He really was lost wasn't he, he lost all those battles cause he was lost in his past, not knowing what to do in the future because he doubting his capability to be trusted. Realize that he went from badass that loses a lot, to badass that wins a lot battle after he cleared things up with his father. Then we went to badass that's Hokage and wins like every battle after he cleared it up with everyone, battling Obito and gaining his acceptance, making the Rin incident less painful, and seeing Minato again. And then also know that Itachi's so called outrage was really a mission, so he couldn't blame himself.

That fight between obito and kakashi was one of the best but saddest fight scenes in the entire naruto series..:(

My favourites: itachi, neji, sasuke, kakashi, gaara and lee because he just never gave up no matter how talentless he was and taught me that hard work beats talent (sorry naruto ur not my fav)
