Well, it has three guitar parts. After the slow sax solo (into the fast feel sax solo), there is some clean funk strumming guitar. It then drops back when the vox come back in, but then starts again right after "alive alive alive". And the last eBow parts are different on the outro than the other choruses. But otherwise, thanks for the time and effort! We all appreciate it out here in UA-cam land.
I was just coming down to mention this. The part under the "a-tempo" part of the Sax solo, is basically a D-shape G4|B5|E4 (with occasional G4|B4|E4 hits for flavor) then G9|B10|E9 (with occasional slides up from G8|B9|E8). You also need to put that third string back on, because (along with the G-string sounding occasionally, during the funk) the part ends with a sustained three-note chord (D-shape at the 4th fret D4|B5|E4).
I've played guitar and bass since I was ten. The syncopated bass line really isn't that hard but it is genius. Believe it or not, John Taylor has a YT channel and gives free lessons including Rio, of which he breaks down section by section. So I thought I'd now learn the guitar part. I have a good ear but going to a YT guy like this is just quicker. Lol And yes, none of the Taylors in DD were related. This guy should have known.
You are AWESOME! I love Duran Duran and I love your video series so for me, this video is awesome. Just a minor correction, none of the Taylors in Duran Duran are related.
Man, if you could do a lesson on that one, it'd be great. I've pretty much got the whole thing except for the pre-chorus and then there's this little sort of solo part I can't seem to get. Another good Duran guitar song is Anyone Out There? Take care!
Ok, licks 1 and 2 during the chorus sound the same to me... Thanks for this - the guitar is much easier than I though. I've already learned the bassline... :-)
YourGuitarSage I understand. I was wondering where do you get the music sheet you read from. I thought you have more reliable material than that website. I will try to find it there :))))) thank you for your never ending patience :)))
No, I believe you are correct. Lots of comments in the thread that point to that. Contrary to popular belief, I do not complete a thorough genealogy of bandmembers before doing these videos.😜
Thank you for the lesson! Duran Duran's Rio is one of the coolest albums of all time.
I need to get me one of those guitar playing staplers.
pepto abysmal lmao
Honestly wtf is that
It's like this magnetic thing that vibrates the strings.
😂😂😂

Brilliant lesson! Had no idea how Andy Taylor made the guitar sing like that all these years! Thanks for teaching me how to do it using a PICK!
You're so welcome. I did not either until I really gave it a solid listen.

This was awesome ! Thanks for sharing. Greetings from Colombia, South America.
There's actually a treasure trove of great licks in pop songs.
man I love Duran Duran, awesome song awesome lesson, thanks Eric
Thank you for being kind and generous!
So simple once you see it, yet so cool! Great posting, thanks!
Awesome! You're welcome!
Came back here to learn the ebow part. Wow! Great job and nice bends Also, smooth switch to the ebow in real time. Cool
Thank you, Billy. Love this tune.
Gotta get an electric guitar! That EBOW is cool! Thanx, Erich!
In the Wayback Machine! Nice!
Thanks so much 🤟
No problem 👍😀
Thanks for this video lesson. I love Duran and Rio is both my favourite DD song and album :-) Cool tip with the E-bow.
Thanks
Do you do requests ?
cool E-Bow!
just learnt the bass part lastnight, it's not as hard as it sounds..just good syncopated finger technique
GREAT bass line!
A lot of Andy Taylor's Duran riffs are easy to play, but compliment the songs really well. Nice lesson. Know Girls on Film by any chance?
Great point, I totally agree. I do know that song, it's a good one.

What version of the song with this? Did you hav it playing into another mic? Sounded like a lot of reverb
Same version minus guitars.
1:30 - Duran Duran had 3 members with the surname of "Taylor", but none of them were related.
That's wack! 👍
Great lesson! I don't think he uses an e-bow though, it sounds like guitar through a Big Muff on the record.
Could be.

John Taylor has a YT channel and he teaches Rio on it. Lol
sweet
👍
Hey Erich, Is it too demanding to have the tabs of what you teach?
Yes, tabs are very tedious. I would not be able to make nearly as many vids. www.ultimate-guitar.com is a great source for tabs however
YourGuitarSage I understand. I was wondering where do you get the music sheet you read from. I thought you have more reliable material than that website. I will try to find it there :))))) thank you for your never ending patience :)))
You are most welcome Antonio! Thanks for watching and commenting!
where can I get a evo
right here in my store, my friend. Just scroll down a little once you get there. kit.co/YourGuitarSage/gadgets-and-gizmos
I believe I have seen the guitarist play the top three strings during the verse. Anyway, I do the same and it sounds fantastic.
👍
Thank you - "the Lazy Cover Band Guitarist"
SageBow!!!
Except Andy didn't use an Ebow on the song Rio... In the isolated guitar track one can hear the picked notes on that part.
The advert before this video was telling me that it's impossible to learn guitar via UA-cam. I beg to differ.
Thanks for the lesson as always.
The Taylor's aren't brothers
gareth bruce really?! Always thought they were.
Yeah I thought that too until I saw a documentary about them.great lesson though and I'm loving the 80's gems you've been covering lately
nobody cares if they're brothers unless they have a tampon in their pants
three Taylors in Duran Duran, I don' think they are related. but then again, I could be wrong.
No, I believe you are correct. Lots of comments in the thread that point to that. Contrary to popular belief, I do not complete a thorough genealogy of bandmembers before doing these videos.😜
Has anyone ever started off playing bass then went to guitar?
Been playing both since I was ten.
John Taylor has a YT channel and he teaches Rio on it. Lol
Neither of the Taylors are related to each other let alone them being brothers
Supert
Taylor brothers? None of them are related
I wish I had talent, ugh!
You don’t need any, my friend. I don’t have any. I just practice.
Thanks for that, that’s actually encouraging:)
The Taylors aren’t related
Yeah, I heard that after I recorded this. 👍
