Trompowsky Attack - Standard chess #36

  • I played a standard chess game as black with time controls set at 15 minutes with a 2 second increment. The opening played was the Trompowsky Attack. How to react to 2. Bg5? There are aggressive ideas connected with c5 and Qb6 to target the b2 soft spot, however black opts for a modest approach that does not allow a minor piece imbalance with Bxf6. Early play appears tame enough, however white applies some quick pressure before black can castle. Observe how a seemingly natural opening move can be flawed. It's a pawn plus versus the bishop pair and more active pieces in this tightly contested endgame.

    My favorite aspect of your videos is how you clearly vocalize *how* you're thinking. There's a big difference, for me, between studying chess and being privy to a strong player's thoughts. So thank you for elaborating on these interesting board/piece positions, and especially on what it means to you as you play the game.

    I really like that, unlike most chess youtube people, Jerry doesn't behave like a child when someone plays well (even if it is engine level). He just accepts it, instead of whining and crying engine.
    I really like that :)

      The moves he played and the tactics he employed corroborated closely with stockfish. But mostly because his moves were really rigid. For example, on move 51 he didn't take the pawn. He was low on time but still allowed for a loose pawn to go ahead. This either means, in the couple of seconds he took to make the move he had already calculated that he can deliver a check mate no matter what before the anymore promoted queen causes an issue. OR he is using an engine.

    33:17 he took 5 seconds to capture the bishop , this is categorically engine.

    Even if it was against an engine, that was a great game. I got a lot out of watching Jerry play and analyze the game. I think that knowing that it was against an engine would have changed Jerry's point of view and the tactics that he might have tried to employ. He might not have taken on the game at all... A lot of people seem to be getting stuck on the possibility that the opponent was an engine. Although it's less likely than him being an engine considering the circumstances, it's also possible that he used an engine to train and study, and has a strong grasp of endgame play. For example, I've generated about 120 games using stockfish up to depth 50 over a 2 month period, at a rate of 2 per day, for the Indian defenses, and explored possible wrong moves and associated tactics as well. I'm fairly sure I have a high rated player's level of understanding about those openings and the associated structures now, and I feel like a lot of what I've learned is transferable to other positions, as well. Still, I probably have enormous holes for king's pawn openings and stuff like the English.
    Considering that phanb18 was playing white and it was a fairly uncommon opening, I'm willing to believe he put a lot of preparation into it. But even if that wasn't the case, Jerry always takes the right attitude towards the game when he plays, which makes him a joy to listen to and learn from. :D

    It's interesting to watch how time pressure plays an issue here. Not sure that Jerry would've played ...a6 or ...Be7 given more time on the clock. Also amazed at how well Jerry plays the ending under time pressure.

  • @jamesklimt
    @jamesklimt 7 років тому +6

    I do like learning from standard time control games, I really do. And lichess is really quick with banning cheaters (this guy has already had his account closed). However, is there possibly another website where you could find a more reputable opponent? It is so easy to create throwaway accounts on lichess. It just disappoints me to watch these player vs. engine games.

    • @jamesklimt
      @jamesklimt 7 років тому

      I know ICC costs money, and I have never personally used it myself, but I feel like the cheaters are much harder to come by watching others play on it. Just my two cents. Anyways, keep up the good work, thanks for the content :D

      When I clicked on the link in the description, right underneath "15+2 - Classical - Rated" It says 1/10/2016. So the game was played in January of this year. Unless the order is D/M/Y Which would be October 1st, but in the states we use M/D/Y. At this moment in time, I'm not sure which lichess uses.

    Good game, and even better analysis. Also, this is just a thought, in the computer analysis, your opponent had no inaccuracies, mistakes, and blunders; it is kind of suspicious. Some might argue that he is using an engine, but he was kind of quick to move in the end game, for him to be using an engine. There is also a possibility that he is that good of a player. For example, John Bartholomew is one the best /quick players there are. So I guess it is possible for someone to be that good and quick. What do you guys think.

    I wouldn't even care if it was a computer or not, id still judge it as a human, my only concern is that im playing a strong opponent, if whatevers on the other side of that board is strong than lets get it. I see the "opponent" as the style of the player itself not the actual player and that im playing the board(dont know if that makes sense lol). And if my opponents pride is so low that he has to use an engine to let him win, then that's his concern.

      It kinds works but the black Q still gets to come across and will take the E and maybe the F pawns (depending on whether the Bishop is used to retake the C pawn). Black will have the black Bishop and White the Knight plus a pawn. Also Black will have her Queen at E6 and Black can't castle.
