I like that, even compleated, the Phyrexian dinosaurs are unable to oppose Zacama. I do wish Gishath would get a chance to shine, but this was still awesome.
Poor Etali, although the way he went was somehow poetic: even corrupted, he stands down and barely resist being putting down by Zacama, as if wanting release from the plague that twisted its nature. Edit: Zacama is apparently a SHE, not an HE; apologize, my mistake.
I LOVE that you decided to tell it as a linear storyline. In the written chapter all the flashbacks and "previously" threw me for a loop. I did miss the "I did not lie to her" line tho.
Kudos to MtG artists for depicting dinosaurs with reasonable scientific accuracy. We know now that dinosaurs actually had feathers and birdlike while the media still insists on depicting them as small Godzillas.
It seems like in all the stories of Ixalan, the Elder Dinosaurs receive more representation than the dinosaur avatars. I hope in the lost caverns they give more of a story to the avatars.
the elder Dinos are far, far larger and more powerful than the Dino avatars as Gishath is the only legendary avatar which means there are or have been and will be other avatars for the 3 colors as they aren't even named. And even Gishath is small compared to Ghalta and Etali likely barely as tall as their legs, meaning the Avatar Dinos get simply crushed by any Elder Dino.
R.I.P Etali, at least the other Elder Dinosaurs seem to be fine. I am curious which Dinosaur they'll pick to replace Etali to complete the Elder Dinosaur cycle.
At this point, there's already consequences and there's more to come. Having a new Dinosaur ascend to fill Etali's slot doesn't diminish the consequence of Etali being compleated and dying lorewise. However, not having a successor for Etali hoses Red cycle wise for gameplay when we return to Ixalan or even future returns to Ixalan.

The Ixalan dinosaurs are suppose to be forces of nature for Ixalan, and Etali according to its wiki page, was the "Red manifestation of Mana and the unending of the raging storm in Ixalan." Without Etali around, who knows how that will impact the weather patterns in Ixalan.

It saddens me to have Etali fall. I was hoping we'd see him again next time we went to Ixalan, but not like this. My favorite named creature/commander gone:( I was honestly a little emotional reading this side story, especially the end when Hautli is describing Zacama putting Etali down, how he gave up and accepted his fate, and how Zacama seemed to feel regret for having to do what she did
I love how awe inspiring Zacama is presented as, even the compleated Dinosaurs dont dare to take up arms against her, so utterly consumed by her magnificience. I interpret Etali not fighting back, as him fighting against the clompeation through, asking to be put out of his misery.
I really want to see the planes brushing up against each other/a bunch of omen paths opening between a pair of planes. Alara and Tarkir having a solid bridge for a year would be so cool. Or Shadowmoor + Eldraine, Theros + Kamigawa, Kaldheim + Innistrad, Kaladesh and Amonkhet, Ixalan and Strixhaven, Ravnica and Capena.
Man this really did feel hopeless for a while there. But these last three planar defense stories show the forexians actually being held off if not pushed back.
I wish I couldn't see the glaring plot holes. 1. How did Etali get compleated? not a plot hole until you consider that of the other 4 Elder dinos, only 1 (the black one with long-range spike attacks) could feasibly get away without a mouthful of oil potentially infecting themselves. Zacama might be immune, being the soul of Ixalan, but Zetalpa and Ghalta should have mouths full of oil and on their way to compleation 2. How are any of these things resisting phyrexia. I can understand this instance because the Ixalan natives knew they couldn't fight Zacama, even with phyrexian power so they accepted their deaths. But it just reminds me that Tamiyo fully resisted long enough to release a sealed, uncompleat, copy of her soul and allowed herself to die while purposefully missing shots. How powerful is the will of phyrexia, we are getting contradictions left and right. Ajani is the most loyal, but Tamiyo can resist. 3. How strong is Phyrexia? we have Compleat Etali here, but literally nothing else more threatening than a simple Norn soldier. On Dominaria they had the 5 defilers and Sheoldred personally infect half the plane to attempt to capture planeswalkers and the Sylex, they weren't even invading yet and they could infect half the plane in secret. On Cappena they only sent soldiers and Atraxa, while on Theros they plan to compleat the Gods. On Ikoria they only sent Lukka, while on Kamigawa they split the spirit tree in two and used it as a geyser to spread the phyresis. It feels like either it's contradicting how powerful the invasion force is or Norn is being so stupid by sending armies to planes she doesn't even care about and thinning her army way too much to be threatening anymore.
Ok. We who've been following this stuff since the 90s know how Phyrexia works. A plane musters a heroic defence, wins a series of impressive hard-fought battles, then its heroes look around to find out they lost everywhere else, and it's only a matter of time before there's nothing else left to defend. Phyrexia plays territorial Go. Even if the defenders are never totally wiped out, like the Mirrans, the plane is lost. The problem with these stories seems to be that this inexorable aspect of Phyrexia isn't explored. It's the one thing that sold the threat of Phyrexia back in Mirrodin: it doesn't matter how many times you defeat them, they just need to defeat you once. It actually leaves the impression that those planes are faring well against the invasion, when in fact, if lore remains even slightly consistent, with every second more oil keeps flowing and exponentially compleating more and more of any plane invaded. It's the one thing lacking in this otherwise motherlode of pretty good lore. You can fight Phyrexia, but you can't outlast Phyrexia. In any war of atrition, they should just win. Let's just hope we get a follow up on those planes showing just that, that each needs a more permanent solution. Halo, Ikorian cristals, Mirran resistance to oil, whatever. Whenever there are no such things, the planes should just fall sooner or later.
I love all this story. I do hope to see maybe Garruk and Liliana meet again and fight side by side. Would be super cool. Imagine Garruk taking down vorinclex with little effort. Ultimately my guess is Elesh Norn is taken down by Elspeth.
Perhaps the Phyrexian Etali will have an effect similar to Nashi, allowing you to exile each player's top card when attacking and paying life instead of mana to cast them
I wonder what happened to Azor in this story. Since he is stuck on a island and has the strongest heiroghmancy how or if he did defend himself against the phyrexians. My lesbian heart loves this relationship eek.
I reeealy hope they do one of these storys on a whole new plane we have never heard of before. Pretend like we know what is going on: no introductions, no giving names just go with it. The phyrexians marching on plane nr 1158. A fully formed plane that has existed for as long as all others. Currently it feels like they are still marching on "us" and "the people we know". I want to feel like they are attacking EVERYONE.
Imagine MEcha Jace stopping by and giving Azor his memories back, as well as the gift of Phyrexia. Perhaps Azor can help bring Bolas to his former glory for the sake of Norn?
Though it's a little disappointing it does kind of hold up under scrutiny. Everyone, in the story, who was going around saying 'the Phyrexians are all powerful doom machines' are characters that have previously been traumatized by the Phyrexians (Karn, Elspeth, the Mirrans) and those who are listening to them.
To be fair: how many people knew about Strixhaven's founder spell and its effects on the one plane in particular? How many knew that the beasts of ikoria could evolve a resistance to the oil so quickly? And all that to say that we jump into those stories shortly before they temporarily resolve the invasion, or otherwise start turning the fight slightly in their favor. Strixhaven still lost many of its instructors and likely many more. Ikoria had drannith fall like it was nothing. Planes are struggling hard. The most interesting stories for us to see are the small successes.
Maybe that's it, though? That the more "humanoid" planes are easier to compleat (other than Mirrodin, which to be fair was just begging for it)? and the more animalistic/bestial/mystical are able to fight Phyrexia more effectively? Doesn't hold much water considering New Capena. Maybe just simplistic story drating...Still fairly good fun.

I feel like the phyrexians have become the storm troopers of MTG. We know the empire (phyrexia) is powerful, and their numbers are vaster than comprehension, and every now and then they kill an obi wan (compleating planeswalkers or other prominent characters), but every battle that they've engaged in so far, except the initial conquering of New Phyrexia and the initial strike againts them by the gatewatch, they've overall lost. We know they've inflicted serious casualties, and they've even whacked a few characters as I've mentioned, but otherwise they've folded in every one of these stories as soon as the main characters get involved. Every one of these stories shows the viewpoint character witnessing victory against Phyrexia. Not once have we seen the main character in one of these MoM stories lose against Phyrexia. Maybe it's just because this is only number 8, but Wanderer killed Tamiyo and Jin didn't think to add "compleats spirits" when modifying the oil to preserve the spark, Viven killed Lukka and Ikoria seems incorruptible, Strixhaven got repelled for a bit and made a new planeswalker, and Wrenn is about to mess with the tree and Chandra kept Nissa from stoppign her. Phyrexians haven't really won on another plane yet, let alone have us read about the downfall of this hypothetical plane, so it feels like we can't take them as seriously yet. It also feels like the infectivity of the glistening oil is wildly inconsistent, corrupting at a touch one moment, and doing nothing even in deep wounds in another, to say nothing of Ikoria. It feels like they are going to write the Phyrexian invasion as a complete failure on the Phyrexian end and essentially kill the faction off without them having done really anything except thin the legendary and planeswalker pool a bit.
@@jasonkorf7700 But I doubt you would say that those are as Phyrexian-sided as the other stories have been for the non-Phyrexians. And while I didn't actually go on the website to see how long those are compared to the others, the fact that our loreman lumped all 3 together lends evidence to those not being nearly as significant. Even then, that is 3 stories, compared to the 4 phyrexian losses. Even if phyrexia is winning, the storytelling makes it feel like Phyrexia is losing the invasion. Also, while Kaladesh and Kaldheim definitely seem more like Phyrexian victories, it doesn't feel like as bad a loss for the resistance as these phrexian losses have felt. And New Capenna is building up to being the bugspray to Phyrexia, so i wouldn't really chalk that one up for the Phyrexians.

So, Mirrodin got completely overtaken after Karn accidentally brought a lil bit of black goop there. So how are all of these planes gonna prevent similar scenarios?
That's the driving question, but they're answering it in some pretty cool ways! From what ive seen The Ikoria story shows us that the plane is evolving fast enough to resist phyresis and New Capena's halo is also a repellant for the oil and its effects. So there's potential for sure
Argentum was built by Karn who was bearing not just glistening oil but the heartstone of a Phyrexian (a Phyrexian traitor, sure, but still a Phyrexian). It is entirely possible that the influence of Phyrexia began even before the corruption of the oil but with the very construction of the plane itself. Strike one. Karn then created a caretaker, Memnarch, out of a cursed artifact (the Mirari which grants wishes but dooms the user). Strike two. Then there's the artificial nature of the plane itself which likely made it vastly more susceptible to corruption than other planes. Strike three. In comparison Dominaria was invaded by Phyrexia on multiple occasions, has literal pools of glistening oil and other Phyrexian wreckage that's been around for centuries, and still hasn't fallen.
They you prevent it with story. But one day, after Nicol Bolas come back and is defeated again, the story will tell the oil to work again in one of those planes and phyrexians will be back again.
Urza was a god tier Planeswalker and it took him thousands of years and his own sacrifice to end Phyrexia. Meanwhile these phyrexians literally haven't had a single win moment
hadnt read the ixalan story yet but was thinking about gishath and zacama and thought it wouldnt make sense to add color to em in a card...... then i remembered etali and thought hed definitely be a good candidate... guess that prediction came true quick.
Zacama too powerful for phyrexians to do anything to her. Her roar completely destroys almost all the foot soldiers 😂. She took down etali like it was nothing when zetalpa had trouble. Im guessing whatever magical power zacama uses is too strong to be compleated. She bit into etali twice and was fine. But somehow etali got turned, wander how

Weird that all this oil is everywhere, and it literally turns you into a phyrexian by just getting on you, but all these dinos and people covered in it aren't being turned. Should be getting turned from biting the head off of another dino.
It should've been Zetalpa (the white dino legend if I got the name wrong) so players could be salty when she's put in every commander deck going forward.
I wonder if some planes will be fully dominated by phyrexians(it would be boring if the good guys defended all of them and also each of known planeswalker would live it through). I just hope, that Innistrad and Tarkir would survive, cause they are my faves
I mean isn't it really boring that on every plane it goes like: 1) pyrexia gets a fancy new compleated toy to seem powerful 2) the plane summons some thing with connection to previous story 3) phyrexians get absolutely shiestomped its been like this for every plane and will go like that probably for every other plane too. kind of lame...

The Planeswalkers: The planes won't be able to stop the Phyrexian's. We need to protect them.
The Last Few Planes: Well that was easy.
Though it's a little disappointing it does kind of hold up under scrutiny. Everyone, in the story, who was going around saying 'the Phyrexians are all powerful doom machines' are characters that have previously been traumatized by the Phyrexians (Karn, Elspeth, the Mirrans) and those who are listening to them.
To be fair: how many people knew about Strixhaven's founder spell and its effects on the one plane in particular? How many knew that the beasts of ikoria could evolve a resistance to the oil so quickly?
And all that to say that we jump into those stories shortly before they temporarily resolve the invasion, or otherwise start turning the fight slightly in their favor. Strixhaven still lost many of its instructors and likely many more. Ikoria had drannith fall like it was nothing.
Planes are struggling hard. The most interesting stories for us to see are the small successes.
No plane was won yet, they won small victories, but the fight just started

Maybe that's it, though? That the more "humanoid" planes are easier to compleat (other than Mirrodin, which to be fair was just begging for it)? and the more animalistic/bestial/mystical are able to fight Phyrexia more effectively?
Doesn't hold much water considering New Capena. Maybe just simplistic story drating...Still fairly good fun.
I’m still hoping we get a return of bolas and the eldrazi in this set since it’s all hands on deck here I bet the eldrazi would just body the phyrexian eat the mana in the oil and be drawn to realm breaker like a buffet
I feel like the phyrexians have become the storm troopers of MTG. We know the empire (phyrexia) is powerful, and their numbers are vaster than comprehension, and every now and then they kill an obi wan (compleating planeswalkers or other prominent characters), but every battle that they've engaged in so far, except the initial conquering of New Phyrexia and the initial strike againts them by the gatewatch, they've overall lost. We know they've inflicted serious casualties, and they've even whacked a few characters as I've mentioned, but otherwise they've folded in every one of these stories as soon as the main characters get involved. Every one of these stories shows the viewpoint character witnessing victory against Phyrexia. Not once have we seen the main character in one of these MoM stories lose against Phyrexia. Maybe it's just because this is only number 8, but Wanderer killed Tamiyo and Jin didn't think to add "compleats spirits" when modifying the oil to preserve the spark, Viven killed Lukka and Ikoria seems incorruptible, Strixhaven got repelled for a bit and made a new planeswalker, and Wrenn is about to mess with the tree and Chandra kept Nissa from stoppign her. Phyrexians haven't really won on another plane yet, let alone have us read about the downfall of this hypothetical plane, so it feels like we can't take them as seriously yet. It also feels like the infectivity of the glistening oil is wildly inconsistent, corrupting at a touch one moment, and doing nothing even in deep wounds in another, to say nothing of Ikoria. It feels like they are going to write the Phyrexian invasion as a complete failure on the Phyrexian end and essentially kill the faction off without them having done really anything except thin the legendary and planeswalker pool a bit.
We left Kaldheim on a cliffhanger, same with Kaladesh, and I wouldn't say when we left New Capenna that one side had won a victory.
@@jasonkorf7700 But I doubt you would say that those are as Phyrexian-sided as the other stories have been for the non-Phyrexians. And while I didn't actually go on the website to see how long those are compared to the others, the fact that our loreman lumped all 3 together lends evidence to those not being nearly as significant. Even then, that is 3 stories, compared to the 4 phyrexian losses. Even if phyrexia is winning, the storytelling makes it feel like Phyrexia is losing the invasion. Also, while Kaladesh and Kaldheim definitely seem more like Phyrexian victories, it doesn't feel like as bad a loss for the resistance as these phrexian losses have felt. And New Capenna is building up to being the bugspray to Phyrexia, so i wouldn't really chalk that one up for the Phyrexians.

That's the driving question, but they're answering it in some pretty cool ways! From what ive seen The Ikoria story shows us that the plane is evolving fast enough to resist phyresis and New Capena's halo is also a repellant for the oil and its effects. So there's potential for sure
Argentum was built by Karn who was bearing not just glistening oil but the heartstone of a Phyrexian (a Phyrexian traitor, sure, but still a Phyrexian). It is entirely possible that the influence of Phyrexia began even before the corruption of the oil but with the very construction of the plane itself. Strike one.
Karn then created a caretaker, Memnarch, out of a cursed artifact (the Mirari which grants wishes but dooms the user). Strike two.
Then there's the artificial nature of the plane itself which likely made it vastly more susceptible to corruption than other planes. Strike three.
In comparison Dominaria was invaded by Phyrexia on multiple occasions, has literal pools of glistening oil and other Phyrexian wreckage that's been around for centuries, and still hasn't fallen.
They you prevent it with story. But one day, after Nicol Bolas come back and is defeated again, the story will tell the oil to work again in one of those planes and phyrexians will be back again.
Urza was a god tier Planeswalker and it took him thousands of years and his own sacrifice to end Phyrexia. Meanwhile these phyrexians literally haven't had a single win moment
This invasion of the phyrexians could be even worse and destructive then war of the spark.

Zacama too powerful for phyrexians to do anything to her. Her roar completely destroys almost all the foot soldiers 😂. She took down etali like it was nothing when zetalpa had trouble. Im guessing whatever magical power zacama uses is too strong to be compleated. She bit into etali twice and was fine. But somehow etali got turned, wander how

Weird that all this oil is everywhere, and it literally turns you into a phyrexian by just getting on you, but all these dinos and people covered in it aren't being turned. Should be getting turned from biting the head off of another dino.
It should've been Zetalpa (the white dino legend if I got the name wrong) so players could be salty when she's put in every commander deck going forward.

1) pyrexia gets a fancy new compleated toy to seem powerful
2) the plane summons some thing with connection to previous story
3) phyrexians get absolutely shiestomped
