which is better Dafi or BRITA?
    5) I was told that boiled and then cooled water is good for sundews. Can anyone confirm this?
    6) Should we hand feed them at some point? as the domes are closed at the seedling stage to maintain humidity, preventing insects from entering.
    7._Should we open the dome every few days to get some fresh air?
    8.)I would like to, I thought. catching rainwater. ?
    9.) I wish, I thought. catching snow water?
    sorry if my english is not good 🙁
