From the voice out! Its what I teach my students. You explained it so well, and graciously. Its George Benson! A friend of mine knows GB, and the subject came up about how transcribing, and how essential it was to create language. Someone said George doesnt read music. But my pal replied, "He can sing all of Charlie Parker's solos and he can play what he sings!"
Back before the internet I asked the best guitar player I ever met how he got so good at improvising. He just said “learn to sing”. At the time I thought he was gatekeeping. But later I realized what he meant. He had practiced playing along with his scat singing until the guitar was like an extension of his voice.
Hey Cecil! This is a massively helpful video. I think some of the times I improved the most were when I had little melodies stuck in my head as a result from listening to lots of music very closely and humming. Your comment at 15:00 was very inspiring and eye opening, I will certainly give these ideas more attention in my practice. Love the new song btw :-).
Thanks for this lesson full of wisdom...its very logical in a sens ... but as a rock/blues/metal/fusion/ guitarist who plays jazz as a hobby, i always tend to go to the short cut /easy stuff... working on theory/licks/technique for hours, but my progression in jazz playing over the years is very slow.....i never tried to sing because it seems very foreign and difficult for me..but your lesson is eye opening !!
Thanks Cecil. This is great! Could you make a video about how to draw up a practice routine/schedule for those who want to become jazz musicians. Thanks!
Here’s the catch; With multiple ways/positions/fingerings for the same group of notes AND that stupid maj 3rd interval from G to B strings…this is a Herculean task. Makes me wish I placed sax.
Great information, if your a beginner. Listening. By the time I turn 16, could play anything off the Radio note-for-note, including chords. What's a Radio. 😂. But that's where my knowledge base stopped. I knew I needed more theory to sound/play on a professional level. You need at least the basics to get around.
I noticed you've been putting stuff out there playing more often on nylon acoustic, I'm curious on your thoughts on artists like Nelson Faria, Helio Delmiro, Toninho Horta, players that have such an interesting take on jazz vocabulary executed on the nylon!
I don’t actually. I think that the more you train your ability to sing phrases and find the notes on the instrument, the easier it is to know what the intervals are as soon as you sing them. I learned solfège in school but didn’t find it very helpful after a while
This is not simply a lesson.. this is “The Lesson”.. You’re great !❤️
Always had lhe feeling that the majority of the jazz masters think this way. Give thanks for the video. Respect.
Cecil is giving away the entire game here and i love it

This video couldn’t have been more helpful in my current stage of being a guitarist. Thank you!

Great video. Everything you said in there is absolutely essential. No amount of theoretical knowledge can substitute for it.
Great advice, thank you!
This is an excellent lesson!! Thank you Cecil!
Dude you are such a gem thank you
This is the most truthful thing I've heard in jazz education, truly. Thank you for sharing.

I’m not big on schedules/practice routines but I’ll do a video on how I like to practice!
You are a great teacher, a brilliant communicator. Well done and thank you!

When I play solos out of thin air most people wish the air was thicker haha thank you for the lesson

Amazing...thank you for the wisdom!

unfortunately every instrument has a “catch” 🤷🏾♂️
Tune in 4ths 😉
Great video! I’m guilty of over-analysis. Its time to let my ears guide the way. Thanks!

Did your radio play Eric Dolphy?
Awesome! Thanks!
Really cool. 🙏
Thank you!
Great video! I kind of do the same thing
Thank you
Thank you very much!

Очень важный урок, это видео войдёт в историю , спасибо огромное
new album tease at the end there?
yep!
Cool lesson! Can you sing instead of whistle? Or is it better to whistle?
I've always wondered why jazz whistling is not a thing, I'd probably hate it but you'd think there'd be at least one person in all of jazz history
I think Toots Thielemans did some whistling stuff
Rory Hoffman
Brad Terry

Language is largely informed by environment, non? Thank you for your video. 🌱
wow... do you have perfect pitch?
@@reanimator9 no I don’t
ok, that's impressive
Do you use solfege syllables,(for Example if you do not have instrument around you)?
I don’t actually. I think that the more you train your ability to sing phrases and find the notes on the instrument, the easier it is to know what the intervals are as soon as you sing them. I learned solfège in school but didn’t find it very helpful after a while
I find examples more helpful than talking. I found examples at 4:00 and 11:10.
Straight to the point! Love that about you
LOL…. “How to learn jazz…”. Just sing the bass notes a capella to Giant Steps perfectly. Ohhhhkayyy…. 😂😂😂😂😂
Darn. Not for me, vocal damage and can't hold a note.
bull shit my friend !!!!
lol
let's hear YOUR playing then
