Has a special place in my heart too. I worked nights, my flatmate was 2nd shift. Some days I would come home to a bunch of drunken passed out people on the floor, couch and even my bed. Turned this(or Slayer or Down) up to 11 and every person would leave, like quick!!
As a child of many problems, i wore saint anger around my neck, this song gave reassurance i was not alone. My world around me falling apart, never respected, always forced by authority to smile when there was nothing to smile about, this song told a story of mine, and im sure, plenty of others young mens lives.
I absolutely loved this video when I was 15, mtv would actually play videos most of the time back then, I’d get ready for school and this would come on, I’d be like this is fucking awesome! I didn’t realize they really filmed a video in San Quentin at the time, later found out they really did, and played a little concert for them. Crazy!
I love how this entire album is the definition of “Ow the Edge” but I don’t care. It’s definitely an album that you either love immediately or have to learn to love. Also sounds genuinely amazing live.
I'm definetly the last one. Had a few tracks I liked, but overall I hated that album. It took me almost a decade to understand the art behind that album and now I really love to listen to it, when I need a soundtrack, where I feel bad, lonely, angry and/or miserable in general.
This album came out the year I graduated high school... I hated it back then, it wasn't the Metallica we knew.... 40 years old, It's a struggle to get through the song without tearing up. Something I've come to realize, Growing older is hearing your music differently. This song fucking rages 🤘🤘🤘
This song is amazing. You can hear the sadness and anger in Hetfield's voice on every note. This song is one of my absolute favorites... So much emotion.

They have a long and varied career. Imo the period between 1991 and 2003 --Black Album, Load/Reload, S&M, and St. Anger was their creative zenith. So much variety yet soul and innovation behind everything they do. Still the case with the more recent albums, but they've since fallen into a bit of a familiar rhythm.
St.Anger is amazing when you listen to it when you're angry. And the Metallica boys did an awesome job imo. I don't know how to explain it, but the snare gives it an even more pissed off sound.
I agree, i wouldn't usually go for such a heavy snare sound but it's absolutely spot on for this particular effort. Just fits the tone of the song so well.
The snare sound is much longer and “shinier” or tinner/more sheet metal which is fighting with low heavy riff yet harmonizing with its brutality. I personally would like it just 10% less trashy but its still mastermind act
Not gonna sit here and say im a huge metallica fan,im not,but this song touched me in so many ways as a angry teenager always getting into some crazy shit, and every time i listened to this back then and now ,gives me some sort of peace, thanks metallica ❤
The energy and the atmosphere of this masterpiece is still just as powerful 20 years later (38 years old born in 1985). One of my personal favourites of Metallica. I always loved that trash can snare
Kirk: Lars let's use that snare we used to track the black album ! Lars: No way!, I'm playing a frying pan on this one. I love this album, though. It was something different, killer riffs.
My sister, brother in law and my mom all Dat around the dinner table listening to this. Half way through the song my mom literally had a seizure. She was on a winning streak not having a seizure for the longest period of time in years and she listened to this and had one. Thanks st anger
I don’t care if people hate this, but this album helps me go through a very tough and challenging time in my life. This album is not super polished, astonishing and does not even have a single guitar solo, but it feels… real. This album is raw and real Thank you Metallica❤️
This was the first song I've heard of Metallica. I was around 11 years old. Thought they were a nu metal kind of band and stayed away from them. Boy did I regret not looking up their other songs.
One of my old friends discovered Metallica mid 80's in Belgium when they played smaller venues / festivals ... I was blown away by their video's on Headbangers Ball Europe. Thanks Vanessa and Eric.
I like the whole album and it's stoner and nu metal elements. They tried something different there without sounding less aggressive. After St Anger, they just plagiarized their own music - pretty badly.
Hey, I know St Anger as an album gets mercilessly ripped to pieces but this song still stands up. 2003 was a strange time, and Metallica were just trying to fit in, while at the same time trying not to fall apart. I loved this song when it came out, still do, and it felt good to have something new from Metallica, even if it wasn't the best they can do.
Well said. Looking back, 2003 was indeed a strange time. Post-9/11, post-Attitude Era, and all these short-form musical artists changing the landscape. Still remember from the SKOM doc how the band had several arguments about how they were even supposed to _sound_ during that time.
Battery, Damage inc., Eye of the beholder, Harvester of sorrow, Dyers eve, Sad but true,...And justice for all, Master of puppets, Fight fire with fire, and Creeping death are all much heavier than snare ang- I mean St anger
@@StAnger-bw3gz I think Damage Inc. actually comes close. And while I enjoy most of the songs you mentioned more than St. Anger. I still think Anger has the heavier riff. It feels much more agressive and in your face than something like Master or Justice. Which are much more complex songs than St. Anger. But, you know, I think that much is obvious.
@@jevinday as far as I know, a huge part of the scènes are real. So, this in the tradition of Elvis "Jailhouse Rock", AC/DC "Jailbreak", The Blues Brothers and Slayer's trilogy video.
You gotta love how music brings people together. Black, Brown, and White inmates all going nuts and throwing “the horns” as the worlds biggest Heavy Metal band shows them love❤🤘
@@DeadAutumnHorrorStories yeah it seems the album was purposely made shit. Production and recording wise. We've seen Metallica projects before this album much clearer and cleaner. I highly doubt they just accidentally made it sound very "garage" for lack of a better term. Not the snare tho that was jus lars being lars lol.
@@SharpAsABricc I get what you're saying bit Lulu was supposed to be experimentation, I still don't know what a lead guitarist playing a record with no solos is supposed to do. And don't get me started on the snare.
Same haha, got into the band in early 2003. Gotta say though I was actually happy to hear this was among their worst stuff upon discovering it b/c I still enjoyed alot of it.. Like holy hell, if this was the WORST, how good was the BEST? St. Anger has since dropped to the bottom tier for me (though I'd say still better than Reload and easily Lulu), but it holds a special place in my heart, especially being a riff guy. I just wish they added a few solos, tightened up the garbage pale snare, and shortened some of the songs a bit. Then this actually could have been a decent album. I do still legit like Frantic, St. Anger, Dirty Window, and Some Kind of Monster as songs.
Like 4 or 5 years since this and i still don't get the problem with this album... This song is just pure feeling, you can hear it on every note. All the people with anger problems will understand.
that explains why I started to liked it recently lol ... well I liked the song but I cound't listen to it full... because it was so heavy for me, but now I enjoy it....

I'm definetly the last one.
Had a few tracks I liked, but overall I hated that album.
It took me almost a decade to understand the art behind that album and now I really love to listen to it, when I need a soundtrack, where I feel bad, lonely, angry and/or miserable in general.
they played dirty window live and it was awesome
This album came out the year I graduated high school... I hated it back then, it wasn't the Metallica we knew.... 40 years old, It's a struggle to get through the song without tearing up.

@@ronanv1 why tho? I know it actually throws off some people but for me high tuned snares in metal sound fucking brutal
The snare sound is much longer and “shinier” or tinner/more sheet metal which is fighting with low heavy riff yet harmonizing with its brutality. I personally would like it just 10% less trashy but its still mastermind act

I like the whole album and it's stoner and nu metal elements. They tried something different there without sounding less aggressive. After St Anger, they just plagiarized their own music - pretty badly.
Its my favorite Metallica song :D
Hey, I know St Anger as an album gets mercilessly ripped to pieces but this song still stands up. 2003 was a strange time, and Metallica were just trying to fit in, while at the same time trying not to fall apart. I loved this song when it came out, still do, and it felt good to have something new from Metallica, even if it wasn't the best they can do.
Yes- 2003 was a strange time.
Well said. Looking back, 2003 was indeed a strange time. Post-9/11, post-Attitude Era, and all these short-form musical artists changing the landscape. Still remember from the SKOM doc how the band had several arguments about how they were even supposed to _sound_ during that time.
I disagree, I think this choice is even more baffling in retrospect and it continues to age worse over time.
When I first heard this song I literally thought Lars was hitting a metal trash can
What if he was
Wrong its a thrash can
My friend played this entire song with a metal trashcan
my theory is that lars was been changed by Shawn Crahan
I thought people where exaggerating at first, but this Snareb sound is ungodly
You can say whatever you want about St. Anger. But the main riff is one of the heaviest riffs they ever wrote.
Hell yeah
Ok Serj
Main riff is great. It’s the rest of the song that’s an issue.
