I was at this game. This Miami team was fantastic, but it's astonishing how many players on this Pitt team that had long/productive careers as starters in the NFL. Bad coaching doomed Pitt in the mid-80's.
I remember this game. This was not bad coaching. This was a one-mad Pitt squad getting beat down by what could have been one of the great teams in the history of college football, had they won the national chip.....!
That Miami team was awesome. They should have easily won the national championship that Year. They turned the ball over seven times against Penn State in the national championship game. But yet only lost 14 to 10 with all those turnovers. One of the greatest teams to not win a national championship.
"ironhead" was ridiculous in this game. awesome performance. r.i.p. big man.
That, boys and girls, is the magical substance called Astro-Turf. It looks like a wet parking lot.
Ugly when it didn't rain, but uglier when it rained.

Back when both teams were still Division 1A independent schools.

+John Manning It's amazing how history repeats itself; 2002 Miami turned the ball over many times in the title game and nearly won in OT.
+Gaucho97 Got screwed is more like it.
Gaucho97 It was the refs
Allegedly the mob had gotten to Testaverde
I covered the game for the Pitt News. Was shocked at how small Jimmy Johnson was. Gottfried was a fine recruiter - except for QBs and WRs.....
Really important positions not to be good at recruiting
This pitt Team with all that talent went 5-5-1. Both gottfried and Fazio were great Recruiting guys but poor HC.
Gotta love those polycarbonate helmets.
Testaverde was absolutely great! He had one really bad game mostly through play calling.
Was that the 1987 Penn St Fiesta Bowl game where Miami could have won a NC or the 1986 Tennessee Sugar Bowl game where Miami could have won a NC?
Yes
You could see his weaknesses in college. Anytime there was pressure or confusion by coverage he flopped like a dying fish.
