Always loved the sound of these-that's never been the issue 👀 but the new color + the binding + f-hole + improved control layout. This is doing it for me!
@@JonnyDibble Sounds awesome! I would love to hear also the danelectro 59dc bass, maybe the short scale compared with the long one... would be awesome.
The full 24 frets on a shortscale, as well as the cutaway body for easy access to the highest frets, is a huge selling point that Danelectro has a virtual monopoly on. I think the black solid body version is pretty cool, personally. Wouldn't play it at a metal show, but it has a vibe to it.
It gives very alt-rock or like jam band vibes to me. On the contrary though, playing it at a metal show could be a pretty unique vibe as well. Loathe and Sleep Token were able to make Jazzmasters and Gretschs "metal" after all.
@@maxonmendel5757 He does, though his is a standard 25.5” scale and very custom with EMGs and just a volume knob + pickup selector. The guitarist from Loathe uses a baritone Jazzmaster that’s 30” scale but also completely stock with the multi-way switches that have that chrome plate around them.
We need more Danelectro reviews! their basses are wacky and different but imo they have a lot of charm and redeemable qualities, also they are very comfortable to play
I have recently received this bass on a whim and I love it. I was really going to return it because I wasn't sold on it by the guys at Sweetwater but I love it!! Very punchy and takes effects well!!
this is such an awesome bass, defo one that stands out in both sound and looks. im not sure if you take bass suggestions, but another awesome bass which shares the short scale and semi hollow category is the Hagstrom viking, and i dont see it demo'd nearly enough. loved your playing here !!

Great work as always Jonny o7 Edit: Also, this talking between playing thing that you're doing rn is something I'm really digging. Brings more of YOU into it and I feel that makes the review a lot more personal and interesting.
@@JonnyDibbleI meant to add that like you I was always grossed out by DE Longhorns. Now your video has changed my entire mindset on them. They are fascinating. That red finish really helps ease me into liking the body shape more. That "saddless" bridge though😢😂
Love them .. have owned 3 over the last 15 years or so ( and sold 2 at gigs when people said they just had to have one ) of note , John Entwistle used one , but kept breaking the strings so gave up on them .. and of course it’s the Bass being played in “ Radar Love “ by Golden Earring “ 😎🎵🎶
I recently played a Danelectro Dano long scale bass and was blown away by the unique sound and playability. In fact while playing it I was certain it must be a short scale because of how easy it felt but it wasn't.
I picked up a Copper Burst at NAMM about 6 years ago and the Red Hot this past 2024 NAMM. I absolutely love these basses . . . I find the pickups in the Red version to be a bit 'hotter'. Just so much fun to play. The bridge can be a pain but I really like the tone of the rosewood saddle. I also have a Hodad Danelectro bass that I converted to a Piccolo bass . . . also very cool.
If I were to buy that bass, I would change the tuners, the bridge and the nut. Tusq makes a zero fret nut that would go perfect with that bass and I'd have a zero fret bass. I would choose the small bass tuning machines and that bridge would get a hipshot gibson style bridge.
It's sad how people sleep on Danelectro instruments. They have a unique sound you're not gonna find in any other instrument, just like Rickenbacker and Grestch. There's also a guitar version of this and in 1962, there was the Guitarlin, which was the Longhorn guitar but with 32 frets.
I had a black one. The shape is cool. Also having 24 frets for solos. But the bridge is not so good. I had also problems in the mix depending on the genre. Perhaps having two single coils or a split coil would be nice. Just to have regular sounds in the mix and beeing save. Playing re-aranged by Limp Biskit was nice. The natural EQ of the bass was perfect for the song.
Jonny b Goode Baby Yeah! I think this bass is smashing and I dig the colors. Sounds good enough for classic rock & blues, so what is not to like - and it’s light.
I didn’t even see this review but a couple of days ago I bought the Fifty Niner Semi Hollow Bass. The double neck is enticing but I hope in the future they make a double neck bass six string.
Must have missed this video (although I was away). First thoughts ...erh, emmm, urrgh, not sure, can't get over the looks and not keen on the gloss neck BUT I really like the sounds ...and it's light.
What a cool bass! I think it would benefit from a decent set of flatwounds ;-) On a completely different subject - what camera setup do you use? Your video quality is outstanding!
Those tiny bass machine heads do bother me, but God the sound is so damn good! Any possibility of reviewing the Dano Fifty Niner bass? I wish Zzounds had this one for sale. Awesome review man, and some hilarious edits!
Good job! Please review also the 59dc version! it's available in both long and short scale, could be a nice comparison. And there aren't many demos of them on youtube :)
Surprisingly, for everything that’s wrong with this bass… It’s not the tone! The first time I “watched” this video, I only heard it. I wasn’t looking at the screen. I had it on whilst driving. It sounds great in many of your examples. Kinda “Swiss Army” ish. I own a couple Danelectro instruments, and they are far more durable, than they look and feel. Also, having a Longhorn as your primary bass? Could be a hell of a flex! Obviously, this is just my opinion. Great review Jonny. Cheers
I've been back and forth with it, just as I did with the DanElectro '59 Plus when I was trying guitar. It has some great tones, but I'm trying not to GAS too hard over this one.
2:12 The word I use for these sorts of things is "cugly" - so ugly it's cool. However when something's just so insanely ugly - like that body shape - I say it's "FUGLY", which I'm sure you can figure out. 🤣 It sounds good tho!
. I just can't with the short-scale basses. Horrible string tension, even with light gauges. Meh tone/sustain and tiny fret spacing for someone with big hands. All subjective, but a big no for me (unless it's a Bass XI).
Don’t quit your day job.
