    I'm in Phnom Penh and use Charles Schwab. I always get reimbursed on ATM fees. You have to have a pre existing account opened in the US, once you're outside of the US you can't open a new Schwab account. Great video, liked.

    Thanks for this video.
    I did a ton of research before coming to Siem Reap last September. That didn't stop me from making a boatload of mistakes. If I could do it all over again, there are some things I'd do the same, but many more things I'd do differently.
    I just got back from a short trip to Kampot/Kep/Koh Tonsay, and I loved it. Seriously considering moving to Kampot when my lease expires at the end of March. Hopefully, I've learned something in the past 3 + months, and this next move will go a lot better than the last!

      @tom - check with your airline & the Cambodian govt agency in charge of that (maybe Office of Quarantine, Wildlife, etc). I've heard an interview wherein the dog owner of a German Shepherd brought it to Malaysia. The GSD is a restricted breed in that country & there were certain stipulations before he was allowed to bring the dog. One was that the house where he stayed must have a fenced yard for the dog. He had to provide a copy of his lease & pics of the house + lot. Rules vary per country.

      @AutumninAsia  15 днів тому +1

      Very simple. You see a motorbike you like, agree on a price and make sure they have the correct registration card. Be sure to verify the registration numbers match.
      Sign the sales slip, Thumbprint and pay.
      You will not have to register the bike anywhere and the registration card will not have your name on it. Yeah, I know, that sounds crazy with the first owners name on it and not yours, but this is Cambodia.
      I heard that you can change the name on it but not sure how to do that.

    Good video. Am interested to know, with you living so close to it, how many times have you been to Angkor Wat ? I spent a few days exploring it, but it's so big you could probably spend at least a week to see all of it properly. Also do you ever catch the boat down the river to Phnom Penh ? When I got it the boat got stuck on a sandbank after scraping the bottom of the river a few times in the wide lake section of it. It took about an hour to get it free of the sandbank with the help of another boat. Found out later they often have to stop the service when the river gets too low during the dry season. It must've been on the limit of that happening at the time. Despite the worry of being stuck it was a very pleasant and farely cheap way to travel, while seeing the villages and countryside. Much better than the long bus trip.
    👍

      I've been to Angkor Wat about 10 times. I have a free yearly pass (an offer once you have lived here for two years).
      No I have not been on that boat ride but it sounds like a lot of fun.

      I know some people who are doctors that never went to school. They leaned hands on in the 80s and 90s . Their salaries are between $1,000 to $2,000 a month. How much are universities? How much is their salaries? Don’t make sense to go to school just to make a little over $1,000 . Just open a stand selling noodles and you will make more than $1,000 a month and no school is needed.

      I have been living in SR for eight years. I bank with Schwab. I don’t use ATMs. I use SWIFT to transfer money. Schwab takes $15 and ABA $10 on a transfer. But I transfer larger amounts so it really is cheap to do it that way. I know Schwab will reimburse but I think it could become a problem when living over here plus I don’t want the hassle. I never use Grab or PASSAP. I hate to ride in those sardine cans. I find them quite uncomfortable and you can’t see anything. I have a couple of friends that are Tuk Tuk guys and I use them exclusively. It costs more and I always pay them more than they ask. I use my ABA card to pay for most things. Beyond that, I use Riel exclusively. I have a motorbike for most local trips. I mostly use the Tuk Tuks when want to go out to the temples or the lake. I have a large family and spend 95% of my time with Khmer people. I eat very little Western food. We eat at home for almost every meal. Head out to a restaurant on Saturday evenings and even then rarely see any expats at the places that we frequent.

    • @kitty_s23456
      @kitty_s23456 17 днів тому +5

      @schow - as the other person said, it depends on what you want. Kampot is near the beach, SR is inland (and nearer to TH). Kampot has slightly cooler temps due to sea breeze but SR has more rental choices, restos & expats.
      I suggest to go see both - rent a hotel room in both for a week or so, before getting a long term lease. From SR, there's a night bus to Kampot or you can go there by bus from Phnom Penh (2 to 3 hrs).

    • @KhmerMinnesnowta

      Kampot is next to Vietnam border while Siem Reap is closer to Thai border. Kampot is more layback to relax, SR is more tourist for the ancient ruins!

Something I've been concerned about. How on earth though, in such a big city, can it be navigated when you are new to it and on a moped? Assuming I have the guts to buy/rent one. I expect I will rent one and see if I can handle the roads. I think taxi fares will still mount up too much. I'll figure it out when I get there. :)

  • @havaianuu
    @havaianuu 17 днів тому +2

    If I may make a suggestion, please make a video expanding on renting, since it is one of the highest costs someone will incur. With your 3 years of experience who are in a position that not many are in to explain the possible downsides of renting, in particular regarding deposits from your own perspective and experience. Since it's the landlord that holds the deposit and highly unlike that a deposit will not be required, a renter should not have a deposit of more than one month's rent. The renter may want to move for many different reasons after the lease is up, be it too noisy at night, found a better and more convenient place or just moving to another country, it will be up to the landlord if and how much he will refund the renter. Again using the example of $300 per month with a one month deposit, in a 3 month lease, if the landlord doesn't give back any refund the cost the actual cost will be $400 per month, if the deposit was 2 month's rent that rental would cost $500 per month, therefore making the $300 monthly deal an expensive endeavor. Renters should never allow the landlord to know that they are leaving the country for a less scrupulous landlord will surely not give any of the deposit back.

    • @AutumninAsia
      @AutumninAsia  16 днів тому

    Great video, I agree with every point you made, it's valuable info for anywhere in the world, not just Cambodia. While I agree with your views, I beg to differ that the renter doesn't pay for the rental agent. While going thru an agency will save someone a lot of time and hassle, it will cost the agency's fee. For example, if a landlord wants to rent a place for $250 and he knows that the agency will charge him $50, he will list the place for $300, I'm under the impression, perhaps wrongly, that such charge is a recurring fee as long as you rent said space. The video is valuable info for newbie travelers but known by seasoned travelers.

    I think indonesia is way cheaper,,you can rent a new house in a new neighborhood for $650 per year,,not per month, I said per year,,you can't bit that,,,ac all day,,$21 per month

    • @AutumninAsia
      @AutumninAsia  15 днів тому +1

      Thanks for your input! I will check out the rent prices in Indonesia.

      @AutumninAsia Don't look in Jakarta or Bali,,those places are a bit expensive,,,for example, in Tangerang , Banten lebak, cities like Citra Raya and citra maja,,all those cities are new and they have 100s of new and beautiful developments with security 24 hours a day,,,some of those houses go for $650 per year,,others go for a $1000 per year,,it depends on the owner and how many bedrooms you want,,mine was two bedroom with a nice parking space for two ,a nice living room and a nice kitchen,,,,in fact, most of those houses are empty since covid 19,,,and you could get a deal for less than $650 per year, and if you go to an old neighborhood,,your rent would be pennies on the dollar

      Immigration is ghastly in Indo.

      @joeplacetas1 15 днів тому

      @ricosadao828 no problem with immigration, there are steps that if you fallow them,,all would be fine, besides,,as we say in the USA,,money talks and bullshit walks,,,the government corruption here goes from the bottom all the way to the top,,so if you can pay the administrative fees,,that's the cute name they use for bribes,,you should be fine

    If you don’t have an International license, you’re operating the scooter illegally.-no biggie, BUT. if there’s an accident, your at fault no matter what for operating a vehicle illegally in the country.

    Schwab does not want their clients living full time abroad while getting all their ATM Fees reimbursed .Most " Independent " guys just don't tell us they have someone in the US maintaining an address for them and/or getting their mail

    • @AutumninAsia
      @AutumninAsia  17 днів тому +6

      I often wondered about that. After reading your comment, I looked into it, and here is what I found: They actually will reimburse your ATM fees.

      I have been traveling in 11 countries in the last 5 years. I only take money from the bank atms with my Charles schwab card. Never had a problem with Schwab. Always was reimbursed for the fees. Even when they were really high. Even had a new card fed exed to me over seas.
