First time heard it in watching Ultravox in Warsaw PL 86'. In the end of "Cold War" time lyrics had way more power - that's how we felt it on the other side of Iron curtain. That was the last song of that gig.
When I was a boy there's a dream that I had That a war if it's fought was for good against bad And I woke up to find that the world had gone mad And we'd all fall down And I feel like a child again sitting observing You're toying with power, your fingers are burning You're pushing so hard that the worms won't be turning We'll all fall down While you try to pretend you're a god upon high With your party ideals and your squeaky clean lies When it comes to the crunch you're not smarter than I And we'll all fall down If it's colour or creed or your old time religion Well fighting for that shows a pure lack of vision The fight that we strive is the fight to survive And we'll all fall down Well look in the mirror and what do you see An American, Russian, a soldier or me When you've all pressed the buttons just where will you be When we all fall down It gets harder to see just what future's in store for us Hard to see through all the wool you pull over us Words that you give are just words to console us We'll all fall down And what will you do when you've pulled the release When the sound of the thunder has drowned out the pleas Cos after all that was your idea of peace When we all fall down No sun for a world that once stood so tall No wind's going to blow and no rain's going to fall No flowers for graves, in fact no graves at all When we all fall down
Great song , great playing both Ultravox & The Chieftains ...aand, great drums by Mark Brzezicki, so nice and gentle crescendo towards the end of the song!
A very special track in Ultravox's repertoire. I've always loved this track featuring the legendary Chieftains. Magnificent music, beautiful heartfelt lyrics and singing from Midge Ure, with a splendid arrangement and honest performance. It announced in some way some music that Midge would later record on his solo albums, especially "Breathe". It sends shivers down my spine each time since I first bought the album, over 35 years ago. This is one of the most touching anti-war songs I've ever heard. This song should be world-famous - really ! "U-Vox" was leaning into different directions and used a more organic sound on a good half of the songs - which was not a bad thing, even though I don't like everything on it.
Not sure this is a song to listen to during the coronavirus lockdown! ......but hey ho......they weren't know back in 86! stil a good song, but can't get over how completely different it is from their stuff earlier in the 80s. This is proper folk music.
yes i agree tracey can still remember when it came out still sounds great .................. paddy maloney passed away recently man on the tin whistle.................. founder of the cheiftains
So this is a song about 'Nuclear Apocalypse' (after America has pressed the 'red' button). What makes it so clever is that it's set to a celtic folk sound. This is by far the best track on their 'U-Vox' album. The other tracks on the album never quite hit the heights this one manages to.
@@derekporter7658 'Technically' often means 'Not actually'. By now many of us have multiple identities and places of origin...Currie being a Scot born in Huddersfield. Celtic yes, but other things as well.

When you try to pretend you're a God upon high, with your party ideals and your squeaky clean lies. When it comes to the crunch you're no smarter than I. So true. Midge, your lyrics are genius, not like today's 'music'. Let's all (I'm English) just watch and hold our breath. 🙄
Great song. In times when German politicians want to deliver German tanks to a war zone, when the mass media demand and call for even more, this song spontaneously came to mind. I am afraid of this development. What has become of "Never again war"?
Ich bin Deutsche und fassungslos was hier mit unserem Land geschieht. Es wird immer schlimmer und wir sind so machtlos. Dieses Lied drückt so unendlich viel über diese Zeit aus und ist doch so zeitlos
yep...still think this is a very relevant song that NEEDS to be heard. share with everyone you know. the planet is screaming at us,. but the powers ignore it....
I bought this album upon its release in 1986, then Midge Ure's solo album Answers the following year...and this track, along with that album was a sign of things to come, and also what Ultravox would have sounded like had the band remained together. In fact, I see Midge's solo work as a natural progression.
I see your point Everton but to me Midges solo work never really sounded like Ultravox though the odd track did get near and all his albums had some outstanding tracks and as a stand alone artist he did scale the heights but not as commercially as Ultravox which must have irked him no end.
This song was a major contributor to the end of Ultravox back then. Hated it the 1st time I heard it and funnily enough still hate it now. MU should have stuck it on one of his CD/Albums and kept it a million miles away from Ultravox .....

one of the best things about 50 years old,is the fact that i lived my teenage years in the 80's taht is priceless and i am grateful !!!
I ve got same ,champ..im 51..and remember this time..now we re so close again..when we all fall down...all best from Poland..

Everyone should listen to this wonderful song, getting chills always.

When I was a boy there's a dream that I had
That a war if it's fought was for good against bad
And I woke up to find that the world had gone mad
And we'd all fall down
And I feel like a child again sitting observing
You're toying with power, your fingers are burning
You're pushing so hard that the worms won't be turning
We'll all fall down
While you try to pretend you're a god upon high
With your party ideals and your squeaky clean lies
When it comes to the crunch you're not smarter than I
And we'll all fall down
If it's colour or creed or your old time religion
Well fighting for that shows a pure lack of vision
The fight that we strive is the fight to survive
And we'll all fall down
Well look in the mirror and what do you see
An American, Russian, a soldier or me
When you've all pressed the buttons just where will you be
When we all fall down
It gets harder to see just what future's in store for us
Hard to see through all the wool you pull over us
Words that you give are just words to console us
We'll all fall down
And what will you do when you've pulled the release
When the sound of the thunder has drowned out the pleas
Cos after all that was your idea of peace
When we all fall down
No sun for a world that once stood so tall
No wind's going to blow and no rain's going to fall
No flowers for graves, in fact no graves at all
When we all fall down
Thanks!!
Ultravox and the amazing irish traditional music group the chieftains. I love this song .

It was so long ago, but the song fits right into this bad time today.
Very prophetic (!)
Many of the songs of that time haven't lost their topicality...
And quite a few of even older songs (60s and 70s) still fit in well.
this is amazing, ultravox is the best band ever !
I hadn’t heard this song before, but I fell in love right now.💗

Timeless classic.
Wasn't it to prove that United We Stand, Divided We Fall...?✌️🏻
