"Sometimes, I feel discriminated against, but it does not make me angry. It merely astonishes me. How can any deny themselves the pleasure of my company?" ~ Zora Neale Hurston (1891-1960), American writer and anthropologist
Thank you for discussing this book, banned or not. I may have read it in high school, it's been awhile. But, I remember being captivated by the characters and the beauty of her writing. Definitely time for a revisit. Why people are so fearful and suspect of learning these days, baffles me. How can expanding you horizons do anything but help ground the beliefs/knowledge previously gained, adding to experience and deepening understanding, even if it's, "no, that's not for me." I'm guessing that a lot of this fear us also based in "othering," something we need to stop in this country. I grew up in a reading household, where I wasn't limited by author or genre. I was fortunate enough to have enthusiastic teachers who introduced many different authors and types of literature from many backgrounds and periods. This enriched my educational experience, as well as my life. I only want others, students of today, to have the same opportunities. 💜🌎🍀
I have to find my copy, but I can't remember if it's hard copy or digital. Also, about half of my library was lost a number of years ago, so this will be an adventure. However, I believe worth the time. 🍀✌️😎
One thing I have learned in the 61 years since I turned 10 is this: If you don't love yourself you will never survive the traumas of life and thrive as you. Now, today I have learned about something new. An author that I have NEVER heard of in my 71 years that I am going to learn about through her writings. I have just ordered this book. I love books. If I don't have a stack of books waiting to be read I get uneasy. I love books because I am able to step outside of this world and inside the stories, whether fiction or fact, and see what's there, and learn. Both fiction and fact can teach you something if you are willing to see it, hear it, and understand it. Thank you.
Today I put an older book on watchlist, because it was mentioned by a UA-cam commenter. I occasionally read books discussed online, and it enriches my life. I recommend that to your audience as well. I appreciate you.
I think it's time to focus on our commonalities vs anything that may create more division and separateness.. there is much we can learn from our collective humanness 😎 especially from our differences in race and culture. We are all human, in this boat together as one ❤️ yes, acknowledge uniqueness but we are not better or less than anyone
@@reneem3895 I have an opinion. So what you are saying is that if what someone writes in a book offends someone, it should not be published simply to spare someone's feelings? How about not buying the book? This is true. There seems to be too many that go out of their way to reject this fact. Wonder why that is?!? The mere term diversity triggers them.
