If you formally delay their school start a year they do still go into reception, i delayed my son as he is late summer born and so he started in September in reception already being 5. He also had a speech delay and we’re so glad we made that decision! He’s thriving now.
Wow Barney has come along leaps and bounds!! What a clever soldier he is. Seriously though every mum says they should have done more, I say it all the time. Whether you're a working mum or stay at home mum, its always hard to juggle the many tasks we have to deal with on a daily basis. You're doing a fab job by him!! Fab vlog as always, and can't wait to see what's coming over at more magic club ✨️
My son, Tommy, is also going to be the youngest. He's 3 on the 29th August. He's also got a slight speech delay but hes currently not going to any therapy. Tommy's going to go to nursery for half a week as I also feel the same about flinging him straight into school full time.
@@SophieandDave oh my gosh….you’re terrific Mom Soph ❤ I have a 7yr old who had great receptive language, but struggled with expressive….he is doing so well now, and little Barney has come so far and will continue to fly with the love from you and Dave. Don’t ever let anyone make you feel differently ever (especially yourself) ❤!!! 😊xo Theresa
My son has speech delay, similar to barney. Since turning 3 and being in preschool he has come on so much. Hes now in reception at school and they have picked up the delay and are now supporting him in what he's struggling with, giving him extra support outside of the class at time. I think if you put him nursery once he gets his 30 hrs in September you may notice he really comes on. We found our son didn't need to talk because we knew what he needed and wanted. My daughter who is the same age as barney is the complete opposite and blows my mind with her speech everyday. Boys sometimes focus on diff things, like climbing - my son is a brilliant climber..whereas my daughter never even attempted it! You are doing amazing, motherhood isn't meant to be easy. But barney looks happy and loved and that's what is important xx
Zoo! Haven’t commented in a long while but wanted to say, Barney is so stinkin adorable! The eating chocolate in bed hade me laughing. The end with the hatched egg as well 😂 Hope you guys are able to find the time to post more weekly vlogs. ❤ I’ve missed seeing you guys show me around life in England - one of the reasons I started following (my dream destination). Best of luck on everything!
Sophie and Dave you’re doing an awesome job ! Relax in the knowledge that Barneys getting all the help he needs ,,, you’ll see he will be quite the chatterbox when he starts school 🥰Enjoy the now and tomorrow will work itself out 💝
I’ve had these feelings about our little man too! He will be three in June and it feels so young for him to be going to school next September. He also has a speech delay but sadly the services where we live are so busy he’s not been deemed at immediate need. He only has 10-20 words he says consistently but really try’s to talk… it just all sounds like Chinese to us though! The mum guilt is real… but I’m sure they will all catch up in the end and if not.. we cross that road when we come to it. Sending all the mama strength your way ❤❤❤
You're doing great Soph don't you worry yourself with Barney's speech. Our nephew started school last September with very few words. School has been great for his vocabulary and speech development but it hasn't hindered his learning or enjoyment at all ❤ you got this!
We’re members at Chester Zoo also . It’s great because there is no pressure to stay all day especially with a toddler . Sometimes we can go for an hour have our packed lunch and come home . It’s definitely worth it and such a lovely Zoo.
Zoo!! Lovely to see you back !! & wow Barney is growing up so much 🥰 you should be so proud of him for how far he has come with his speech 😌 always remember he’s on his own journey & will get there when he’s ready 🫶🏻
Barney is and will always be your priority and you shouldn’t worry about that…. Everything else will just work itself out…. Great to see you guys & Cholmondeley looked lovely! xx Forgot to put ‘zoo’ 😂 xx
Barney’s speech is coming along in leaps and bounds, he really is a cutie and so clever! Chip you are very cute too 💙 Thank you for your vlog, it’s always great to see you all, take care 😊
We've all been to the zoo, zoo, zoo how about you? Lovely vlog. Barney's coming along so well. What a lovely family you are. Loved how Barney chucked the rabbit back in the vase! Lots of love to you all ❤

Teaching Assistant and Mum to a summer-baby here (well she’s nearly 17 now). My daughter did half days until lunchtime when she first started Reception. After the Christmas break she was then full-time at school. This was before I worked in as school myself, and I worried at the time that she’d be behind on her learning, but like you say it’s mainly learning through play, and Phonics sessions are in the morning so she didn’t miss out on those. Well done to you & Barney - his speech is coming along brilliantly! x
Zoo! Im in the same boat with speech,my little boy doesnt have any words yet and turns 2 in July. Youre not on your own in this journey and Barney is doing amazing. You're both doing an incredible job ❤
Hi Sophie and Dave. I am not a mum but I'm on the Autism Spectrum. For me talking was a breeze and I was a chatterbox very early. But it took me up to age 2 to sit, age 3 to walk and I was fully potty trained at age 5 and I was able to ride a bike without training weels at age 7. The biggest cause for me was anxiety. Autistic, anxiety or not, sometimes children will learn a bit slower then others and that's okay but I wish society would allow that and give children more patience and time. I'm sure with all the love you are giving him and patience he will get there! I believe in you guys and little Barney!
Zoo , my son was born in July and was one of the youngest in his class, he was totally fine and has always kept up with all the other children, Barney will be a little chatterbox before you know it x
If you officially defer with admissions Barney will be in the year below and start reception in 2025. But the thing you were talking about is you don’t become statutory school age till the term after you are 5, which means he doesn’t legally have to be at school until September 2025 and would start with his current cohort. Hope that makes sense!! It’s completely patent preference so don’t let anyone sway your own decision. 😊
I am a SENDCo in a primary school and I just wanted to let you know that in our local authority (Wiltshire) if you delay school entry, you can start in Reception the following year and I think this is the case nationally. Often parents with summer born children do opt to do this if they feel their child would benefit from an additional year at pre school. There would be no point in offering school deferrals if that meant missing the Reception year. Hope this helps?
UK primary teacher here. Barney's progress is fantastic! But when he is in reception, if you are still unsure about him moving onto year 1, you and the school can decide for him to be held back a year. Hope that's helpful
HIya, my friends toddler had similar speech and he had a few sessions of craniaopathy with the mind that it opens up neural channels and he is like a different child. He just sat on the womans lap and she massaged his head in different places(obvs more technical than that but thats apparently what he experienced) and improved after every time he went 🙂it may be something you would be interested in looking in to xxx
My son was the same, born on 1st august, so had just turned 4 and started school in the September.. He wasn’t ready but to put your mind at rest he really settled in and has made great progress. Even though they are still young children are so adaptable he will be fine. I was the one crying not him 😂🫣 Zoo to you 😃 xx
Zoo! Great to see Barney talking more, very cute 💙 ps - move to Scotland & Barney could go to school later but still start in P1, just have an extra year in nursery.
I'm in the same boat with my son who'll be 3 in August. He can say the alphabet and count to 10 and a an handful of other words but only does it when he wants to. He can't have a conversation or put words together. He's on the waiting list for speech therapy since last Yr. My sisters son just turned 2 and can have a full conversation. I'm trying not to compare my son to another's but its still really hard. I just want the best for him. Every child is different and I'm sure Barney and my Gabriel will be big chatterboxes soon enough
Hi Lucy, thank you so much for sharing. You’ve made me feel less alone too. It’s so hard not to compare but there’s no reason not to believe that our boys will shine in their own time. I sometimes have to remind myself that the reason speech therapy is in such high demand with such long wait lists is because we are part of a larger group of mums all struggling with the same thing too. Feel free to dm me on Instagram if you ever need to talk 💗
Aww lovely vlog, Barney is chatting so well and making sounds and saying words, he is doing awesome and so are you guys ❤ Wow that's zoo looks great, our local one is not as impressive x
My son didn’t talk much for a whole year then after the year he was saying over 50 words so it was like he was storing everything in. It’s a great idea starting school early because at least he will make friends At the beginning rather than a full year later. Zoo
I wouldn't delay, we were in the exact same position and it was the best thing for him. My little boy has verbal dyspraxia, please don't worry about him talking by school. Also speech and language problems aren't your fault, I feel the same but it is not. I'm also a teacher so it's the added pressure of everyone expecting your child will be fluent x
Have you thought about putting Barney into nursery for a couple of hours a week for social skills he may then start picking up with his speech also it’s so good in preparation for reception it really does help take it from a early years educator
Try not to worry about him not having a full vocabulary before starting school, easier said than done I know! I was worried as my daughter is autistic and has very limited speach (one word demands for needs such as drink or hungry) and school are amazing and so helpful. Having 20 words since November is amazing and I'm sure you will start to see some progress but please don't worry if you don't.....he will get on fine xxx
Doesn’t Barney go to nursery, my little girl’s speech improved so much once she went, I’m sure he would love being with all the other little children, I found my daughter copied the other children and she was saying so many different words, I’m sure children all develop at different stages and he’s doing great xx
Chester zoo looks great, my favourite is Longleat safari Park In the United Kingdom which has koala bears and a massive safari to drive around its the best, Chester zoo does look amazing though.
I am with Barney…. That bunny goes back in the vase 😵🥴. Hang in there Sophie. Babies are born and instantly Mums acquire guilt and worry that they are doing the right thing. You and Dave are great parents.
I really need to delve deeper to see if there may be any allowances made for children with speech delays if we don’t see enough of an improvement in the next year. But the gov website states they have to join back in year 1 if they stay back a year 😞
8:53… no just no. He is how he is. You did everything timely to notice and address it. Just keep going. However it turns out will be alright in the end.
