Thanks for the lesson! After watching the George R Gibson video here a couple of times, I was hoping there'd be a lesson to get that tuning. In the Gibson video, my mind went right to Dink Roberts, that 4-5 deal he does on Coo Coo that gives it such a moody feel. Seeing Mr Gibson play this song with whatever that kind of eerie 1/2 step thing just lit my mind on fire! I'll calm down eventually, but man your channel is unbelievable.
Like on "Same Old Man At The Mill" from Fred Price twisting those major notes into a minor dorian melody line just brings out the spice of the song .. Really natural thing to use a frettless and use those inbetween twisted notes .. LOve this Clifton ..So glad you are putting George out in the world all your can ... And I bet George and you do it a little different each time anyway ... just like the weather hits ... Yours Guy
One of my favorite old traditional folk songs. Excellent interpretation and lesson. How are you able to tune your banjo down that far and still stay in tune and sound great? Heavier gauge strings maybe?
Thank you, I read somewhere that medium gauge red Aquila Nylgut strings are specifically designed for lower tunings on banjo. In fact if you try to tune to open G they will probably break. Not sure if any modifications need to be made on the banjo to use them. Seems worth checking out. There about $12 on e b a y

I have tried slowing the video and trying to see what strings vibrate but i can NOT quite tell what order u are doing the right hand background roll thingy. It seems like 2,1,5,1 ? But your fingers and thumb are SOO FAST😫😃 any way you can clear up the roll u do as u are hitting the melody notes😯😯😯❤❤❤

Trying this on my guitar, I'm too cheap to tune strings up to EAEAAE, so first tried DGDGGD, not the correct intervals, but fascinating sound, now on to CGCGGC, correct intervals and original notes for the song, but the strings are all mixed up. If you’re talking about Merle Travis he got his picking style from a guy named Arnold Shultz who also mentored Bill Monroe
This picking style is a lot different from Travis picking.

I just use medium gauge strings. They do feel considerably looser down this low but I am used to it I guess.

I think it's 1(finger) 2(thumb) 1(finger) 5(thumb). I use the same pattern in Pretty Polly.

Reminds me of Indian music. The only other Indian sounding songs I've ever listen to were by George Harrison.

You did it right. Old timers around eastern Kentucky sometimes called gCGCC "Darling Cora Tuning" or occasionally "Dulcimer Tuning."

So the tuning is basically double C but tuned down ?
I'm in "triple C" gCGCC tuned down. It's not necessary to downtune, however, unless you have trouble singing at the modern standard pitch.
