Do you know who the biggest enemy of these smallest antelope species is, which inhabit the densely vegetated bushes of East and Southwest Africa? It's none other than humans. People don’t like dikdiks because the alarming sounds they make warn other animals of approaching danger. The locals even derived their name from this sound-it sounded like "dik dik" to them. Besides that, their bones are used to make traditional jewelry for various ethnic groups, and their skins are used to produce gloves.
Dikdiks grow to about knee height for a human and weigh no more than six to eight kilograms. Due to their small size, they are easy prey for predators, so they spend most of their lives in grassy areas. However, their large eyes help them stay alert, which comes in handy during their morning and dusk activities. They have very similar adaptations to dry conditions as oryxes and addaxes-highly concentrated urine and dry feces, completely devoid of water. In fact, they can survive without drinking water for a month or two, obtaining moisture from the plants, tubers, grass, and leaves they consume. There's something else interesting about them-they are territorial. First, the female marks her territory with her droppings and urine, and then the male re-marks the area. He also marks it with secretions from his supraorbital gland located below his eye, as if "shedding tears" to claim his home.
Although dikdik Kirk, the largest of the dikdiks, is not currently classified as a critically endangered species, its population in the wild, like many other antelopes, is gradually declining.
