The song spent a then record 16 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay and topped both the Radio & Records and Top 40 Mainstream charts. Its airplay-only release disqualified it from the Hot 100, but it was far bigger than most songs that topped that chart. The saccharine classic rock ballad certainly made its mark.
