Great job with the cleaning. I pick up my '15 klr Thursday. It has a 17t and I'll probably drop to 16t for highway riding.

I played around with the gear ratios a bunch in my 30k miles on my KLR. I settled on the stock gearing of 15/43 as being the best for me.

Great info my friend. I will try on my 08 a lower front sprocket, one tooth less, instead of increment the rear one. I might achieve more torque and yet sacrificing speed. We'll see.🤙

Love this! Getting ready to change on my gen 1 and this helps. Next video test a 17 tooth sprocket on front and see if that helps :). I also ride 99 percent pavement so again this def helps.
You think a 16 and 41 would help rpm’s to mph even better?

16/41 combo would most likely be ideal for my goal of reaching 55mph at about 3500 rpms. It's just a challenge trying to find a 41 tooth rear sprocket and one that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. 53mph with my new 16/42 setup is good enough for me...there's plenty of sprockets to be found around $25 on eBay. A 17 tooth front sprocket requires a bit of modifications to the counter shaft cover to allow clearance. I didn't want to mess with it or even run the risk of chewing up my neutral sending unit wires down there.
You also need to be mindful of gearing the bike too high and causing "lugging" condition. 17/42 ratio would be great for highway use at 4k+rpms but riding at 55mph backroads, I wouldn't want to be riding in that high of a gear around 3k rpms. Just a thought.

I suspect my 05 has the same gearing I can hit 50mph in 3rd at 4500rpm I suspect at 70mph I'll be at 4500rpm in 5th but haven't tested yet

Where did you get the nut you were using on the front sprocket
