  • In this video i will be showing you the complete setup of Jeff's 150 gallon in wall reef tank build. Jeff was remodeling his office and wanted to add a reef tank into the wall/craw space. We decided to get a non drilled 150 gallon aquariums and add a shadow overflow box. We build a custom sump out of a 75 gallon aquarium and added a bubble magus curve 9 skimmer, jebao dc9000 return pump and the new neptune apex controller. When it came to his ro/di mixing station we plumbed it in a way that he would never have to live a finger to change his water and top of his ato container. FInally we added a 30 gallon frag tank and 5 sb reef lights connected to the apex. This tank is only two months old and it had sps growing and coralline algae on the bottom glass.

    How much space is above the tank to work? It looks tight. And it looks like there is no front doors to work from there. Maybe camera angles make it look tighter? Great work though! Looks WELL THOUGHT OUT!

      Not much but i made it work, i had no control over the house layout but i worked around the area provided

    Great video . Thank you for your service and helping other VETS. People forget that when service men and women come back more often than not that is the time they need us the most

    At around 10 minutes you’re talking about the quarantine tank and adding copper to it and that it made your live rock no good and so you just threw out the live rock into the garbage. Can you explain how or why the rock is no longer good? Thanks

    • @FishOfHex
      @FishOfHex  7 років тому

      the copper will kill everything on the rock and soak into it. If you ever put that rock into a tank and try to keep coral or inverts it will kill them.

    Sweet build! Is the plan to continue to only keep the sand, rock and blocks in the refugium? Or will you go with something like chaeto? Newbie question, sorry. And why not put the skimmer before the refugium? Won't the skimmer kill or remove what you're growing in the refugium? Working on designing my first tank and sump now. This is something that I've been wrestling with.

    • @FishOfHex
      @FishOfHex  7 років тому

      cheato will be added later on. The skimmer wont have any impact on anything growing in the refugium. even if you put the skimmer before how does something get to the refugium? it would have to go through the skimmer section, so it doesnt matter

    • @JyB818
      @JyB818 7 років тому

      Thanks Travis! Keep up the good work. I credit a lot of what I've learned to you!

  • @yohannicholas7282
    @yohannicholas7282 7 років тому

    Nice build, but why would you have the refugium before the skimmer? That's where your copepods populate so why would the next stage be something that can skim them out? I always do the refugium after the skimmer. 🤔👊

    • @FishOfHex
      @FishOfHex  7 років тому

      +Yohan Nicholas it doesnt matter how do you think the pods get to a refugium? They would need to pass thr skimmer.

    • @yohannicholas7282
      @yohannicholas7282 7 років тому

      FishOfHex not if they’re reproducing in the refugium and going from their straight to the main display, rather going from a refugium to the skimmer where more would get skimmed out than if the refugium was last.

    I have a question for you, this build looks like it's on the second floor of a house so what's your rule on putting a tank that big on a second floor? I have a 110 gallon and we are looking to move soon an my fear is putting it on the second floor of our new house and it going through the floor. It might sound stupid but it's something that's in the back of my mind any my wife's.

    • @FishOfHex
      @FishOfHex  7 років тому

      +Tony Resendez i never put a tank over 100g on the second without a contractor looking over the house first. Rule of thumb put the tank on a load barring wall. Again get someone to look over the house bc you can only make a mistake like that once.

    Interesting video. Just curious as to why you used tap water for the initial fill when you had an RODI unit with mixing station.

    • @FishOfHex
      @FishOfHex  7 років тому +1

      The mixing station was setup after the tank/sump. I start most of the systems with tap as long as its below 150 tds. The cycled rock and carbon filters will take care of any nutrients within a couple days. Never had an issue and like i said hes growing sps and coraline algae within two months.

    • @lisadimercurio9473
      @lisadimercurio9473 7 років тому

      Brad, I think he just used tap water for the leak test

    • @FishOfHex
      @FishOfHex  7 років тому

      I use it for the leak test and as i said above it the tds is under 150 ill start the tank with it. It really comes down to the location if a system is in the city and has high tds that wouldnt be a good idea but if its in a house in the country with a salt filter in line with the house its not going to be an issue.

    • @bgoldb21
      @bgoldb21 7 років тому +1

      Thanks Travis. You can't argue with results. My tds is over 450 so I keep my tap water as far away from my tank as possible.
