Eclipse 2017 - NASA Chasing the Shadow at 50,000 ft | Concorde 1973
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 сер 2017
- For some, the Great American Eclipse will be almost 3x longer than for those in the best spot on the ground.
For those lucky few will be in a pair of NASA WB-57's at 50,000 ft chasing the solar eclipse but it's not the first time this has been done.
In 1973 Concorde 001 chased the longest solar eclipse for 1000 years over Africa for over 70 minutes, a record that remains unbroken.

1973 - Using state of the art supersonic airliner
2017 - 1950's plane
Kinda crazy, huh??
it's so depressing

That's what happens when people don't like having their windows blown out.
NASA's working on it though.
With quartz portholes.
If it works don't fix it. No point using a state of the art million quadrillion modern jets if 1950s jets NASA has had for years can do litearly the same thing.
Concorde is one of the most - if not the most - beautiful piece of engineering ever made.
my grandfather worked with British Airways on the nose of the plane.
If only i would have flown in the concorde
Mine on the landing gear :)
Just as you, I'd have enjoyed it so much.
911gp i remember the days everytime a concorde was passing above my house i was realizing it was her. My house was close to heathrow airport. Its engines were really powerfull there was a massive sound everytime it was flying by..
Sr-71 Blackbird is even more impressive and beautiful imo
911gp tell that to the people who died on it......
Imagine looking at the eclipse and witnessing the plane flying by
You've really upped the game with your videos. The production is so sleek.
Brian Smith : Exactly. And it always amazes me so much unique content Curious Droid can come up with. At least most of it is completely new to me, and I read a lot of popular science and subscribe to many science and technology channels on UA-cam. But Curious Droid seems to be able to find unique topics or at the very least unique angles on known topics. Keep up the good work!!
Brian Smith and those shirts are always as lit AF.
I'm in Tennessee, and saw one of the planes during totality! It went over right after totality started.
I live in Oregon and had a birds eye view of the eclipse.
However, I am afraid I won't be able to make the one on July 16th 2186 as I would be 208 years old and be a retirement home by then.
8-26-17
Another solar eclipse is coming in 17 years.
Xavier Rodriguez But not in the path of the USA the next Total Eclipse in USA won't be for another 400 years I believe
@Xavier - where is that one going to be?
@MixGeek: you might want to check on that. Monday April 8 2024 is the next Total Solar Eclipse in the USA. Starts in Mexico and sweeps northeast through Texas and up through the states in the northeast then further on.
aeromoe yay ill be 17 at that time
I absolutely love everything about your channel.
very pleasant and calm presentation. Refreshing in those days of super fast youtube videos! thanks
I was in the back of an old jeep cherokee on a cliff over looking the pacific ocean. We were tpgether completey and had forgotten of wjat was happening above. I think of ypu often. As this was beautiful. One of the most beautiful moments of my life. How it happened I cant rightly rememebr but you were beaitiful, and Im sure you still will be the next time the sun falls behind us. No name to leave here, but im sure you'll know its you if you ever read this. Im so grateful to have expirenced it with you...
This channel is just amazing! Always Unique!
This channel is so good.
Absolute quality and I just hope that UA-cam's new rules and regs don't destroy channels like this.
Paul, this was an excellent video!
Very interesting video! Love the way you explain stuff Paul, you are so easy/interesting to listen to 😬 keep up the good work 👏 thanks
Thank you for all the information! Truly unique video.
Another brill vid, thank you! Proud patron here
Who’s watching this after the eclipse?
I think a lot of people are.
lol just watch the viewcount after the eclipse happened... that's a pretty stupid question lol
I watched this video before curious droid recorded it.
Thank you for the wonderful videos.
One of the few channels i have subscribed to. Wish u had more subscribers . Your content is really on point👍
Great video mate.
Great video as always thanks .
Wonderful presentation!
TU-160 inverted using the bomb bay for equipment😂
The tu160 has a top speed of 1,379 mph just under Mach 2 it's not fast enough
naah, won't cut it. tu-160 can't do supercruise, and with afterburner fully engaged she won't last long.
probably with additional fuel tanks in the weapon bay, but you have to get hold of one in the first place if the russians won't try that for themselves.
Great video as always :)
another superb video!
great shirt ... awesome vid .. thanks paul 👍👍
Outstanding content!
Amazing as always thank you.😁
+Curious Droid . GREAT video man ! Only matched by the awesomeness of your shirt... Very multidimensional "Tesseract". Super sonic passenger flight IS coming back.
i love your videos, very informative.
This music makes me feel like doing a high level science project... in space!
Awesome stuff! Thank you.
Man, all the shirts you wear during your videos are all fire!
I was so ready to report the thumbnail for click bait but this was completely true. Of course, those planes don't fly today but they did back in 1973 when it was used to follow an eclipse.
Thanks for the video, one of the best I've seen.
I recently read something about this and then I see this on my UA-cam feed. Love it!
Awesome video Thank you for posting! Concord is still to this day the most beautiful passenger jet to ever grace the sky!
Fantastic Content
Great information. Thank you.
Great video.👍
Man I love the Concorde. What a Beauty!
Good presentation with good visuals.
Thanks for the info, Varys.
Fascinating stuff, and of course, beautiful images of the much-missed Concorde. Slight correction, no doubt pointed out by others before me: the Soviet Tupolev TU-144 was the first supersonic airliner to fly, beating Concorde by a few weeks. Concorde was the first to be actually introduced into service, however.
Amazing British and French CONCORDE technical achievement !
This guy is always wearing the coolest shirts. :•D
Keep up the good work! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Awesome video, I'm hopefully going to be watching the eclipse in Oregon. Fingers crossed to get the time off work! It will be my first ever so I can't wait!!
no doubt the Concorde was a amazing engineering feat
Your great! Thank you! :)
Great video
I never heard this story before. Thank you very much.
Many many thanks from France ! I didn't know this story :-)
Super Cool Video!!!
Super Cool Plane!!!
Super Cool Shirt!!!
OOPS ALMOST FORGOT
Super Cool Music!!!
I'm here for the shirt
I'm sad they had to retire Concorde. I distinctly remember it going over head all the time when I was younger, what a sight and sound it was.
I like the music choice for this video.
very nice and informative video,,
Another amazing aspect to the Concorde!
I live in PA and took my granddaughters to SC for the eclipse. Drove 1 hr for each ten seconds of totality. Worth every minute.
Loved this one..
"will aim to capture the first ever images of nano flares." _shows images of nano flares_
Penny Lane cgi of nano flares
1:03 Uhm, I don't think so.
Penny Lane are you that dumb?
Not dumb at all, just CGI getting better and better :D
CraftyF0X :D XD rawr
Wow, that is just awesome.
Excellent piece. Unfortunately back then,we only got thirty minutes of world news daily, and this event with the Concorde was not covered in detail,if any at all.
funky shirt Paul !
WB-57 is an American built English Electric Canberra. A legendary airframe noted for it's stability and therefore use as a reconnaissance aircraft.
and bomber, trainer, target tug and like 15 other task the camberra is versatil girl
I found a new channel I love
Good video man, I'm lucky enough to live in Carbondale in southern illinois and will get to enjoy being in the darkness! It's supposed to get crazy here!
I plan to come out to Carbondale or Makanda depending on the crowds....
mozi tzu if what nasa est.'s The visitor numbers to be are true then maybe 50,000 people are coming to to the area! All our hotels are booked, the colleges Rec center is turning a basketball court into a hostel for the event. Ozzy Osborne is going to sing bark at the moon during the Eclipse at "Moonstock or moonfest", at a vineyard near Makanda, il. So if your worried about crowds, I don't know what will be bub... I hope you attend. Are you a local in the area or next door in one of the state's mozi?
Flying in from Florida I got a Hotel 2.5 hrs north at Shelbyville so I plan to drive in like 5am with a full tank of gas and food and water for the day :-)
mozi tzu I hope it won't be too congested on your drive into the interior of the totality sphere.
The drive in was nothing. The drive out was another story. an 8 3/4 hour drive turned into a 14 hour one for me.
This is AMAZING! I can't believe that there are actually B-57s that can still fly! :)
Am I the only one super-jealous of those scientists?
Epic video! Good job! Is hard as a UA-cam channel to get me subscribed and you did it in just two videos☺
We're headed down into the path in Western Kentucky. Got a telescope and glasses.
Cool stuff
Thanks for having captions for the deaf :)
Fantastic to know about the Concord chasing the Moon shadow
Concord is a grape. Concorde has an E in it.
aeromoe, thanks for pointing that. In my defense, I found the following link: www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/cabinet-office-100/the-supersonic-airliner/concord-or-concorde/
In 1973 Concorde 001 chased the longest solar eclipse for 1000 years over Africa for over 70 minutes, a record that remains unbroken.
i think the "the longest solar eclipse for 1000 years" should be changed to "the longest solar eclipse in 1000 years"
The Concorde flight sort of restores my faith in humanity for a brief moment.
As always CD, top of the line information. (however, you did veer a bit off topic,
the Concorde story is a topic within itself ).
Nevertheless, this solar eclipse coming up is something that everyone within a noticeable observation area is something you should not miss.
Myself, I will be viewing from South-West British Columbia, in the higher foothills of the Cascade Range. This region will experience 86% totality.
thumbnail is a masterpiece
That shirt is so cool
Yes! Love it
I was given the opportunity to fly along in a private jet at 30,000ft for the eclipse this year and I took a picture of one of those Nasa planes who I estimated at the time to be at about 50k ft. I didn't even realize it until now, so awesome!!!!
I can't wait for the eclipse. My school is selling the glasses, and we get dismissed from class to watch it.
Amazing
It was amazing.
The concorde was a massive milestone in aviation. I still can't believe they got rid of it. It just doesn't make sense. What an incredible step backwards. It's like if we just stopped using electricity.
Thanks for this!
Again, PLEASE do a feature as to why didn't Apollo 6's severe bugs crop up in Apollo 4's perfect maiden flight when you'd expect the Saturn V's gremlins to be leaping out!
Keep up the good show!
Jim in NYC
How come I of all people never knew this?! Thanks to Curious Droid, now I do... ;-)
Cool vid good to knowwwww
Very interesting
Lol I was in the musée de l'air in le Bourget twice but it's only now that I understand what was actually going on with that very Concorde.
Damn it feels like we made a major step backwards in supersonic flight...
We did. The withdrawal of Concorde is one of the few instances in recorded human history where we have taken a step backwards, technologically speaking.
Didn't know Eunuchs are so fascinated with eclipses.
That's awesome, thanks for the science and information. Especially on the Concord and the two WB-57s. A real shame they can't fly super sonic and even if they could, there would be shattered windows from coast to coast. (Impossible to fly that long, I know)
Wish I could have planed for this. Tampa Florida isn't too far away from South Carolina. But that's a huge journey for two minutes of being graced by the void. I'd be worth it though. Sadly I can't.
Do sonic booms at 50,000 feet shatter windows in the ground?
Over an hour long total solar eclipse, just imagine that.
This is becoming one of my favourite science youtube channels.
Just to be shallow for a moment: I still think Concorde with the landing gear up and the nose in the fast-cruise position is... beautiful. To my eyes, the lines and proportions are perfect.
I know all the negative points about the plane, and agree that such criticism is still 100% valid, but from a purely aesthetic viewpoint, Concorde - to me - embodies the notion of poetry in motion.
Great video - thanks. I'm just stunned anyone can thumbs down these excellent presentations. Probably some deranged flat earther...
I don’t know, but I really do like the background music.
*Tupolev Tu-160 can fly with Mach 2 for long enough, but no one will allow to drill holes in it.* Though I am not sure why there is a need to observe the eclipse in the first place. This is a quite simple and well understood phenomenon, nothing much can be derived from chasing Moon's shadow.
That aircraft design is 73 years old, It's direct predecessor was made of wood. You have to take your hat off to NASA for keeping the Canberra flying for all these years.
