A briefing on the Type VII U-boat.
ERRATA:
1. When describing the operational areas of the Type VII U-boat I mentioned the Black Sea. That was a mistake I meant Baltic Sea. Little tough driving a Type VII down the autobahn ;)
2. Not errata per se, but I should have been more specific about torpedo capacity. The Type VIIA carried 11 torpedoes (4 bow tubes + 6 reloads, 1 external stern tube). Type VIIB onwards the stern tube was relocated internally (because of double rudder) so it could be reloaded once plus 2 externally carried reloads for a total of 14 torpedoes.
3. Not errata per se, I should have taken a little more time to talk about the Type VIIC/42. Planning for this boat began early in 1942 with preliminary design drawings being produced in June of 1942. It was planned for this boat to have modern conveniences like large capacity food refrigerators and freezers, air conditioning and de-humidification systems, as well as other mechanical and electrical improvements. While production of this boat was cancelled, theses features were carried over to the Type XXI. I bring this up because some people point to the fact that the Americans had these features in their later fleet boats (I know from the Gato class onward, not sure about the earlier fleet boats) and thus German subs were primitive and garbage.

Great lecture. I just starten with a computer game called UBoat so I wanted to learn som more about the history. I of course I watched the German “Das Boot” to get the feeling.
Like Robert Conrad and the REAL pappy boyington on the set of the black sheep squadron.
Absolutely!
it's that song by Elvis - Wooden Heart 😁
haha...good call....but this is where I got it ua-cam.com/video/89JO19UV7DI/v-deo.html
The song of the title music is what the German Navy has used since pre world war two as the music for when their ships would head out to sea. It is an old German folk song. The song is still used today in the German Navy.
@@Curiosity-NZ yeah, but it's more fun this way - to have the Germans go raiding in the Atlantic while listening to Elvis :)
Good video. Just want to let you know Rayder is pronounced ‘Raider’, and Donitz is not ‘donuts’ it’s pronounced ‘Don-its’.
Thank you for watching and the comments! I struggle with pronunciation as an American even though my parents were German immigrants to the USA.
@@SubmarineHistory Np it gave me a laugh :) Look forward to more content from you.
Great job
Thomsen runs out of the car surprisingly sober to see them off.
Yes he does!
Great video.
Thank you for sharing the info!
You're welcome!
Looks like SHIII to open the video, WOW does NOT float MY boat! (what`s with the radio mast aft the tower - thought that was WWI?). Yet another very good, concise and informative video, more Sub(scriber)s needed!
The opening is in-game footage from SH3 with some cropping and a filter applied. Yeah World of Warships what can you say but it does draw a lot of attention to naval history and that's not bad :)
The mast must have been an option when in port to improve radio reception. WoWs does do stuff like that with ships in the port view.
@@SubmarineHistory Totally 1943? Change of music was very PC!
@@SubmarineHistory WHAT no I Phone! Nice try, no cigar, just a FUBAR!
I think I set that SH3 misson to like 1940 so I would get a daytime departure without air raids ;)
could you do a type XXVI type? or the XXIII?
Yes I am going to cover those. I'm also going to talk about the Walther AIP boats. There is still alot of material on US boats but I want to start doing uboat stuff every other briefing. So by this fall I should cover these topics. Thanks for watching!
@@SubmarineHistory hey ofc, great vids. the Walther AIP boats are really interesting I can't find much info other then wikipedia and world of warships russian site (lesta games wiki), for some reason it includes lots of history about it, might be worth checking if you need more info. im excited for upcoming briefs about any sub tho, hope you're doing great.
Eberhard Rossler's book "The U-Boat: The Evolution and Technical History of German Submarines" does a deep dive on the Walther boats. I have a copy of the book, you can find copies on the internet but it's pricey. It's also a difficult book to read, at least the english version but it's what I got :)
@@SubmarineHistory oh thank you!
I'm not sure it's pronounced "doughnuts". 😀
If you're British it's pronounced "DERNITZ" ...but yeah I did go back too look up the pronunciation and it should be "DOONITZ"
Type 7 ; 👉🏻🆒
