Its the same thing with working out, and training. You better do as much now as possible because later when your having to run 5 miles with someone on your back, put them down every 300 feet to engage the enemy your going to want to have eaten that extra bite of pasta, one more rep, or run that extra mile in training when there wasn’t risk of death.
Hardest part for me was keeping that mindset for long periods of time. Eventually everything just gets monotonous and its hard to pretend that you're saving lives 7 days a week. I'd always fall apart around the 1 1/2 month- 2 month period.
Completely agree. I did 1 tour in Iraq and 1 in Afghanistan, both part of an Army transport company. My orthopedic surgeon said that I needed to get down to 275 pounds to be approved for my first of two surgeries. I hit that goal today! But I can improve my diet, cut back on the caffeine and quit vaping. I cannot walk unassisted. So I use a wheeled walker. I went over 2.5 miles today. It is grueling, especially on trails. It took me an hour. I want to improve my time and distance before my first surgery. So I am going to incorporate low impact calisthenics. It's back to bootcamp, but gimp bootcamp. Once you become a fat burner instead of a glucose burner, it doesn't matter if I don't eat for a day or two. No cravings, no hunger pangs. There is a reason the Huns were some of the best warriors that ever walked the earth, creating one of the biggest empires in history. They mostly ate horse meat. You can carry waaayyy more calories in the form of fat than in the form of glucose. Glucose deposits have to constantly be replenished (hence why so many people snack) But the mitochondria have to be trained to become fat (ketone) burning instead of glucose. For some that grew up on junk this can take months. But the benefits are clear: latest research shows that most of the modern chronic diseases are a result of constantly elevated insulin levels. Eliminate the insulin spikes (by going low/no carb) and you not only stay healthy but have an abundance of energy as well. I wish I had known this when I was an active military member.
@Alexander Bajo I don't remember, I took it from a picture of a Russian soldier I looked up in like 6th grade. It's been on there since this UA-cam account was created
I am impressed about how scientific you guys are these days. The hiking sites all talk about carb and protein loading too. All this about falling off of a caffeine and sugar rush. In Vietnam on patrol in serious mountain forest I took a can of tuna fish a day which I shared with my counterparts for a bowl of rice. I don’t recall getting weak because the normal beer available at district hq was no longer available. Big strong guys couldn’t make it in the heat and humidity; you wanted small lean guys. And we kept the weight down.
I am a citizen that just wants to live a long healthy life and be useful for my community. These videos are incredibly helpful to know what the real deal type standards are.
Cant believe I’m saying this but i miss waking up at 0300 and having a cigarette for breakfast then going on a 8k movement wearing full kit in the mountains of Yakima. Nicotine got me through a lot of stupid shit

Your videos are amazing. Thanks for all your hard work and effort putting them together. Recently my son tried to enlist in the Canadian National Armed Forces ( army branch). Even though my son is in amazing physical shape and would have been able to pass basic training no problem they would not accept him. The problem is he failed the aptitude test given before you even sign the 3 year contract. My son is not that great in math and spacial concepts so that is the part he did not do well on. It's a shame because the army would have been absolutely amazing for him. He is only 19 and needs direction in his life. The army would have straightened him right out. The army said that he can come back in a year from now and rewrite the aplitude test. I really hope that he passes the opportune test next time he takes it, the army is exactly what he needs..
Thank you for your continued service of gifting us with your knowledge and experience. It is as if you were personally creating content loaded with pearls of wisdom to a relative of yours going into training. As someone whose son is about to go to Ranger School I am grateful that he will at least have the best advice available to be successful.
I subscribed because this was such a realistic view on food as energy. There’s times to eat big, time to eat small, and times to just eat anything and everything you can get your hands on. I am currently underway preparing for law enforcement academy, and this was very helpful. Do you have any/could you make a video on preparing for academy/military training?
You gotta know your body and it’s needs. For me when I was in the food the chow hall served was great. For the first year I was in the Army I did not smoke or drink alcohol. My PT score were never great but average. What I did excel in was endurance. Some guys scored the infamous 300 in the pt tests but could not keep up mentally or physically in forced marches or long field training. I took every experience to adjust or tweak myself for the next event.
I can just hear “everyone grab 2 MREs for each day we’re going out” and the feeling of not knowing where I’m supposed to fit 8 MRE’s with all my gear, ratf*ing them as good as I can, and still contemplating ditching them and just bringing a bag of jerky to last me 4 days instead 😂
To the point, and well explained. To pinch from my own experience, give the keto diet some attention to see what's in it for you, especially when carbo-loading does not work out for you.
more years ago than I care to think about when, operating as a member (and later leader) of reccon patrols in SE Asia we ate native food and no smoking was the rule. After several days out you stunk just like you were part of the background. That often meant survival
Just got your books and started getting ready to enlist, this video came out just in time. Hoping to enlist as 18x as soon as I get back to fighting weight.
Great video with a lot of good, common sense advice. One thing I would say though, this applies to ALL training, exercises and deployments - not specifically SF. I ate like a horse when I was doing my commissioning course and still lost nearly 20lbs in only two weeks because we were on the go for 18 hours a day, every day.
Yes...one thing I've been doing for years...stashing food in my car...my bags...mini little caches everywhere so if for whatever reason I can't get food from a shop I always have access to it...you never know when you might need it... always be prepared for the unexpected....
I love your videos!! I'm not military but I think your videos are great because you know the best way to connect life in the military to normal day to day life. Keep up the great content!!!
i drank monster energy for so long my heart hurts and has irregular beating patterns when i do cardio or hard workouts. anyone training for something like this, make sure you dont drink monster or any energy drinks, that shit is so bad for you long term.
I found this video extremely helpful! I have been called to duty service and will be leaving in two weeks. After watching the video, I have decided to halt my sugar consumption and eliminate this unhealthy habit. Thank you so much!
I am not in the military and never have been. Though I do know that the training and hardships you all endure is much more intense than anything I will ever have to endure. Thank you for being part of the initiative that has allowed me that. I do spend a lot of time at the gym and in the outdoors. So I enjoy watching your vids and learning about fitness. Would you recommend Musclepharm Combat Protein Powder?
Hey man great video, I was never in any kind of special forces or elite units except for the 101st Airborne but I was a Combat Engineer light and Mechanized and I cant tell you how many times I have seen dudes burn out or get seriously hurt within the first 24 hours of a 72 hour defense, we put in obstacles day and night getting maybe 15 to 30 minutes of sleep (if your light you can forget that) traveling from one objective to another and when you are not doing your primary job you are a heavy infantry squad for your Infantry battalion that you support. I know a lot dudes out there will say they understand but when you pound pickets 3 x 300 meter triple strand put in a couple minefields and many other things while doing infantry work and carrying around all the shit you need to do its a bit different. Stay healthy, eat when you can, and keep awake; slinging around heavy and dangerous shit , and playing with Demo is deadly mix.
This is excellent advice that can be adapted for normal life: If you are training hard, and exercising hard, eat a training diet. If you are sitting around on your arse, playing xbox and taking it easy, eat salad. I swear that half of my extra pounds were the result of eating my "healthy" weight training diet, whilst not doing the damn training.
You should consider doing a video on the Navy TIO program. There isn't a whole lot of information on them, and I'm wondering if the training is as strenuous as it is for other Special Operators.
Good video!👍 Best meal in my country: -Sarmale cu mămăligă! -Ciorba de burtă! -Mici cu muștar! - Shaorma! Lot's of protein and energy.... Use Google translate or Google photo, If it was "Google taste" i will recomend, but not exist...maybe in one day...
Another random thing to add to always be ready by eating when you can for maintaining energy. Also safety shits. Poop or pee when you can so you dont have to in a bad situation.
I've noticed that whole grains and "coarse" bread (the kind we have in Norway) tend to last longer. I always eat this with meats, cheese and fat milk before do anything that needs endurance. But then I'm no elite soldier, lol!
@@AntiKiwieCS Yeah man, I noticed this when I was in my early 20's. We've got a lot of frozen pizza on the market here in Norway, and I'd notice that even if I got full, I'd still feel tired and get a head ache after having a pizza. It's really tasty, of course, but it doesn't last at all, so I stopped, and focused on making delicious and high-protein casseroles for dinner instead, with meat and beans and so on.
In some time ready to join the recruitment of special operations in my country (Czechia). Soon finishing school and ready. Have to be in peek physical shape. The requirements for joining special operations as in, physical tests and physical performance is very intimidating. And we are talking just making it in because the moment you start your boot camp shit really hits the fan. From your classic ruck marches completely sleep deprived to lack of nutrition at times and team management. Will be the hardest time of my life as this is the hardest and most gruesome that my country has to offer but am motivated and ready to go! Wish me luck, thanks for all the advice about spec ops, very helpful.
Get a little fat but still not be slow. Research good boots and buy "darn tough" socks. It sounds crazy, but Darn Tough socks are incredible for boots and field training. Break in the boots so you don't get blisters. Good luck.
Im not military but really enjoy this video as its somethingnive been perfexting in my own life. I am tall and was skinny, but after changing my diet i am a perfect middle ground and adapt easily to the seasons. The main change i made was high protein all the time, eating every 3 hours to maximize muscle recovery and also not enter ketosis. One of the reasons i stated out of the military is the quality of food, as i am an organic farmer and have made my food quality my lifestyle, because it plays a huge role as far as allotment of nutrients per pound of food, but i assume there are not a lot of local organic options in military chow halls
🤣. I agree 🤣👍🤙 greetings from Italy. And, yes we like to delivery food as exercise for special operations. (we have a secret contract to do food delivery in war times) 🤣. C u and keep us safe 👌
Nah, there's is a big difference between what Starbucks makes and coffee. Nothing wrong with a good coffee. Just don't use it like you're replacing one drug for another.
I, John Rodriguez, both now , as a Veteran, and back then on Active Federal Military Service ( AFMS) in both the Marine Corps and Army, from 1987 to 1998, did not and sadly, do not always eat and drink healthy. But ,as a 53 Year Old Prior Service USMC and US Army Veteran, Widower, and Grandfather, as well as a Commercial Landscaper, I AM going ,as now, to eat the 4 Food Groups, such as Meats, Fruits and Vegetables, Dairy, and Grains. Whether here in Tucson, Arizona, it is Too Damned Hot,or ,Too Damned Cold, I need the nutrients that good wholesome food and beverage provide. This is a good video. Thank You, Lieutenant Colonel Littlefield, Sir.
That's not healthy, the "food groups" is a bunch of government enforced bullshit. Sugar from fruit and carbs from grains are not the right choice for health ever, without bringing up all the trash inside milk and other processed dairy products.
Very good video for just a normal human. Eat good eat healthy so u can give it everything that u are about to be doing, no any stupid "diets" Eat like a Warrior
My NCOs have literally sat me down and told me I need to change how I eat im a 130 crew chief I use to eat 2 bags of sour gummy worms and drink a can of Arizona energy almost 3 nights a week for lunch on mid shift You cant tell tho 😂
The one about eating before the mission is really sound advice! I would also add always have a quick energy source available (if training or circumstances allow) like cliff bar or cereal bar, something quick n easy in a pocket that can be eaten on the move or in a hurry. I'd also say learn what foods are more likely to give you bowel trouble. If I know I may be in for a long haul and may not have the luxury of popping a squat for a long time, I will avoid pork or stuff smothered in bbq sauce.
I had some opposite problems when going to the field. I'd usually eat quite healthy normally and then we go to the field and survive off MREs which are packed with preservatives and crap and have a bunch of sugary stuff and I'd have a week long headache from the fact that my body had to deal with me eating so much worse suddenly :/
I haven't watched the whole video yet , but somehow your voice and videos sound convincing. I watch them from time to time and really appreciate your effort. Thank you.

Doc says, "Remember Devil, brown rice and quinoa are your friends. You have the calories and carbs to stack those bodies, and the hippies will hate you for it.....Rah?"
Absolute information. There should be no debate over what you said. I was in Benning for boot and rushed through the dinning hall you ate as you walked to the exit door. This didn't last the entire time but eating was rushed or eliminated as desired by superiors. I saw one kid being harassed for not eating everything on his plate and was force fed until he chocked and puked, it happens. That particular instructor was often drunk in the field and kicked the shit out of people but ... I'd get in a foxhole anytime with that guy over someone never having been in combat. It's the military, not boy scout camp. If you joined as infantry, airborne, ranger S.F., your basic will differ from a computer nerd. I've seen a green beret throw a drill instructor to the ground in a puddle of his copenhagen spit, spun around wiping it up and stood back up so fast I couldn't record it with my own sight. The guy was coming back in and had to be processed at Jackson, the obviously non-combat drill, screwed with the wrong guy and there was nothing he could do about it as he screamed in the drill satinets office and could be heard outside I smiled inside laughing.
I saw in a Coast Guard documentary they shave there face several times a day. I'm not making fun of them; you shouldn't do things like that it would probably damage your skin-especially if it is sensitive.
Detective Yapper24 I’ll put it this way, I’m active duty assigned to a CG MSST, sometimes I do cool shit and some times I’m bored out of my fucking mind. And as far as “opinion”. My father in law is a Green Beret assigned to 19th Special Forces Group, I get ZERO cool guy points at Christmas dinner LMAO. If you want to do Law Enforcement and transition into another Fed, state or local LE job than go CG and get your degree while in. If you want to do cool shit, fight for your country and push your body to its limits then go spec ops or SF in a DOD service. USCG is DHS....
They have an important job that's completely seperate from the standard military operations. Easily the least badass in the military, but they are one of the most heroic law enforcement agencies. Depends on what you prefer and if it's based on overall jobs or in the military.

@Alexander Bajo I don't remember, I took it from a picture of a Russian soldier I looked up in like 6th grade. It's been on there since this UA-cam account was created
Nikolai Vutasherkov I thought it was Mussolini 😂 lol
@Alexander Bajo do you remember which video? It was probably me, I've had this picture on here since like 2009-2010
I am impressed about how scientific you guys are these days. And we kept the weight down.
its simple science thought, bigger body = bigger maintaince

Cant believe I’m saying this but i miss waking up at 0300 and having a cigarette for breakfast then going on a 8k movement wearing full kit in the mountains of Yakima. Nicotine got me through a lot of stupid shit
Were you SF? Coming from just a recreational athlete with no connection or knowledge of American Military
As a civ who has no military experience this is really interesting man. Cheers and thanks to all you actives, reserves, and vets.
1st off MY MAN ! selection, ranger, and scuba schools .You are that dude ! Don't let anyone tell you different! 2nd thank you very informative I gained a lot from the info you provided.I've only been to airborne, and air-assault. But I feel confident that if I use what you taught I will have no problems .
100% right about SERE school, be a fatty! I showed up 160lbs, left 3 weeks later, 145lbs.
Fr I lost 10lb the first week of sere selection alone , shit was ass (but fun )
Correction: Nick Bare was an Army Infantry Officer who went to Ranger school. That does not make you a Ranger, only qualified.
Preach to the choir buddy. You think he doesn’t know that?
@@benderrodriguez5428 Well, if he does know that then why did he call him a Ranger?
Minnesota Guy he could have been to ranger regiment but that wouldn’t have much to do with the topic of schools so he could’ve left it out
@@professorhanzsolo3422 Nick said he was an infantry officer that went to ranger school for the tab. Watch his videos and youll know.
Minnesota Guy since I went to Ranger school I disagree with you. When you make it through the program then you can tell me who’s a Ranger and who’s not. RLTW
How's he doing now?
We would like to know please
Thank you for your continued service of gifting us with your knowledge and experience. It is as if you were personally creating content loaded with pearls of wisdom to a relative of yours going into training. As someone whose son is about to go to Ranger School I am grateful that he will at least have the best advice available to be successful.
Man! I am just an AIR FORCE SF AIRMAN ( POLICE) . AND YOUR ADVISE ALL WORK FOR ME SIR. THANK YOU.
Food is fuel for the 🔥 fight. Point Blank and.
"he was a military intelligence national guardsman"
Ooooof that hit me right in the career choice
You gotta know your body and it’s needs. For me when I was in the food the chow hall served was great. For the first year I was in the Army I did not smoke or drink alcohol. My PT score were never great but average. What I did excel in was endurance. Some guys scored the infamous 300 in the pt tests but could not keep up mentally or physically in forced marches or long field training. I took every experience to adjust or tweak myself for the next event.
i have no idea why i got this in my recommended but I'm enjoying learning this.
Those field trainings :D
I was eating 5000kcal and still losing weight. Light inf. here.
As a 26 year vet with 19 years in SF, I can tell you first hand cheese wiz, slim jims will get you thru alot.
would you say it’s true to not worry about what your eating before because the food they give you isn’t good anyways?

To the point, and well explained. To pinch from my own experience, give the keto diet some attention to see what's in it for you, especially when carbo-loading does not work out for you.
Keto only works for fat people that have never heard of portion control

more years ago than I care to think about when, operating as a member (and later leader) of reccon patrols in SE Asia we ate native food and no smoking was the rule. After several days out you stunk just like you were part of the background. That often meant survival

Thanks for your service.
A salad seems so counter intuitive.

I love your videos!! I'm not military but I think your videos are great because you know the best way to connect life in the military to normal day to day life. Keep up the great content!!!
i work night shift in a call center; thank you for giving me life tips for my special force operations
i drank monster energy for so long my heart hurts and has irregular beating patterns when i do cardio or hard workouts. anyone training for something like this, make sure you dont drink monster or any energy drinks, that shit is so bad for you long term.
sugar free Rip Its from the Dollar Tree are good.
I didn't realize that my headaches were due to sugar crashes.. gotta stop drinking those 3in1s. Thanks Operator.
Advice some of us wish we had decades ago. Well done.
USMC grunts,Ranger Battalion, those dudes are seriously lean and fit!

White bread has very very few nutrients and packed with sugar.
Got 18x last week. Boutta get after it. Good luck bros.
Get a little fat but still not be slow. Research good boots and buy "darn tough" socks. It sounds crazy, but Darn Tough socks are incredible for boots and field training. Break in the boots so you don't get blisters. Good luck.
Eat like your lazy and fat but train like your in special operations. You’ll gain weight but still in be in strong enough shape to go through training
Hmmmm that whole first minute tells me you’re definitely from California
🤣. I agree 🤣👍🤙 greetings from Italy. And, yes we like to delivery food as exercise for special operations. (we have a secret contract to do food delivery in war times) 🤣. C u and keep us safe 👌

The advice that weening yourself off of bad habits for two weeks is gospel.
A Starbucks frappe every night? The faux machos at Blackrifle Coffee just had an aneurysm.

Nah, there's is a big difference between what Starbucks makes and coffee. Nothing wrong with a good coffee. Just don't use it like you're replacing one drug for another.
576575s doesn’t change that they’re coffee isn’t any better than that instant packet coffee they out in MREs
Haha.imagine such loads..
Great info, my missions are a P90X routine, dirt biking and selling real estate but I can pretend its SOT
Very good video for just a normal human. Eat good eat healthy so u can give it everything that u are about to be doing, no any stupid "diets" Eat like a Warrior
My NCOs have literally sat me down and told me I need to change how I eat im a 130 crew chief I use to eat 2 bags of sour gummy worms and drink a can of Arizona energy almost 3 nights a week for lunch on mid shift
You cant tell tho 😂
The one about eating before the mission is really sound advice! I would also add always have a quick energy source available (if training or circumstances allow) like cliff bar or cereal bar, something quick n easy in a pocket that can be eaten on the move or in a hurry. I'd also say learn what foods are more likely to give you bowel trouble. If I know I may be in for a long haul and may not have the luxury of popping a squat for a long time, I will avoid pork or stuff smothered in bbq sauce.
Looking at lots of info for the army lately on your channel. I just turned 20 recently and thinking about joining. Thanks for all the in depth videos.
Did you join?
its more interesting then thousands of tactical sof vids on yt. this is what you really need
Thank you.
I watched a few tarkov videos then I'm recommended this haha
Thanks a ton for these videos my man, they’re great

You and Terrence Popp need to do a video together. Both of you are doing UA-cam videos and ex SF Military.
I love Terrence Popp. Damn good advice 👍
Prob the most unique military video ive ever seen. Food is rarely talked about.
Solid video as always. I think for a lot of us, waning off of pre-workout is going to be a difficult endeavor.

Love the video keep it up.
But I do have one question what's your opinion on the Coast Guard
Uncle Sam's canoe club!
Puddle jumpers. 😉
