Till 2016 or so, to my knowledge, the only 3 RTP extracts from full-length concerts of SS enjoyable thru UA-cam were in Abhogi, Bagesri (an older version which somehow enthralled me even more) and Charukesi - registered in my mind as ABC and all 3 pretty high in my list of favourite Raags ( though only subsequent to Hindolam which will always stay atop). Bagesri topped my truncated mini-list and had given way to obsessive and recurrent listening in preference over the other two. SS, whose Sukhanubhava and Manodharma were obviously and amply in evidence since the very inception stages of his career as a Carnatic vocalist, must have worked pretty assiduously and diligently by virtue of his legendary commitment to and involvement with this art-form to enhance the strength and projection of his hitherto feeble and fragile voice of the early 1990s into a very firm, alluring and deep-throated one and thereby one of his myriad assets in musical terms. Melody, I daresay, is his middle name and copiously pervades all aspects of his countless renditions be it raaga alapana, thanam, swaraprasthas et al; his fertile imagination and prolific creativity manifesting as spontaneous and extempore improvisations that often stun Rasikas no end - a brief 'cameo' induction of a line from an old Tamil film song of the vintage era as a phrase into the Bagesri Alapana serves as a case in point. This 'occurence' has been recalled by the maestro himself in one of the editions of his On That Note ! The spate of RTP extracts and Alapana excerpts that have lately mushroomed in the UA-cam of several past and contemporary musicians, presumably in the wake of the Pandemic onset, is an exciting spin-off and boon to listeners like myself exiled from live concerts thanks to age-health-fitness-wellness related issues and concerns and whose credentials and knowledge of Carnatic music doesn't extend much beyond 'an ear for good music' 🙏

The only artist who has done full justice to this original Hindustani raag . Hindustani raags r generally rendered as tukdas in Carnatic
