Oil and gas. Pepetroleum engineering and Drilling jobs. Mechanical engineering (or other) to get into the field. Oil field carrer paths.
Masters degree that complement a engineering degree.
Also, were you totally terrified as a new engineering student? How did you start out and overcome? I just think about making the decision to decide on engineering and it becomes overwhelming.
Also. My MAJOR obstacle is how to pay for school? Working full time and paying bills. Just go to school part time?
Inspired by your excellence. I enjoy njoy your work.

Hey Jake, was thinking. You have done a great job on what engineering degrees to go for and what careers those fields do well in; but could you do a video on "fake" engineering degrees? I ran into someone who got a degree in Construction Engineering Technology, and he said that you can't really get a job because companies would either just hire someone with a construction management or a civil engineer. He says it was just a bunch of buzz words and he got trapped. It might be worth talking about these buzz word degrees that wouldn't really be considered engineering fields.

But I am having trouble choosing a major, I am a senior in hs rn so I still have a little time to decide, but it’s between Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Sci. I noticed that you said to not do Software Engineering as a major but my school, SJSU, does have an ABET accredited Software Engineering program, if that changes anything? can mechatronic engineers make Artificial Intelligence?

    • @JakeVoorhees
      @JakeVoorhees  3 роки тому

Hey thanks for the question. MEs can end up working in software, and because of this, if you accumulate the right skills, sure yes you can work in machine learning or deep learning or AI type fields. It would be more common for a standard ME to get involved working with the physical components of a device or robot within AI. So let me know what type of AI work you want to do.
AI is a very broad field so there is no single answer, but if you are going to major in engineering, then the more you know about computer science, the better. Majoring in CS is probably the absolute best avenue, but either can do, especially electrical engineering because of how closely it sits to computer science. Other skills/subjects that are valuable including mathematics, statistics, data science, and even cognitive science are good subjects to take as electives.
Any engineering degree can put you in a position to pretty much do whatever you want, particularly one that is mechanical or electrical engineering, and again... the closer you are to a skilled programmer, the more your options open up, regardless of you choosing ME/EE/Aerospace/ChemE, etc
Let’s say you go with engineering. I would encourage you to use any opportunity in your engineering curriculum to take a CS or math course that garners some skill that builds momentum for a career in AI. Do the same with your internships - work with companies that do something within AI. Same with the professors you build relationships with, the events you go to and the people you network with, as well as the engineering organizations/societies/clubs that you join.
Once you become super intentional about your career, everything sort of falls into place the way you intend for it to do. And when you decide you're getting bored or you want something else, you can simply shift everything in the above paragraph, and repeat it. I've done civil engineering, into traffic engineering, into intelligent transportation systems, into travel demand modeling, into wedding videography, digital marketing, UA-cam, and even was with a startup for 2 years and featured on ABC's Shark Tank.
You can do whatever you want with an engineering degree :) Does this help?
Let me know what follow up questions you may have and I can try to help with those. Cheers!
PS I also often get questions about what coding languages to learn in order to have a career in AI. For AI momentum, the primary language is 100% Python. Lisp is a legacy language for the industry. Also C++, Java, R, Prolog are all used in the AI industry.
Does this help and make sense? Let me know what follow up questions you have okay? I respond to 100% of comments, cheers!!!

This one is pretty straight forward - do not do software engineering as a major - do computer science. All the top software engineers have an electrical / computer engineering background or and most likely, computer science. There are only a few ABET accredited software engineering programs in the USA but 283 CS programs which means they are a part of the engineering department. Software engineering only teaches you how to make software. Computer Science teaches the entire theory and beyond.

Thanks for another amazing comment! Computer Science and ME majors would only have a few overlapping courses besides the ones you said. Some MEs only have to take one or two computer science classes, and then some of the upper level math classes my overlap, but MEs will take math specifically for their curriculum and so will CS majors.
Computer Engineering will have much more overlap with CS than ME because so much of Computer Engineering is dealing with the programming integration between the computer hardware and the software.
In order to know more specifics, I encourage you to do a side by side comparison of CS vs CPE at the universities you are considering, and you will see how close vs how different some of the schools are. Each program is a little different from school to school, but there will be decent overlap.

Hi can you give me some more information on Industrial Engineering please. I'm going to college in fall of this year

    • @JakeVoorhees
      @JakeVoorhees  3 роки тому +1

Hey thanks for the comment. Yup I have this video on Industrial Engineering for you,
      .
Industrial Engineering is a great field and it’s very different from most other engineering fields. It considers the opposite approach. Mechanical or electrical or civil engineering, and all the rest, will look at each individual part or component and optimize them one at a time in order to maximize the sum of the parts (or whatever the objective is, which may include reduce costs, reduce build-time, etc).
      .
Industrial engineering considered the entire system wide perspective, so it looks at the full top down umbrella view. Therefore, it considers more things like human factors, and the perspectives of people working a system (ex: manufacturing), along with other things that are not raw engineering elements. Due to this difference, there is less math. Another thing that I like about IE is that it is far more diverse, having 40% women vs the standard 13% across the board. Below is a video I did on industrial engineering.
      .
      “What is Industrial Engineering?” ua-cam.com/video/XiEC6o_xlaw/v-deo.html
      .
This video has some manufacturing engineering in it, see the description for timestamps,
“What Do Mechanical Engineers Actually Do?” ua-cam.com/video/bssgoMZrhj0/v-deo.html
      .

Hey thanks for the comment. Double majoring in two engineering fields is very uncommon. Most engineering professionals can branch into another engineering realm with the exact degree they have, so its unnecessary. EEs can work as anything they like usually. MEs can work as EE sometimes and as CEs often. CEs will often workin in the power industry or HVAC industry and make have a ME role. MEs can work as Aerospace Engineers and Biomedical Engineers. Chemical Engineers can do anything they like. BioMed engineers can work in a lot of medical fields.
It's super common for someone to get an undergrad in one certain type of engineering and then get a graduate degree in another. MEs go to graduate school for Aerospace often. Civils will go for Structural or Environmental. This type of thing. But its really uncommon to see a double major. Maybe Electrical and Computer Engineering if the uni offers both individual degrees but the classes overlap so much that is can basically be the same degree.
Does that help and make sense? Let me know what follow up questions you have okay? Cheers thanks!

Yup that video is coming for sure, and yeah here is actually a a video interviewing a propulsion engineer, “What is Combustion Engineering? | Can Mechanical Engineers Become Aerospace Engineers?” ua-cam.com/video/qnXpsjZcq0k/v-deo.html
Here are my other aerospace videos for now, “What is Aerospace Engineering? What do Aerospace Engineers Do?” ua-cam.com/video/vDa0fB6kxVc/v-deo.html
      .
“Aerospace Engineer Interview | How To Get A Job At Boeing | How To Get A Job At Lockheed Martin” ua-cam.com/video/NuPAiaonLrQ/v-deo.html
Let me know what other things I can help you with okay? Cheers thanks
