The last 30 years I've been listening to a few piano records, 3 of them I never get tired to listen. Keith Jarrett Koln concert, Maria João Pires Noctures of Chopin, Rachmaninov 2nd and 3rd concerts, and now this absolute gem of a concert with all my favorite Duke Ellington songs will enter my personal shrine of piano records. I honestly hope I have the pleasure of listening to Michel playing this concert for another 30 years. The mp3 with this concert is safely stored on my cell phone and computer so I will never lose this one. What a gem. Merci beacoup monsieur Michel Petrucciani!
... Quel musicien! Il conduit chaque note au rang de symphonie et toutes ces symphonies se coordonnent dans une immense mélodie tout en jazz. ... Quel génie ! ...
1:12 My Funny Valentine (Rodgers & Hart) 7:13 Les Feuilles Mortes (Prévert-Kosma) 14:45 Take the A Train (Strayhorn) 21:00 In A Sentimental Mood (Ellington) 28:15 C Jam Blues (Ellington) (I Mean You by Monk is quoted) 34:16 Hidden Joy (Petrucciani) 41:04 Caravan (Tizol & Ellington) 49:18 Satin Doll (Ellington & Strayhorn) 57:10 Round Midnight (Monk) (Les Moulins de Mon Coeur by Legrand is quoted)
I hear you brother...I've heard him play Round Midnight probably three or four times, and this version is just mind boggling. He's doing so many beautiful things stylistically, and reharmonizing on the fly, just amazing stuff. That Windmills of Your Mind quote that starts at 1:01:16-he makes it work so seamlessly with the rest of it. So lucky to have this to listen to!
Haven't watched the whole concert yet but I gotta say, coming onstage and just RIPPING into "My Funny Valentine" and then taking off your jacket as you finish the song is incredible showmanship!! Edit: watched it straight through and wow. Also, closing the lid while the last notes are still reverberating is just *chef's kiss*.
and the moments he quotes Duke's playing are inserted like pearls, in an incredible hommage. Those chords at the end quoting Duke give me the chills...
Michel Petrucciani & Oscar Peterson were in their own world as master musicians....many other pianists were good & some were great, but nowhere near these two....Caravan leaves one gasping for air its so insanely brilliant.....
This is ridiculous !!! Saying that Tatum, Powell, Waller, Hines, Garner, Monk, Jamal, Jones, Evans, Ellington were just good is one of the most stupid thing I've ever heard !
I assume that you were aware that it is Bill Evans who holds the seat above them all in a whole category or only Bill and his piano. I can hear in Michel's playing he clearly knew of Bill Evans who also left far too soon. Listen to ALONE - just Bill Evans and his piano and you will understand. "Never Let Me Go" is nearly 15 minutes of pure genius playing - Bills doing anything and everything with the piano until there was o more to do with the song. Genius.
@@maureen7746 It seems you don't know very much about jazz piano and you would be advised to study a little more the others geniuses before saying nonsense ...as if jazz piano was beginning with Evans and Petrucciani...without the guys I mentioned above, they wouldn't even exist...
@@Laurenzatto54 so true, and also Lennie Tristano. Petrucciani 's piano playing style is kind of a cross between Faure, Chopin and Peterson, but in a totally distinct manner.

Well said. ❤
I have approximately 700 vinyl records, about 100 are jazz, but nothing from him.
I do have 3 CDs of Petrucciano's work with Steve Gadd on drums
and Vitous on Bass I believe.

This should tought in music schools. Gives a perspective immediately.
This speaks so profoundly to the soul, love every bit of his playing
The neighbours must think I'm crazy shouting 'GOD DAMN' every couple minutes
Oh.. yes ! Aaaah yes ! Ooooh yes ! 😂❤❤❤
I see you. when I listen to this I get that same feeling every couple minutes...
Devastating performance. Brilliant

@@JazzGREEN Thank you for posting, one of his best filmed concert !
Thanks, CovertKeller.
There is another quote in Round Midnight: The Windmills Of Your Mind. The composer, Michel Legrand, passed away last week. RIP.
@@JohnnyParty Yes, thank you. Legrand was certainly great. The Demy soundtracks and the Legrand Jazz album I go back to regularly.
I am flabbergasted.
If this version of Round Midnight doesn't bring you to tears, you just aren't getting it man!
