Eclipse 2017 - NASA Chasing the Shadow at 50,000 ft | Concorde 1973

  • For some, the Great American Eclipse will be almost 3x longer than for those in the best spot on the ground.
For those lucky few will be in a pair of NASA WB-57's at 50,000 ft chasing the solar eclipse but it's not the first time this has been done.
In 1973 Concorde 001 chased the longest solar eclipse for 1000 years over Africa for over 70 minutes, a record that remains unbroken.

If it works don't fix it. No point using a state of the art million quadrillion modern jets if 1950s jets NASA has had for years can do litearly the same thing.

Brian Smith : Exactly. And it always amazes me so much unique content Curious Droid can come up with. At least most of it is completely new to me, and I read a lot of popular science and subscribe to many science and technology channels on UA-cam. But Curious Droid seems to be able to find unique topics or at the very least unique angles on known topics. Keep up the good work!!

I live in Oregon and had a birds eye view of the eclipse.
However, I am afraid I won't be able to make the one on July 16th 2186 as I would be 208 years old and be a retirement home by then.

probably with additional fuel tanks in the weapon bay, but you have to get hold of one in the first place if the russians won't try that for themselves.

Fascinating stuff, and of course, beautiful images of the much-missed Concorde. Slight correction, no doubt pointed out by others before me: the Soviet Tupolev TU-144 was the first supersonic airliner to fly, beating Concorde by a few weeks. Concorde was the first to be actually introduced into service, however.

That's awesome, thanks for the science and information. Especially on the Concord and the two WB-57s. A real shame they can't fly super sonic and even if they could, there would be shattered windows from coast to coast. (Impossible to fly that long, I know)
Wish I could have planed for this. Tampa Florida isn't too far away from South Carolina. But that's a huge journey for two minutes of being graced by the void. I'd be worth it though. Sadly I can't.

Just to be shallow for a moment: I still think Concorde with the landing gear up and the nose in the fast-cruise position is... beautiful. To my eyes, the lines and proportions are perfect.
I know all the negative points about the plane, and agree that such criticism is still 100% valid, but from a purely aesthetic viewpoint, Concorde - to me - embodies the notion of poetry in motion.

*Tupolev Tu-160 can fly with Mach 2 for long enough, but no one will allow to drill holes in it.* Though I am not sure why there is a need to observe the eclipse in the first place. This is a quite simple and well understood phenomenon, nothing much can be derived from chasing Moon's shadow.
