  • The 2020 election is nearing, and with that comes the caucuses and primary elections. But what’s the difference? And what role does Iowa play in this process?

    There are nearly two dozen hopefuls running in the 2020 election, each vying to become the next president. The race to the White House begins sooner than you think. Although the general election is still over a year away, candidates are zig-zagging across the country trying to win the hearts of voters for the primary election, which will determine who will be the Democratic and Republican nominee.
    The primary election begins early next year, with the start of the Iowa first-in-the-nation caucuses on Feb. 3, 2020.

      It's just two different ways of picking a candidate. Basically, a caucus just involves extra steps and even actual discussion with other people. Basically.

      The problem is all of this is required to choose who gets to be on the ballot. You can write in someones name if you want, but not enough people would do that to elect anyone on a national election. In Canada we have 338 Ridings for our MPs, the total candidate count if I got this right is 2145. In a few ridings the candidate count was 11. Our prime minister won his riding against 10 others. Canada only has 37 Million people and 13 Provinces/Territories. Would you prefer a ballot with 1000+ entries for your president?

      @@YellingSilently so before someone can start in an election he/she needs to have x signatures from people, after that he/she counts as nominee. Is it that hard to make? Eu has that already

      @@JAKE-ng8yr Does the EU have a elected position like the president though? Is there a position that every person in the union votes for a single person? There is nothing like that in Canada.

    In primaries do they do rank choice voting or is it simply one vote and those who don't get 15% simply don't have those votes allocated to another candidate

    • @RickJaeger
      @RickJaeger 4 місяці тому

      The most accurate answer would be, "it depends on the state." However, generally speaking, I think I'm safe in saying that practically all primaries use one-voter-one-vote systems. In California and Lousiana, the primary is a "jungle primary" where all state candidates from all parties are put on one big ballot, and then the Top Two vote-getters go on to be the final choice in the general election. It also varies by party and by state for national candidates, but for both Democrats and Republicans, most state primaries allot delegates proportionately (as opposed to winner-take-all).

    When the caucus system was created, there was no internet like today, so it made sense to have a caucus debate, which was a face-to-face debate. It was Engineering that changed the dynamics of face-to-face debate with the creation of the internet and networks. In this virtual environment, at a distance, people debate intensely about politics even in times outside elections. The US electoral system did not keep up with this technological revolution, brought about by Engineering, as it still maintains the in-person caucus debate within the electoral system today almost like a museum piece, outdated and useful in other times. We have to understand that it is not easy for the human sciences to keep up with the evolutionary frenzy of the exact sciences.

    The "will of the people" is what matters! The candidate with the most votes should win because that candidate represents what the "MAJORITY OF THE PEOPLE" want and anything except the will of the people is not a democracy. Anything that changes that scenario is not the will of the people and is likely just a tool to put a candidate in place that is not the will of the people! Don't be fooled!

      Exactly. And a MASS MAJORITY of people don't know how the voting system works.
      Nationwide, 41% of voters describe themselves as independents, outstripping Republicans and Democrats both at 28%.
      Yet, in many states around the country, this growing faction is systematically disenfranchised in primary elections.
