Miss these trains... A big part of my childhood was riding on these trains with my grandpa who worked in the railroad repair industry under many different operators for 40+ years. Always rode on the Alamein line back when it was just Comeng and Hitachi's. My first time seeing one in 10+ years ago was last Friday when I went by Newport Workshops to take a video and saw them just sitting there. Brought back so many memories...
same bro. when i was kid, i sometimes caught hitachis whenever i used to go out to the city with my dad on the train, mainly from Ashburton, although i sometimes caught one from Glen Iris. I also remember how during those times, i'd wonder whether i'd get an x'trapolis, comeng or hitachi, back when comengs still ran on the burnley lines. i loved the hitachi's because of their uniqueness. man i hope one gets preserved for heritage tours
Man i have a lot of fond memories of the hitachi trains. I grew up during the last years of connex operations before metro took over, and i vividly recall catching them sometimes from Ashburton on the Alamein line, as well as from Glen Iris on the Glen Waverley line whenever i went out to the city with my dad. The hitachi's were, and still are, my favourite Melbourne EMU train.
I remember catching a Hitachi train on the South Morang line (Now Mernda line) back in 2017. I miss these trains. I also miss when we used to have regular Comeng trains on the Mernda line. I remember catching one in 2017 and then they disappeared from the Clifton Hill group entirely
Hitachi wouldn't have been 2017, they were retired in 2013. Must have been in 2012 or before. I agree with you on the lack of Comeng's on the Burnley/Clifton Hill group's though
Moved to Melbourne long after the Hitachis were retired... wish I could have had the pleasure of catching one. The next generation of acquired Melbournians are going to be saying the same thing about Comengs I suppose.
Looks like one of the workshops in Newport are working to restore a full set to run tours. I hope they’re successful I’d cry if it got to ride one again.
I really think I caught one of these like 12 years ago to Belgrave but I can’t remember. I vaguely remember the wood grain bits and it being so damn hot but that’s about it.
One of the major differences between the Comeng and the Hitachi is that the Hitachi's have silent Japanese motors. If you were lucky enough, you could hear them. They pretty much sounded like the B Class Trams. While the Comeng's have louder, more noticeable and more unique motors. The Comeng motors were built by GEC. EDIT: These trains were very similar to the Comeng, even in the Vicrail/Met Comengs, they were very similar in a lot of ways.
Check out this video for a growling Comeng motor: ua-cam.com/video/SeWHiQvuq8k/v-deo.html And check out this video for a sound of the hardly heard Hitachi motor: ua-cam.com/video/du3IsdxEasQ/v-deo.html&ab_channel=MrJuzz1992
Well at least they have have been taken care of, even if there were still all rusty and had that old Hillside/Bayside paint job i would still like them, but only because these train are so close to there original appearance, the Comeng trains are so changed from there original appearances, even from there Connex days
That would never have happened, they were supposed to be retired by the time the Commonwealth Games came around in 2006 and most of them were, however what you see in this video is one of the 7 sets that were kept in service until 2013, due to a huge increase in patronage. It was never going to be a long term thing, only until they brought more trains and they brought 7 more in 2013 so they were no longer needed. For them to get the PTV decals would have mean't a refurbishment, and that was never going to happen as they did not plan on keeping them around long term.
They got rid of them because Comeng trains had air conditioning so they didn’t need opening windows. The Z Class tram still has similar openable windows
lol it wud be nice if the trains got the full metro livery though instead of just metro stickers, coz theyve got some like flat parts around the windows...
Daniel Corrales most of it could of been done, but the trains probably would never get passenger air conditioning because I believe the roof isn’t strong enough to hold the Vent for the air conditioning system. The hitachis would need cameras, modern controls (more reliable ones then the old ones) help buttons, announcements and screens and possibly LED destinations to keep running through this period of time. Even so I think that it was their time to go when they were withdrawn (retired). It would also mean loads of money spent on all the upgrades.
Noo hitachis in when it’s PTV only the met and m train and 9 connex and metro I like the Hitachi’s noooooo 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 4:07

best seats in the fleet

You missed out on those absolutely beautifully cushioned seats my friend.

Oh the memories 😢❤
When the trains would stop and you’d have to look out the window to see what station you were at 🥲
Door alarm sound is like the same as the Comeg train door alarm sounds.

These were my favourite trains. Just out of curiosity, what was the burning smell that I could always smell?
The brake blocks, they get hot when you're coming into a station and you can smell them because the windows are open.
Having the pantograph at the front looks really daggy.
same here MelbourneTransport Gunzel

@@sandrapetersen5093 no lmao
Why cant they just keep those nice silver rattlers on the tracks
or even keep one running around the network
Because they are old.
@@mjosiah1 that and the lack of aircon, PID's, help buttons etc would not have made them popular in this day and age
@@aidanthomas2510there is something called “refurbishment”
These trains were retired in 2014 according to Wikipedia
We know bruv
They last ran in revenue service towards the end of 2013, however the retirement tour was held in 2014 that's why it says that on Wikipedia.
I wish they had Hitchai with PTV 4:57

When were the comengs made?
MajesticKeldeo TM in between 1981 and 1989
I think they got rid of the opening windows on trains for obvious reasons.

They Entered Service in 1981 to 1989
@TrickyMario7654 The Silvers entered service in December 1972. The last units to be built were in 1981.
