Matt Bean I'm from Detroit, and did you know that Karl Malone was a marked man when he came to Detroit. The Police protected him like he was the President and It wasn't about money, It was for Isiah Thomas. It took his daughter to get him off the hook because she played with the Shocks. Every hood was ready to go to war for Isiah Thomas for free. You don't see that love for todays players like that.

This hit was in December of 1991. Which BTW is before the full roster of the 1992 Olympic Dream Team had been finalized. Anyone saying Isiah was "motivated" by not being selected for the Dream Team is just flat out wrong. Because only 10 of 12 players were selected before the season began. Two spots were still open, Drexler and Thomas were both candidates for the remaining pro spot (one college player was allowed, although no one is sure why they didn't choose Shaq over Laettner). And Drexler wasn't announced as an addition to the roster until May 12th of 1992. So, there was no animosity in December of 1991.
To be honest, I still think they should've picked Shaq even though they already had Ewing and Robinson at center and Shaq would not have much playing time either way(altho Shaq could have easily fit at 4 due to his athletic ability). I think they were so enamored by Duke's success and Laettner's classic game against Kentucky that they decided to pick him.
starkk19 honestly, they could have picked me to play center for the Dream Team and never missed a beat and I'm a foot shorter and a 125lbs lighter than Shaq.
swiftslick Two things: 1, Isiah was motivated by not making the dream team. I remember this game like yesterday. Isiah was killing John Stockton in embarrassing fashion. Almost every point was a highlight I think Isiah had 45 points. Karl Malone got sick of Isiah humiliating Stockton (which Malone confirmed) and cheap shot Isiah. 2. Laettner got picked over Shaq because he had a lot better collage career then Shaq. And when Duke played LSU in 92' Laettner was killing Shaq.
logic2000 -- The full roster wasn't finalized by December 1991. "Clyde Drexler of the Portland Trail Blazers and Isiah Thomas of the Detroit Pistons were the candidates for the final professional roster spot. But it had nothing to do with this actual game. Drexler hadn't even been selected at this point, so technically Isiah wasn't OUT yet.
+swiftslick They had already named 10 players and Isiah wasn't one of them. He knew what was up. Don't know what you are reading from but at this time, most expected two college players (likely Shaq and Laettner) to round out the squad. Drexler had a huge season and was a late idea.

NO, not really. People can play ball or they can fight. Spilled blood is where things turn into a fight and there wont be much ball playing after that. It does not take too long to find out who wants to play ball and who wants to fight. The boys who want to play ball have to trust each other. You make it sound like boyz in the hood have no sense, no brains, and all they can do is fight because they do not have the understanding to operate on a higher systematic level. Even boyz in the hood know that playing ball is more fun than constant worries about paybacks on the court, and blow out fights. There might be some jungle ball (high contact play) on the court, but actually knocking people down, that is not going to hold up with people who want to play ball even in the hood, and boyz in the hood ARE smart enough to know that. You are twisting the deal, and you are not right.
MrYoumitube When LA had Malone, Payton, Shaq, and Kobe, 2003 -2004 they should have been unbeatable .......but they were not. Players have to be able to play well with each other, function as a team, even IF they are really great players..... its a TEAM sport, something that the Spurs proved again in the 2014 finals.
He delivered a cheapshot elbow like he did his whole shitty career.all those years with the best assist man and still couldnt mount to jack shit! You must be a jazz fan when brag about cheapshots cause you sure as hell cant brag about any rings! Fuck malone hahaha
People must of forgot what Malone did to David Robinson. Also they of must forget what Isaiah, Laimbeer, Rodman, and the rest of their team did to opposing players. It was just a part of the game in the dirty eighties and nineties. I am so glad they took bully ball out of the NBA. It takes no talent to give cheap shots.
Well too bad theyve taken too much out of the nba. Now its not even hard -.-. A league who doesnt deserve to be called the toughest/hardest league in the world
Mrabo007 Are you talking about hardest sports league or hardest basketball league in the world? Because I'm pretty sure the rest of the world still doesn't even begin to approach the NBA in terms of skill.
@netpup i just have to say malone was not the only player thinking that about magic, there was still alot to learn about hiv and say something like this incident happened with magic that other play could have been affected. and also what is number 3?
the game before this Isaiah scored like fifty points on Stockton. I think he was mad he didn't make the Dream Team. Karl was making sure Isaiah didn't think he could show up his buddy Stockton in Utah. Isaiah deserved it and Karl delivered.
Deserved it? LOL why? Because he was lighting Stockton up? Oh I'm sorry Mr. Stockton, I'm not going to rip you a new one on the basketball court and help my team win because that would be wrong somehow. By the way, what's the ring count again... Isiah 2, Stockton and Malone 0
Malone led with his elbow intentionally. It was retaliation because Thomas lit John Stockton up for Fifty (50) Points in an earlier game to make a point about the politicized Dream Team I selection. Malone was a coward roughly seven inches taller and 65 pounds heavier than Thomas. But he still blindsided the little guy. I would have loved to have seen Rick Mahorn break Karl Malone's back.
The Pistons were not dirty. They were tough. People who watched 80's basketball have terrible memories and have allowed their perceptions to be limited and the media to mold their opinions. The Pistons had the reputation of being dirty, and were nicknamed the Bad Boys. However, they were no more "dirty" than any other team in the league. More than half the league played the way they played. The only difference was, the Pistons were winning! Therefore, that style of play stood out more with them. "They deserved it.", "What goes around, comes around." LOL man please.
Give me break. The Pistons were a very dirty team cheered on by their captain Isiah. I watched those games back in the 80's and early 90's and my memory is just fine. Laimbeer, Rodman, Mahorn, Agguire and Thomas were all very talented but dirty cheap shot artists. It's sad because they didn't need to be that way to win.
+phenom2311 The Pistons were certainly not dirtier than the Celtics of that era. Larry Bird was a rough player and sometimes an instigator of fights, Kevin McHale could be dirty too (especially when he clotheslined the Lakers' Kurt Rambis in the '84 Finals), Greg Kite, M.L.Carr, and ESPECIALLY Danny Ainge were known for dirty play. And every NBA team then had at least one or two physical players.
Malone is a sucker. He hated on Magic about playing with him when he contracted HIV, then at the end of his career he signed with the Lakers to try and backdoor his way to a championship, and he cheap shotted Jordan and numerous other players.
They'd never call it but he'd bump his elbow here and there to get space, there is a difference between throwing it at someones face like Malone and bruising the defense but its still a cheap tactic and he'd deserve hard fouls because of it
My wife works for the doctor who stitched up Thomas. It didn't take 40 stitches to close up the cut. It only took 4. Besides, if it had taken 40 stitches, there is no way Thomas could have come back into the game, as he would have lost too much blood.
Thing was that the Bad Boys really weren't much 'badder' than most teams back then. The Sixers, Celtics, Lakers were every bit as dirty and physical in the 80s, especially in the playoffs. The Knicks and Bulls were even worse a few years later. I agree that something had to change, as hard fouls went from intimidating defense to outright attempts to cause injury... But growing up watching NBA playoffs from the mid 80s thru mid 90s, the Bad Boys really weren't terribly dirtier than most teams.
Karl Malone should have been suspended 10 games for this. He obviously was looking to hurt someone he did not like because Isaiah would embarrass john Stockton every time they played. Disgraceful. That is why that guy never won anything.
I'm sure Malone did what everyone wanted to do to those flagrant fouling dirtbags..there is NO WAY those dirty Pistons would win anything today with flagrant fouling rules. Joe Dumars would be the only player left on the floor by the 3rd period.
I love seeing that, guys who are actually like family to eachother. those guys jumping off the bench and going to fight malone and standing up for their teammate, very few teams/players have that anymore. Everything is about money today.
Karl Malone should've been escorted by police and gone to jail for this criminal act on Isiah Thomas and been banned for the rest of the season at least. If Thomas instigated flagrant fouls of Laimbeer, Mahorn etc. during Bad Boys era then it was the return to him. Expect a return to K. Malone to happen one day for this and the rest (K. Malone was very dirty player). Second such atrocity should be permanent ban from basketball (or even for the first one). Few permanent bans form sports and there would be no such atrocities in sports. Stockton's got better stats but Thomas had his way with Stockton almost every time. Thus Thomas was way better player than Stockton and could elevate his usually high level of play for a level or two in the clutch, the thing Stockton couldn't do. Jordan, Pippen, Bird and Magic hated Thomas partly because of frustrations of losing hard from Thomas' Bad Boys and partly for Thomas' likely role (instigation) in dirty plays of Laimbeer, Mahorn and Rodman. That hate is the only reason Thomas wasn't in Mostly Dream Team. Obviously love for playing for USA wasn't nearly as strong as the men's hatred of Thomas.
153Catman And I wonder how Karl Malone didn't already get his return while he was still playing. It seems he was dirty only against weaker or more peaceful players, never saw him to have done that what he did to Thomas or Jordan to Mahorn, Laimbeer, Ben Wallace, Barkley, Oakley, McDaniel, Dale Davis etc. They would all have beaten his cowardly behind badly.
+153Catman I am from Houston, and I remember when Malone, in his college days, elbowed a Rice University player named Mark Ramer and broke his jaw or cheekbone. So this sort of thing was nothing new for Malone.
whenever i'm sad & lonely (that's whenever ur sister is not around), i watch this video of Zeke flagrantly smashing his eyebrows onto Malone's elbow........ and it brightens up my day. PEACE
nah, I'm not saying he should have carried the team. I'm just saying he did get his in the end. he was with a Lakers squad that quite honestly should have had a clean sweep of the entire playoffs (this is coming from someone who is not a Lakers fan) but they almost got swept by the Pistons. it's just ironic, that's all
If you listen to the older players that played in the 90's there was 2 places they hated playing usually. If you watched the games, you could see how different they played them with all the quick jab and "second fouls". Detroit 1st and Utah 2nd. Karl Malone wasn't as bad as John though. He would jab anyone that drove and he was notorious for tripping people up by sweeping them. Great era of basketball regardless.
demoncleaner45 ......if I'm not mistaken this was in retaliation for Isiah questioning in a interview why he was left off the Dream Team when Stockton was selected who he considered himself better than. I think that 44 pt. game vs. Utah by Isiah in the first time they met after this game.
there's alot more going on here first the Pistons had rough up Stockton in a earlier game and most of all Isaiah was lighting John Stockton because he was put on the first dream team instead of Isaiah believe because of Micheal Jordan(side note it was rumor Isaiah had east conference Allstar teammates shut Jordan out in the 1987 game)who refuse to play when he saw Thomas on the list of Dream Team teammates but agree when Thomas was replace with Stockton Which ironically Thomas former best friend Magic Johnson admitted he actually did in his book years later, but this game happen shortly after the Dream Team was announced and Malone got tired of his boy getting lit up !!!
Isiah thomas truly the most underrated and under-appreciated star of the NBA. Pistons only team back then with winning records against the Celtcis, lakers and bulls. And look at all these hating ass comments

There might be some jungle ball (high contact play) on the court, but actually knocking people down, that is not going to hold up with people who want to play ball even in the hood, and boyz in the hood ARE smart enough to know that. You are twisting the deal, and you are not right.
The mail man don't deliver any Championship Rings to any cities he plays for.
Wow he clobbered Isiah
I love how he just picks the ball up like nothing happened
Wish the NBA was still like this. No easy buckets. If you’re gonna dish it out (Bad Boy Pistons), then you gotta take it as well. Good shit Karl.
that elbow would have been nice on lambeers teeth//////
People must of forgot what Malone did to David Robinson. Also they of must forget what Isaiah, Laimbeer, Rodman, and the rest of their team did to opposing players. It was just a part of the game in the dirty eighties and nineties. I am so glad they took bully ball out of the NBA. It takes no talent to give cheap shots.
Well too bad theyve taken too much out of the nba. Now its not even hard -.-. A league who doesnt deserve to be called the toughest/hardest league in the world
Mrabo007 Are you talking about hardest sports league or hardest basketball league in the world? Because I'm pretty sure the rest of the world still doesn't even begin to approach the NBA in terms of skill.
too bad top teams dont try to win in regular season today throwing elbows is competition
***** k
milan j
Not you. OP
And the Detroit "Bad Boys" Pistons never gave a hard fowl?
Deserved it? LOL why? Because he was lighting Stockton up? Oh I'm sorry Mr. Stockton, I'm not going to rip you a new one on the basketball court and help my team win because that would be wrong somehow. By the way, what's the ring count again... Isiah 2, Stockton and Malone 0
BP3DP Nah. They were tough men that made tender chickens.
you know, it's okay cause Zeke has two rings and Malone has zero. even with that stacked ass Lakers team, he still couldn't beat the Pistons
That was beautiful and still is
Might be the best post of all time.
That is one of the best moments in NBA history. Thomas had that coming.
Bet you voted for Biden! Maybe you deserve that too!
Isaiah finally knew how the Pistons' opponents felt every time they went up against Bill Laimbeer
Bad boy, huh?
after the hit, Isiah said to Malone's elbow:
"U got me at hello."
Zeke deserved that lol
No, the Dream Team was announced in the summer of 1991. This game occurred during the 91-92 season.
That is not a pleasant sound :/
JYPark14 it was a sound effect
Malone led with his elbow intentionally. It was retaliation because Thomas lit John Stockton up for Fifty (50) Points in an earlier game to make a point about the politicized Dream Team I selection. Malone was a coward roughly seven inches taller and 65 pounds heavier than Thomas. But he still blindsided the little guy. I would have loved to have seen Rick Mahorn break Karl Malone's back.
+Jacob Shade you forgot the part where as a college player he got a 13 year old pregnant.
Well if anyone deserved it, it's Isiah Thomas.
Always glad to help.
you gotta take what you give out.... you the bad boys, so good one karl for not backing down and giving isish an elbow.
I doubt they cheap shot karl in that game like he did to isiah
George Halas lol... they cheap shoted everyone... you dont get the title bad boys for being nice....
the first E MAIL ever!!hahahaha
The Pistons were not dirty. They were tough. People who watched 80's basketball have terrible memories and have allowed their perceptions to be limited and the media to mold their opinions. The Pistons had the reputation of being dirty, and were nicknamed the Bad Boys. However, they were no more "dirty" than any other team in the league. More than half the league played the way they played. The only difference was, the Pistons were winning! Therefore, that style of play stood out more with them. "They deserved it.", "What goes around, comes around." LOL man please.
Real Talk ppl truly forget how their GREAT their defense was.
Rodman and Mahorn were dirty players, and Laimbeer was the dirtiest I've seen
mubarak hakim Best ever
Very satisfying crunch at 4 seconds.
Malone is a sucker. He hated on Magic about playing with him when he contracted HIV, then at the end of his career he signed with the Lakers to try and backdoor his way to a championship, and he cheap shotted Jordan and numerous other players.
He had a legitimate concern about Magic. Nothing wrong with wanting to win a championship either.
Michael Jordan used to throw that elbow too and that style of basketball was considered normal back then
Mario Mendoza
Jordan didn't throw elbows at people. Show me a clip where he is throwing an elbow
They'd never call it but he'd bump his elbow here and there to get space, there is a difference between throwing it at someones face like Malone and bruising the defense but its still a cheap tactic and he'd deserve hard fouls because of it
blaq7427 I don't know about Jordan but Shaq threw the 'bows like a boss:
ua-cam.com/video/FJ3FXLyNFew/v-deo.html
Damn...I remember this happening back in the day. I was like 11 or 12 and Thomas was like my 3rd fav player back then...after Magic & Ewing of coarse.
That is why that guy never won anything.
fuck suspension, this is hard nose basketball. Todays nba is soft.
I agree that todays basket ball is soft but come on . this was to much.
alansjf33 it comes with the territory
i believe the league office gave Karl Malone an award for risking injury to his elbow and a standing ovation. Great job by The Mailman
I'm sure Malone did what everyone wanted to do to those flagrant fouling dirtbags..there is NO WAY those dirty Pistons would win anything today with flagrant fouling rules. Joe Dumars would be the only player left on the floor by the 3rd period.
Where can I see Karl Malone elbow David Robinson? I've been looking for a long time
Isiah threw a couple of cheap shots in his career but that was a dirty, ratchet play by Malone and he should have been suspended 10 games.
Eric Matterson 80s and 90s basketball, not that big a deal lol
Point was made.
Steph curry needs some of that
I love seeing that, guys who are actually like family to eachother. those guys jumping off the bench and going to fight malone and standing up for their teammate, very few teams/players have that anymore.
153Catman Are you saying that Jordan was weak and peaceful? Lol no
mailman like boxer
whenever i'm sad & lonely (that's whenever ur sister is not around), i watch this video of Zeke flagrantly smashing his eyebrows onto Malone's elbow........ and it brightens up my day.
PEACE
I like how you proved me wrong with your brilliant comment.
That was a brutal elbow to the face. You can see the blood coming out of his face.
Payback is a B! Right Isiah?
what program is this from?
nah, I'm not saying he should have carried the team. I'm just saying he did get his in the end. he was with a Lakers squad that quite honestly should have had a clean sweep of the entire playoffs (this is coming from someone who is not a Lakers fan) but they almost got swept by the Pistons. it's just ironic, that's all
흑자보고왔는데 소리가 미쳤네
If you listen to the older players that played in the 90's there was 2 places they hated playing usually. If you watched the games, you could see how different they played them with all the quick jab and "second fouls". Detroit 1st and Utah 2nd. Karl Malone wasn't as bad as John though. He would jab anyone that drove and he was notorious for tripping people up by sweeping them. Great era of basketball regardless.
The on court microphones seem to have picked up the sound of the hit, ouch!
@Pain5155 Um, you get ejected if you leave the bench, so what do you want them to do?
That’s what u get for thinking ur a bad boy
about the jazz not winning? no haven't seen that vid. i did watch the finals at the time. what does it say in the vid?
demoncleaner45 ......if I'm not mistaken this was in retaliation for Isiah questioning in a interview why he was left off the Dream Team when Stockton was selected who he considered himself better than.
Nobody complaining, John Stockton easily greatest point guard ever
Knowing what we know now about concussions, if this was intentional, a 20 game suspension is warranted.
Why can't I find the Malone elbow David Robinson video?
Isiah thomas truly the most underrated and under-appreciated star of the NBA. Pistons only team back then with winning records against the Celtcis, lakers and bulls. And look at all these hating ass comments
Thank you, finally someone understands how good Isaiah is.
The funny part is that Isiah came back to that game. If someone did that today, the player would be gone for a couple of days.
You can tell it was a hard hit when you can hear the crack through the 80s quality mics.
welcome to the paint!!!!
I see The Mailman delivered my message.
