Welcome to a backcountry flying experience in Utah! Quick 2 day trip, but we covered some ground anyway! Great flying in Utah!
Watch out for wires extending across some of those canyons! In about 1956 I "saved" two guys that had hit wires in a piper. They had crashed onto a sand/silt bar and the plane was burning. I saw the tail thru the flames and told my Dad, who stopped and yelled to them. We went back to Moab and told the police then went back out to show them where the accident was. Green River.
When I look at the miserable remnants of trails around that desolate Happy Canyon air strip (and all over the entire region), I'm staggered by the efforts those post WW2 uranium prospectors/miners went to in search of that history changing element... That Green River sandbar part was fantastic, thanks again.
Todd... excellent in all regards. Thanks for taking us along!
MAN!
I lived for 2--3 years in Utah.
bought my 1st motorcycle there;
[a 500cc 4-stroke : small/nimble]
& those planes are killin me :
"aero-cycles"!
...get one of those bi-planes
& gimme a call.
"Ah, my friends at th prison
they ask unto me
'how good...how good
does it feel to be free?'
And I answer them
most-mysteriously
'Are birds free
from th chains of th sky-way?' "
Bob Dylan
This right here is my dream. Bush flying in Utah. Thank you!
"Well folks, this does not suck." ...an epic understatement. Truly awe inspiring.
I have to wonder why it took me so long to find this YT channel. The videography, audio combination of in-flight sounds, music, and voice over, and of course flying locations are truly amazing. The good thing is I have lots of new to me videos to watch. Thank You for putting in the editing time and effort to bring these to us.
Thank you Steve!!! Glad you are here 👍🏼
Cool vid! Nice plane. Awesome place to fly.
Thanks for this epic beautiful adventure !!!!!!!!!!
That turbo sounds brilliant :)
We watched again, never gets old. Love it. Thank you
Beautiful, Todd!
Good grief Todd, your video work just keeps getting better and better. It helps to have simply amazing areas to play and shoot but most people have no idea how much effort you put in to make these videos. I couldn’t tear my eyes away and just wanted it to be twice as long! (Probably just how you felt while you were out there!)
The fact that you don’t have 100k subs is nearly a crime, I hope the whole aviation community finds you because if they get here, they won’t ever leave. Fantastic channel sir.
Dang Randy. Appreciate the comments man. Truly was an amazing place.. the video doesn't do it justice but I'm glad it was still enjoyable and gave a glimpse of a downright impressive place. I don't think I'm the best at marketing the channel... its been a tough road trying to reach people. But thank you again for the kind words! -T
Wow! I'm always blown away by your videos. Really captures the beauty and possibilities of flight. Cheers!
Thank you 👍🏼
Impressive scenery! Thanks.
The scenery is breathtaking.
Amazing video, captures everything. The image quality is outstanding
Thanks Tim!
What a fantastic video. It was so great to see all this beauty and areas of complete isolation. Almost like exploring an uninhabited planet. The US has so many fantastic places that can only be appreciated by an aircraft. These vidoes need to be seen in an IMax theater. Thx
kind words!, agreed about how awesome a plane is to experience this stuff!! thank you!
Thanks for the video, great!!!
Thanks to the members of utahbackcountrypilots.org for keeping all these amazing strips in great condition!!
Absolutely
If your flight was recent I’m sure they’d also love some condition reports for the strips you visited! Looked like a great time!
This is THE flight. holy hell thats beautiful. This is everything I want in back country flying.
Thank you for that comment! Agreed btw, doesn’t really get any better
Seriously... 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
This was so spectacular- your flying, filming, and music was stunning. We really enjoyed this! Thank you!!!!!!! Beautiful scenery !!!
Very well done, look forward to each of your videos.
so good! I need to go flying with your guys next time I am in the US :)
yes!
Absolutely smashed the views.......awesome!
😮😮😮😍😍😍😁😁😁WOW !!!!!!
Awesome vid - I really must do that!
This video exemplifies the reason I started building the S7. I love the canyon country, been there many times 4-wheeling, mountain biking, and backpacking. One thing that's clear is that huge areas of it are not even accessible by 4-Wheel drive. I've flown over it in the Bonanza many times and thought how great it would be if you could just land. Or even fly relatively safely down low in the canyons. I can't wait to get the plane finished up and get out there. Also happy to see that Cory's 100Hp Rotax powered plane seems to do just fine. Thanks again, Todd!
I'm looking forward to you getting your 7 done, you will love it! So much fun in places like this- just as you suspect. His 6 does really well. Partially because it's very light, and has a huge wing.. but I'm always impressed with that thing. Especially down at low elevation of course. My 7 is fancy with all the special mods, and will of course do more, especially up high...but that old 6 just keeps on going places...hard to beat it bang for the buck wise.
Nice work Todd, you do a great job in highlighting the beauty of the American backcountry. Hope you manage to get some time in the air over the winter.
appreciate that Scott! thanks... wx is usually decent until after the new year.. then blizzard season starts. Take care
Great video
Its funny, I can watch the flying, the camera going over the edge.. I can be in a plane, no problem... but you walking up to the edge... alarmbells goes off in my body and I wanna skip the video! lol Human mind is amazing! :D ...I'm sitting in a damn office chair infront of my computer far far faaaar away! Not that distance matters in this case but yeah... xD
Been following the Flying Cowboys for a while, but just stumbled onto your channel. Your videos are every bit as good as any of the Flying Cowboys. You go into some of the same strips as the FC’s do. I’ll bet some of them watch your videos. You should go fly with them sometime.
thanks Gapster! appreciate that man. Ive met a couple of them and flown with them just a little. We have been trying to connect for a while. I had hope to this fall out there, but the trip got cut so short unfortunately. Hopefully next year!! thanks again for the comment -Todd
That is on the bucket list beautiful place .
Stellar video!!! Im subscribing after I type this!!
thanks Lance!!
Wow! You are really good at making some fantastic content. Amazing views! Thanks for taking us along.
Good to see all that hard work you put into your plane paying off. I think we're all looking forward to a longer Utah trip next year. Nobody captures the spectacle better!
Thanks my friend!
amazing video !!
Great video. Thank you
Great video!
Wow thanks for sharing. Could you camp anywhere you want? Like on the sand bar, if theres no chance of flash flood of course!.
glad to! you could camp there on the sand bar.. and all the strips we landed at of course as well.. some of the really wild (beautiful) areas we flew over with the big monuments and such are areas you cannot legally land... but a great deal of utah is accessible to land and camp which is amazing! aviation seems very welcomed in Utah! Idaho is the same way.... where I am in Colorado not so much unfortunately. we do have a fair bit of public land in CO.. but Utah and Nevada really are the mecca of public land you can access by plane (and other ways) and enjoy...
@@GravityKnightFlying Thanks so much for the reply, fun to follow your adventures!
@@GravityKnightFlying what river was that sandbar on? Looks like the most epic camping spot imaginable! Your vids are the best backcountry flying videos in existence. Really inspired me to get my private . Thank you
@@cubdweller wow that is great to hear Andrew!!! glad to be a part of that. And thanks for the comment! oh this was on the green river.
Brother, your video editing is really beautiful. Love the selection of music and the cinematography was just outstanding. Fantastic video. Great job!👍👍👍👍
Thanks!!
Wow, that was some amazing country and filming! Wouldn’t care to have an engine out in most of that!👍🇨🇦
My favorite flying channel by far!
This is one of the best times of the year to fly Utah if the weather is good. Most people come to Utah in summer when it hot. Killer video.
First time being first! Very nice video.
nice video....it is awesome out there
This solo footage reminds me of the film,'The English Patient!'but Utah in the American outback is more interesting!
Howdy Todd, didn’t know you were a UA-camr. I knew you made a video or two, but this was great content.
Ya know, Orlo has breakfast first Saturday of the month, maybe we’ll see ya there. Moose
Hey Moose!!! Good to hear from you! I'll stop in up there one of these saturday mornings! what time? -Todd
@@GravityKnightFlying or feel free to drop into my airstrip anytime you want as well.
Normally gets going about 8:00ish and done by 11:30.
@@moose7472 thank you!!!
Wow
Awesome video!
Thank you ✌🏼
Man do you know how to put together an awesome video! That engine seems to be running great.
thanks Ralph, it sure is!!
Love it! Maybe next spring I'll get out that way, in the mean time I'll enjoy the Allegheny's. Not many off field places but scenic and plenty of places to visit. another great video. Thanks for bringing us along.
great video... sometimes the view is worth showing. You did a great job on this one
When were you out there? I was out there from Oct. 27 through Nov. 2. I hung out around the Mexican Mountain area camping at various strips.
We just missed you! We were there on the 5th and left on the 6th
Love your videos and flights my friend ! amazing ! what airstrips are close at minute 7 on your video ? thanks !
that area is close to Mexican Mountain (west of Green river maybe 20 miles or so)... amazing place! thank you!
@@GravityKnightFlying Thank you very much for your help and continue flying and making amazing videos ! : )
This was great to watch, maybe a bit more filming of time on the ground but thoroughly enjoyed watching.
Thank you for change in the music , my ears would be bleeding by now , it sucks to be old
Man that was friggin awesome Todd....such fantastic camera work and hi-res quality. Those flying in the river scenes at the back half were incrediable. Did you comr across any other pilots flying through those canyons...could get hairy coming opposite ways?
I watched it on the big TV here in the bedroom..will show the Mrs tonight when she gets home..she is going to love it
Thanks Mark! We didn’t see or hear anyone except those friends we ran into at the camp spot... pretty surprised actually. Could be a little exciting!
Absolutely beautiful scenery, Utah is fantastic. I fly South of England on edge of marshes, very flat and uninteresting compared....love your music tracks too, could you name them ?
Here’s to next vid. Cheers
I thought I recognised that piece of music, I used it on the intro to my latest flying series of videos.
@Gyro Jeffro haha, I think I'll struggle with keeping the nose on the ground when I'm not sat in it..lol.
Your channel is sick keeping making videos!
Would you ever consider being a guide to a couple of planes
Good question David. I haven't ruled it out. That type of question has come up a few times, and I have kind of been mulling it over. Not being an instructor, none of it would be official, and I'd have to be careful to not cross any lines. Plus, I am confident in what I can do with my own plane, but leading others into situations they may or may not be good with...definitely some worry there. Probably would be no big deal and a good time, but I figure I should think through all the negative possibilities before doing anything like that. -Todd
oh, yeh : thanks.
Great video, beautiful scenery. Question: if you had an incident after landing on the sand bar what is your rescue plan?
Having two airplanes there is probably the best way to get out initially. He carries as spot, and I have a garmin inreach for all out emergencies. I have two batteries onboard to hopefully ensure I can start mine. But no doubt about it, there is a risk landing in a place like that. It could get expensive if something major goes wrong! Shoot, even a lot of these strips in the Utah backcountry don't have vehicle access (like Idaho). Part of why we chose a large sandbar too, there was some small ones that would have been fun, but less room if we both have to ride out in 1 plane or have to call a friend in for help etc.
@@GravityKnightFlying Thank you for the reply. I pretty much knew you had some contingency plans. I really enjoy your videos detailing your mechanical skills as well as the flying. Your plane is well suited to the type of flying you are doing. I think we would all enjoy seeing more details of the numbers related to the altitude and density altitude, VSI, etc. As an East Coast pilot I can barely imagine what it must be like to fly out West. Thanks again!
You certainly have some amazing scenery to fly around. Not many land out options though. How do you mitigate them?
Go overkill on maintenance, hope for a nice sandbar! There was a lot of them actually. When over the really rough stuff we kept some altitude, although I’m not sure it would matter much. Pretty rough terrain... no risk no reward though in some of these places.
Looking to get into this. Living it the high rocky mountains of colorado. How do these machines perform at high altitude? Like 9000 foot take off, and flying 13+ high? Love your vids.
Being turbocharged makes a massive difference up high. My old bird did ok with a big bore..but this one rips up high... its more money, more tinkering, more attention needed, but the performance can't be beat! Edge has the best setup for the Rotax and Yamahas currently.
@@GravityKnightFlying Thank you so much for the reply!
@@ianh3007 Hey no problem... just to give you an idea, I was tuning boost the other day up high. Working around a fixed pitch prop, you can only run so much boost up high. So I had to turn it down as I go up. At 16,000ft, with the boost reduced to not exceed redline, it was still holding around 1100ft /min climb. Not at gross weight, but not light either.. an average, realistic weight you could say. Cheers!
Dang those are good numbers. Good stuff to keep in mind. I know a bit amount about turbo'd engines up in altitude. Im a heavy diesel, snowcat, snowmobile mechanic up here. Id love to own and maintain my own plane as well. Just started my private pilots training!
@@ianh3007 So Ian, it's a year later. Did you get your private license?
One lone soul disliked this video.. How miserable a human being must they be? LOL
🤣👍
