How has inner experience radically emerged from cosmic dust? How has our vibrant private awareness developed in what seems to be a wholly physical universe? Is consciousness only an accident of biology? Or does consciousness have deeper meaning? We best be careful not to come to final conclusions based on early science.

Consciousness is not solely a human possession. The next time you try to swat a fly, you see consciousness in another being when it tries to escape your attack. Consciousness is as simple as hunger, yet it is the power that keeps the Universe from collapse. It is "Dark Matter." Hubris makes human consciousness something special.

That doesn’t work though. We can program drones to sense their environment and evade objects and we don’t think they are conscious. So behaviour like that can’t be sufficient evidence.

If you want to explain consciousness, you ought to explain what makes an agent pick a rather than b, what individuate a single agent as a protagonist of its mental life, what's behind properties of mental qualities, how does an agent decide to go to a walk etc.
Most of philosophers try to pick out the agent, while what constitutes agent is deeper and overlooked.

If it were possible to simulate the situation that we turned off all neurotransmitters in the brain.
With only electrical activity remaining between neurons.
What would brain functionality be like then?
Will consciousness remain the same in principle?
    What changes have occurred?
This could give a lot of food for thought.

We, as humans, find ourselves positioned in a balanced commonly fathomable interpretation of “time.” This allows us, due to our mortality, to partition or endow the passage of time with lengths in general proportion to that lifespan by using thought, thus allowing many pretenses that allow a painful and short existence palatable. Thought allows us to endow the universe with meaning and move into an abstraction wherein we may even pretend that the reverse is true were we to so choose. Belief allows us, through this abstraction of thought, to endow the universe with truths of our choosing regardless of veracity. However the discipline of science requires that, to the best of our collective endeavors, proof must be produced to back up any thesis and that proof must be presented for peer review. I think therefore I have the ability to endow meaning where I choose. In a purely evidentiary sense there is, so far at least, absolutely no evidence of the universe operating with intent and thus generating meaning. There is a great deal of evidence that we do both.
As an aside it seems to me that, fascinatingly, this ability to operate in the abstract is bizarre proof that we function outside the laws of physics - or even the universe itself and are in possession of the rarest substance in that universe. Take, for example, “love.” It cannot be seen, measured, weighed or quantified in any way yet we all know that it exists. Compared to the unfathomable mass of the universe neurons are surely an uncommonly rare substance, now take the massless abstractions generated by those neurons and we… humble, tiny, shivering us… are in possession of the most precious stuff in existence. We truly are, as is said in Hindu philosophy, beggars whose bedroll is lined with diamonds yet are unaware of it.
    What’s it all mean…?

*Purposeless things do not exist,* ... so consciousness definitely has a purpose. The purpose of lungs is to infuse blood with oxygen; the purpose of the heart is to pump the blood, and the purpose of blood is to carry oxygen to the brain, and the purpose of the brain is to orchestrate this entire process. Now, all of this can take place without a self-aware consciousness being present, ... _so why is it present?_
Since the brain can handle everything necessary for the survival of the organism, then a self-aware consciousness must be handling _some other duty._ I propose this duty is to organize everything that exists into categories (spectrums) and rank from highest to lowest based on *"value judgments."*
Not only can my self-aware consciousness categorize all of my own body's organs and rank them in order of importance (value), it can also categorize "myself" as an individual within my own species and assess my overall value within this spectrum.
At the highest existential level, consciousness can even render a value judgement for "Existence," itself! ... In other words, my self-aware consciousness can even judge the value of that which facilitated my own existence!

I understand that being a scientist also means being open to new adventures in new realms, and exploring what is unknown to us. Perhaps, besides intelligence and rationality, other senses of consciousness are just waiting to be activated. Perhaps this brave and invigorating interview holds the key to a forgotten door inside our minds. Perhaps this interview can guide us closer to the purpose of our consciences because, as creatures, our ultimate purpose cannot be solely within ourselves; it has to be in serving the creator's purpose. Perhaps our doubts about our purposes will be the last proof of such a condition. Maybe we just need to trust ourselves a little more, making our minds calmer to see what lies on the horizon. Science will never be enough because reality will always surpass science; otherwise, there would be no need for science. Indeed, science is a wonderful excuse to seek the creator while refining many senses and we await a deeper evolution within ourselves. I would like to express my gratitude to you and Mr. Walsh for this opportunity.

    The purpose for understanding consciousness.
The tools for consciousness are the five senses which can be used for relieving bodily stress example you can relieve any pressure on the nervous system due to stress by knowing the body is always sharing information from the left to right and if this goes out of balance it can affect the vision and hearing plus sensitivity and also in certain areas may cause the nervous system to loose control and that can cause swelling anywhere in the nervous system which can go undetected anywhere in the body until an infection show up, my point is you just only have to focus or use beeping pulsating sound waves on the opposite left or right side of the body away from the left or right side from the swelling nerves to balance the left and right to reduce stress and relieve some of the tension from that area which may not show swelling tissue because everything is happening inside the nerves system which can be very confusing to most doctors and may lead into a amputation of limbs because of a misunderstanding of consciousness and what controls it.
This is how I deal with problems concerning consciousness by understanding what holds it together.

The superior consciousness - God, unlike our consciousness, possesses all truth and life within itself, or, more correctly, is Truth and Life itself. And our hungry consciousness aspires ultimately to God - Truth and Life.

I will not profess to know what consciousness is, but all I can say is that I don't think it's purely limited to brain. I have had two experiences throughout my life which have brought me to the conclusion that consciousness is MORE than brain function, and that it can exist at a much "higher" level than we anticipate. I would call this "non-local" consciousness. My own consciousness has been in different locations during periods when I was unconscious and during anaesthesia. So Consciousness is something we will NEVER grasp.

And a combination of inheritance, replication and environmental selection create systems that exhibit intentional behaviour. We even use this principle to engineer systems these days. Alphazero and the latest generation of Large Language Models are not programmed directly by humans with algorithms. Rather they evolve behaviours starting from randomised initial states. Sure, we set the conditions for success, but for the most sophisticated neural network systems we don’t even know how they actually work. So it is with us, we are intentional beings pursuing our evolutionary goals. Intelligence does not have goals itself, it can’t give you reasons to achieve your ultimate goals, but it’s an incredibly good tool at helping us achieve those goals.

@@simonhibbs887 Freud, much like yourself believed the psyche was reducible to motivations or material events from the past. However, Jung and other psychologists since Freud have discovered other forward looking attributes within the unconscious i.e. teleological in nature, arising spontaneously within the unconscious and are easily observable through the production of dreams. So therefore the psyche is both a product of the past but also reaches toward the future - apparently, on occasion, can even foresee the future given the copious amount of scientific evidence for precognition.
There is no current scientific evidence the psyche is derivable or reducible to the brain - just as there is no evidence a broadcast is reducible or derivable from a radio itself. I know I repeat this often, but it appears to be frequently forgotten by those who take the "Materialist" position, assuming there is scientific proof or evidence the brain produces consciousness. When there currently is none. All science currently shows at this time - is correlations of conscious states with brain activity, but as you know, correlation is not causation. There has yet to be any demonstrable scientific evidence showing consciousness can be derived from the chemicals and electricity operating in the brain. Perhaps in the future, this may be the case, but at this time, there is none.
Furthermore, there is growing scientific evidence through Near-Death studies - which again I am reminding you of here Simon - over the last 30+ years, there have been over 65+ worldwide scientific studies some multi-year, of all age groups and ethnicities - of the Near-Death phenomena. And almost all the scientists have concluded from these published studies, that consciousness itself appears to be able to operate when the brain is no longer functioning or could possibly be functioning.
This conclusion by the scientific researchers in NDE by the way coincides with Carl Jung's empirical study of the unconscious - and this is where he and Freud parted ways: Freud insisted the psyche itself was reducible to past events - was a product of the past, where Jung saw many properties within the psyche not derivable from the past. The psyche has a peculiar nature which cannot be reduced to anything else.

Consciousness is the gas in our own tank or money in our own pocket so we're able to make use of all the sensory data directed at us as apparently distinct individuals. We need that sense of feeling like the lights are on in order to responsibly keep active and make use of our context/situations at any given time, and that sense of being responsible and activated and "on" is probably the kind of thing that consciousness would feel like. Now, the question of what does that responsibility entail is a different question. That has to do with clear communication with ourselves and our context

    • @skipsch
      @skipsch 10 місяців тому

We as apparently distinct individuals are born and granted a consciousness aka responsibility to simultaneously act both naturally and like we're independent & separate from our context, so that we avoid missing out on living and thriving and contributing maximally by knowing to make choices that all add up to us being our genuine best selves. Arguably so much has to start with the self. Dissolving ego can be admirable but I believe it's the proactive genuineness in conjuction with the "removal of self" that directly contributes to our context/world most. Unless we're clearly communicating with ourselves and our world we won't be in tune with much and the world won't know how to support us much or lean on us. We won't thrive much. Our minds are not only "our own laboratories" for studying consciousness -- the are the ONLY laboratories we have.
All of the other laboratories are not studying consciousness, but its content.
Consciousness is the "watching", not what is observed.
EDIT: the reason I say "ONLY laboratories" goes to the unique nature of consciousness - it is unobservable, and impossible to verify as existent in any being. We "know" ourselves to be conscious, and assume it about others with no way of proving it.
Current studies in the science of consciousness are limited to studying conscious content because only that can be observed, categorized, and confirmed in a "scientific way".
The only way we have currently to study the "watching" is to do it, and given the above problem (consciousness is unobservable and unverifiable in other beings), we can only do that with our own consciousness.
And that, currently, can only be done through mindfulness and meditation to the point where identification with object, and waking conscious thinking itself, ceases.
Granted, sounds a bit weird (it is...).
    But, I do believe that...
First, consciousness is "explicable" in the physics of our world, just not in physics as it is currently formulated.
    and...
Second, that we will develop a physics that encompasses consciousness, and things will seem less "weird".

      I am conscious.
Consciousness is not a 'something' that I 'have'.
      Conscious is what I am.
      I am the watcher.
      How am I conscious?
I think 'how' can best be explained by first recognizing that my self is a thought.
This thought that I am is no doubt quite complex.
This thought that I am is 'about' my self.
This thought that I am is unique insofar as every other thought is 'about' something else.
When these other thoughts modulate the thought that is my self and
the thought that is my self is in the conscious mode
then these modulations are of what my self is conscious.
And these modulations can ripple through the logic of my synapses
eventually causing my muscles to drive the ball 200 yards straight down the fairway.

    Does Consciousness Have Purpose?
The ultimate purpose of consciousness is to remain as itself as consciousness!!!

  • @TheUltimateSeeds

*"...Does Consciousness Have a Purpose?..."* What an amazingly silly question. Without the existence of consciousness to see, feel, hear, smell, and taste the phenomenal features of reality, then all of reality would be meaningless and have absolutely no reason for existing. Indeed, in the context of the "measurement problem" in quantum mechanics, it is still an unresolved issue as to whether or not reality could even take form were it not for consciousness being somehow involved in wavefunction collapse.

There is no purpose any where. The word "purpose" is man made . But nature in itself looks absolute purposeless .

"It is a great error to assume that the meaning of life is exhausted with the period of youth and growth... The afternoon of life is just as full of meaning as the morning, only its meaning and purpose is a wholly different one." ~CG Jung

I think the modern disconnected family structure is a problem here. My wife is Chinese and in that culture, at least in our family, the older generation live with the younger. My wife's parents spent half their time with us and half in China when our children were younger and continuously for the last 13 years. They've been an integral part of bringing up our children from the start. The modern western system of the nuclear family, and the older generation living alone I think is a big mistake. I'm not sure living together like this would work on my European side of the family though, independent family units is so ingrained in our culture. It's also very common for nuclear families to live very far apart due to patterns of work. My parents have lived a minimum of a 3 hour drive away from me since I got my first job.

@@simonhibbs887 Carl Jung spent some time studying Eastern culture and Eastern philosophy/religion. He wrote the introduction to Richard Wilhelm's well-known translation of the The I Ching (Bollingen Series XIX).
Although I believe Jung would agree with you regarding the much needed necessary connection of youth and age, I don't believe "meaning" for him was restricted only to a family group/entity. Meaning centered more on the Individual's path through life and the goal oriented portions of the psyche reaching toward fulfilling one's individual wholeness or "potential" - which included all the stages of life from youth to old age. Jung felt usually in the first half of life, the psyche was turned outward, more ego centered working to achieve outward success and materialistic ambitions - whereas the second half of life the psyche (in general) turned inward. What is interesting - something Aniela Jaffe pointed out in her book on Apparitions and Precognition (well known psychological phenomena Jung and others have written about ) the unconscious, near the end of people's lives - as often reported and documented in the dreams of many of the elderly - the unconscious produces images of death as a journey implying that - "for the psyche which creates these images - death is not an end nor life after death a nothingness."

    How should one phrase it:
    1. Consciousness touches all things and levels we wish to penetrate
    2. Consciousness is the very means through which all that we may touch upon and penetrate.
    The psycho physical, human experience,
    Or
Acknowledge consciousness as a predicate of God.
Top downism acknowledges the progenitor is always greater than the progeny. If persons want to limit consciousness to the human that's fine, God is most certainly greater than hum Consciousness.
GOD needs no purpose as God is most complete and ONE and comparable to none.
Humans certainly have purpose in consciousness known as experience.
