I think that Gaunter O'Dimm doesn't just take what he wants by force is because he enjoys the game. He plays by rules because it's the only way he can lose and without the risk of losing where's the fun in anything?

@@HomerAndRoe Well, it's heavily implied that Gaunter O'Dimm is either Satan or some kind of really powerful demonic figure, and demons take sadistic pleasure in causing suffering to humans because it is against their nature not to be. Gaunter, much like Satan, isn't very overt with his power and rather is a figure of temptation who gives people power because they want to play God, this always of course comes at enormous expense of the fool who agrees to their deals.

IIRC Devils are bound to contracts to harvest souls. They need to play by the rules or they are themself sent to a hell even fiends fear. Also Devils and creatures from the Abyss feeds on the suffering on others and it's obviously shown through the DLC.

@David -01 if you look at the bar, everyone Odimm is killing is happy people, mostly because they made a contract with him, if you look properly he could've kill more boring people or people from the scenario, but he just choose to kill certain people on the bar. He isn't that powerful, all he use is magic, when you see him flying you can see that he put "block air" under his foot, that means he can't literally fly, but place magic objects under his feet to simulate fly, which means he is just a magic creature, nothing exceptional. A easy battle is just teleport him to an place that there's no magic, like ciri did. Ciri is actually more powerful than people think, I think she can even win against odimm as her time control is waaay more powerful

I think by far the coolest power of O'Dimm is knowing when someone is studying or thinking about him. The professor just started doing basic research on O'Dimm - somehow O'Dimm became alerted to that. It shows he may have some level of omniscience.

Maybe the name itself is a spell of sorts that requires only strong will and no training like the curses caused by evil deeds? Maybe the books that contain the name have been cursed to inform him who's reading them? There are many possibilities

    • @chadglazier3102

Well, in the Witcher a lot of creatures brought into the human world by the conjunction were the source of many beliefs and legends, or they were interpreted as the manifestation of those legends.
E.g., drowners were thought to be reanimated corpses of those drowned at sea, but in reality they're an entirely different creature. There's also multiple instances of creatures being worshipped as deities, like the lady of the lake (who is actually just an ancient nymph).
The scholar at Oxenfurt explains that O'Dimm has been interpreted by many cultures, over thousands of years, and in all prior cultures he's seen as something along the lines of "evil incarnate". He also always makes deals at crossroads, and always takes the souls of those he makes pacts with (excluding Geralt and one other unknown person). It's pretty clear that, regardless of wherever he truly came from, in the human world he's the basis for the capital-D Devil.
As to what he actually is? Well, he's certainly one-of-a-kind. He explicitly told Geralt that he's neither a demon nor a djinn. His control over time is something never-before-seen in the Witcher (books or otherwise). As you pointed out, he has also has some kind of omniscience. So he's special, and he's on a level far above any other entity described in the Witcher, but not much else is clear.

Into the thoughts of human beings. We don't know if he has the same ability with other forms of life. Vampires are entirely different species. And I assume, having lived since ancient times, they'd be familiar with both ancient and modern magic, and would have countermeasures in place at their "homes" given that they wouldn't want to leave themselves vulnerable to some human being wishing for one of their deaths.

Indeed. Gaunter reminds me of an evil version of Mr. Mxyzptlk. If you're not familiar, he's a Superman "villain" from another dimension that's basically omnipotent. He can rewrite the laws of physics or reality as he pleases, create or destroy anything, he's basically God. He shows up, does some pranks, and generally makes a pest of himself. Supes can only beat him by tricking him into saying his name backwards (hard to even say it forwards...) which banishes him for a decent period of time. But he's also revealed the name backwards thing is just another game to him, and he doesn't have to honor it. He does because it's fun for him.
Gaunter reminds me of the same sort of thing, except instead of looking to just amuse himself, he seems disgusted with the rotten bastards of the Witcher world (and really, aren't you?) and likes to punish them.

More than anything O'Dimm strikes me as... bored. He plays games, treats everyone as his own toys. He's also unnecessarily theatrical, he could be much more efficient in his soul- harvesting, but he seems to genuinly enjoy playing with his victims. It's a bit like a well-fed housecat playing with a mouse before eventually killing it. Unseen elder or a peasant, I don't personally see it making much of a difference.
I love the fact that they didn't include all the details, the "mystery" is what makes O'Dimm my absolute favorite character. The lack of specific information is what makes our humble merchant of mirrors so god damn interesting.

Gaunter is, by nature, a far more interesting character. We've seen him killed a man with a spoon and threatened to take Vlodimir with him - which proves that he never needed a contract to kill someone or take their soul. Not strictly true. Loki isn't the devil, but behaves very similarly to gaunter.
In fact I'd argue that applying our concepts of "good" and "evil" to higher powers is entirely subjective. Most pantheonic religions and mythologies don't have "good" gods and "bad" devils. You tend to only find this concept in the monotheistic religions that came after them.
Given the the Witcher universe draws very heavily from pre-christian pantheonic mythologies, I think it more likely that there are simply gods, of which gaunter is one. Which begs the question, are there more powerful deities than gaunter? Most likely. Are they "good?" well, no. Not really, in the same way Zeus or Odin weren't "good."

Yeah. Like, he causes a ghost-an incorporeal, non-physical being-to writhe and scream in agony, seemingly with no effort, significant motion or real 'trick' to it. He just.... *willed* him to suffer, and he did.
What in the HELL is the Unseen Elder gonna do?
Even if we assume the UE moves fast enough to stab/slash at O'Dimm's body-which he doesn't, because O'Dimm can control the flow of time-we have absolutely 0 reason to believe this would even BEGIN the process of harming O'Dimm.
The scholar says G.O'D has records of encounters going back *thousands* of years. That strongly indicates he's a Pre-Conjunction entity, which is terrifying in its own right.
At bare minimum, he's able to teleport, stop time, walk on air/manipulate gravity, and control the weather at will, and this isn't even accounting for his ability to grant wishes or inflict curses, seemingly of limitless complexity and flexibility, at will.
This isn't even a question of "Who would win", it's a question of "How long would O'Dimm torment the Elder before he gets bored?"

The whole (or the most of it) Heart of Stone story line is based on "The wedding" by Stanisław Wyspiański (1901) a polish drama describing the wedding of a noble man with a peasant girl in Bronowice, a part of today Kraków (Cracov). Thats the wedding part. Second inspiration was old folk tale about Twardowski, a man who fools a devil and make him his servant. Twardowski promises that he would meet the devil in Rome to pay for his service but he never intended to travel to Rome but after years, he was in travel. In the dark night he saw a light. It was an Inn. Then devil came back. And asked for his soul. He refused, but then he ask about the Inn name. Twardowski looked at the inscription on the door. The Inn was called Rome. Then devil took his soul and leaved his body on the moon. This expansion was very familiar to the polish community because we know the original story and then we saw the CDP adaptation.

Ah, there you go. Just made a comment about O'Dimm and I couldn't remember the name of this piece of folklore. But he was also inspired by another fairytale which was very familiar to the German community. The power to know his true name and his obsession with spoons is basically the character of Rumplestilskin. A miller claims his daughter could spin gold out of straw. So the King takes her and orders her to spin the gold overnight, or else she would die the next morning. There comes the devil, in some versions he flies in on a spoon, and offers her to do so for her if he gets her bracelet in return. Ofc they agree and the king encounters a room full of gold. He promises to marry the girl if she can pull it off a second time. So the next night the devil returns but this time, he demands her first child. She agrees. Years came and went but someday the devil returned to claim her eldest child. The royal family offers him any riches in the land but he wants the thing he is owed, the child. Seeing her tears he smirks and offers a new deal. If she can outwit him and guess his true name, then she can keep her child. She has 3 days to accomplish it. Later she sends her subjects to spy on the devil in his cave, where spoons hang everywhere from the ceiling, and the devil dances around a fire. As he dances, he sings about his true name, "how good is it, that no one knows, that my name is truly Rumplestilskin". Then they banish him by calling him out.
Oh and the name comes from Stephen King's the dark tower.

o´Dimm draws from too many legends, myths and characters to be truly pinned down, some inpsirations are more clear then others, his name coming down to God, o´Dimm is astoundingly close to Odin, who also frequently appears as a beggar among men to judge on their behaviour without them knowing and seal their fate based upon it, basically somewhat playing with them, while his demeanor is close to Loki (mischief and games that only he understands). The tongues he speaks and the way the books talked about him imply a Demon from any sort of Abrahamic religion, or possibly even the Devil himself. Twardowski btw. also drew from Gothes Faust. Its just a big tangly knot, which makes it all that easier to make him somewhat understandable yet deeply abstract. He just is Evil incarnate, cold, somewhat reasonable, yet also capable of the most random outbursts of senseless violence, sometimes even more so psychological then physical. There just is no absolute outplaying him, since he invented the game, cause in the end even his loss against geralt is barely one move on the chessboard of a match thats been going on for millenia.

The unseen elder hissed his defiance as gaunter o'dimm strolled through the entrance to his lair. In a blur of motion the elder rushed at o'dimm to strike him down, and as he swipes at where o'dimm's throat should be, he stares at his bloodless claws in confusion.
"My my, you are very fast I see" says gaunter as he admires the lair several feet behind where the elder is now standing.
The elder commands his brethren to his lair. "One as powerful as you must want for nothing" said o'dimm cheerfully, "you have total command over other vampires, strong enough to over power anyone who gets in your way. I bet there is nothing you could possibly want".
The elders brethren formed a cautious circle around o'dimm, hissing and snarling, some appearing in clouds of smoke.
"Just my peace" snarled the elder. "You have intruded on my solitude". A mischievous grin forms on gaunter's face and as he stares directly into the elders eyes, the circling vampires freeze. Some mid snarl, some still floating as puffs of smoke, all motionless. As gaunter begins to casually walk towards the elder, the immediate area around them darkens and the background fades away.
"Well then" says o'dimm, as the background begins to form again, replaced by a misty, desolate terrain that the elder doesn't recognise. "I may have a proposition for you".
The elder attacks, swiping furiously at where o'dimm stands, but for some reason this does nothing. Gaunter stands there as substantial as the mists around him, and chuckles as if at a personal joke when the elder stops.
"I'm a man of many skills, the mirror man some call me, and I have a proposition for you. What if I could give you all the peace and solitude that you could ever want? Asks gaunter. And again with his mischievous grin gaunter glances toward the moon, "or make you more powerful than you could ever imagine. I can make it a reality... for a small price"

Gaunter O' Dimm is almost for sure devil himself. Hearts of stone expansion is based on polish legend about Pan Twardowski (Mr. Twardowski), who was polish nobleman.
Pan Twardowski sign pact with devil, which said that devil can only take his soul in Rome. But eventually he end up in inn named Rome. Of course the devil used it and kidnapped Twardowski.
But Twardowski prayed and the devil lost him on the way and Twardowski found himself on the moon where he stays to this day.

What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object? This is a logical analysis of a philosophical question innit?
If we’re to take the rule that only a higher vampire can kill a higher vampire(which were by no means obligated to, since GoD appears to be the exception to most if not all rules) then GoD could theoretically turn himself into a higher vampire the kill theUE, but would that make him vulnerable to the same rule?

Dear xLetalis, since Heart Of Stone expansion is based on themes from a Polish legend called "Pan Twardowski" or "A Legend Of Pan Twardowski", I would definitely classify Gunter O'Dim as the devil himself.
The source material deals with a character of Pan Twardowski who made a deal with the devil and does everything in his power not to fulfil it as doing this would mean his death. There is even a moment when they meet in a tavern called "The Moon" to finalise the contract - this is reminiscent of what''s going on in the game.

O’Dimm is definitely an equivalent of our depiction of the devil cause his charakter & the whole dynamics between him and Olgierd is heavily inspired by the Polish legend about Pan Twardowski, in which a noble man sold his soul to the devil in exchange for magical powers. Thanks for all your work, really enjoying it!

I think O'dimm is actually an Ifrit/efreeti. Not the D&D version but the traditional folklore ones from the book Arabian Nights. You might have noticed how he looks middle eastern and the DLC has a middle eastern theme. Ifrits are basically evil Genies, they grant wishes and must follow the rules of the genie, but they grant wishes in the worst way possible - hence you need to be super clear with them. In the Disney Aladdin that comes from Arabian nights, Jafar is turned into an Ifrit and grants the wishes of Abismal by transporting him to the bottom of an ocean when he asks for a legendary sunken treasure.

    • @malchir4036

O'Dimm is clearly - the Devil himself. I mean THE devil. So, as a divine creature, he will definitely have no problem. Vampires are supernatural beings, but this is divine, in a way.
Clues about O'Dimm are everywhere... Grants wishes (which backfire on the one wishing them) and takes away one's soul, signs a contract, follows a certain set of rules... Those rules exist only because there is one and only one force more powerful than him. Plus, this story is inspired by a tale about the devil and a man trying to outplay him by saying that contract will be fulfilled once they meet in Rome, clearly having no intention of ever going to that city. Only to enter a tavern named Rome one day...
I find his name also a clue... Initials. That is a form of mocking and disrespecting the only force more powerful than him and is really in accordance to who he is. Or maybe a way of developers saying "The devil is the god for the entire Witcher universe". Which is plausible considering what it looks like and what creatures live there...

I know others have commented this but I'd also like to state that I'm pretty sure gaunter o'dimm only has rules that he "has" to play by due to him creating said rules for himself. If he wanted to he could break those rules. He likely "lives" (if you could call it that) by these rules because it's the only amusement he can get. He's immortal and has always existed so I would imagine being immortal gets pretty boring. I belive that weve not even come close to seeing his true power and anything weve seen him do is just his version of messing around and any time he "loses" it's because he created that possibility. The guy is OP AF lol.

Yeah, the Unseen is more like a powerful organism? Basically the vampire equivalent of a particularly old and powerful dragon? I’m pretty sure it doesn’t even need gaunter. Geralt survived him and has some basic information on him. With that information, I think it’s plausible that a considerable collaboration of mages that study him in depth for decades could make plans that can neutralize him. Without a vampire they can’t really kill him, but might likely find other ways to essentially seal him away somewhere or melt him into a huge cube of dimeritium?
Gaunter on the other hand is really not the type you can fight directly. Also, more importantly, you have have a group of mages studying him and making plans because he’d know and then show up like he did with the professor.

For me, the character in the Witcher IS another aspect of the same character, so although the Unseen Elder could possibly win a battle against Gaunter, he wouldn't be able to destroy him.
Also, you didn't mention the use of spoons and mirrors by Gaunter, which is linked to folklore concerning demons.
