如何保持学习外语的动力是我常常思考的问题。我学中文学了14年了，但是我最初的动力和现在的动力截然不同。小时候，我很羡慕我身边的会说多种语言的朋友，感觉说外语是一种超能力，很想体验一下。因为我高中同学差不多都是华人，所以我就开始对中文感兴趣了。最开始我觉得学中文很好玩，可以和中国人说几句逗他们开心。我原本以为能用中文点菜、买衣服、问路等等就够了。我后来觉得，如果想要和中国人深入交流，就一定要多学习。
在学习中文的初期，我主要的动力源于好奇心。后来的动力是为了和中国人聊天，纯属于兴趣爱好。
我四年前开始当中文老师，现在的动力更偏向外在的了。我个人觉得动力也可以分成两种--负面动力和正面动力。负面动力是指因为不想让别人失望或者怕别人笑话而来的。正面的就不用说了。当了中文老师以后，我对自己的要求和期望越来越高，陷入了一种“在学生面前不能说错”的状态。我自己的动力都这么复杂了，希望不会影响到我的学生。
每当我学习中文的动力下降的时候，我会提醒自己“学无止境”，应该享受学习的过程。

This is an interesting episode in that I think it reveals enormous differences in the ways the profession of teaching is viewed in the West versus in China.
In the West, particularly with adult learning, a teacher-student relationship is fundamentally transactional. And equal. The teacher is not higher status than the student. It is merely an exchange of money for services. Just like paying someone to fix your car, or do your taxes.
It seems like this is not the case in China. Where the role of the teacher is venerated. And where the student is subordinate.
So when Karen says there are some questions-straight forward questions about the differences between words in Chinese-which she will refuse to answer, because she deems them below her… it’s just very funny and incredibly Chinese.
This is like your auto mechanic telling you they refuse to fix your spark plugs. I guess I’ll just take my car somewhere else then?

我给大叔们和听众们看一个没有爱学语言者遇到的动力因素。。
锻炼脑袋对我来说是一个比较大的原因。我是退役的拳击这，在努力下打比赛几年我积累了不少的脑袋损害。虽然没有当时很严重的伤害，以后还可能会影响我认知能力。用中文锻炼脑袋，科学家觉得在理论上会创造更多神经性的能力，结果这样的锻炼吧脑袋有关的问题会变好一点。
谢谢你的分享，的确，锻炼头脑也可以是学习中文一个很好的原因，大叔们也有很多年纪大的学生用学中文来让脑袋灵活一些！
可人老师说很多有意思的事情·。有事我同意有事我不同意。
比如说我觉得外心的动力不是坏的事情。
如果你是东南亚的学生想去中国学习工作，你肯定会学习努力。8:23 可人老师说如果美国的机会来了然后学生不会学习中文。但是世界不怎么简单。人花很多年学习汉语因为他们觉得中国的经济发展让机会找跟好的生活。不只是一个工作的机会，是许多可能性的机会。让你生活机会更好真的是一个内动力！
6:23 我的老婆是中国人但是没有耐性教我中文。一开始她觉得很无聊用中文跟我说话因为什么都东西我都听不懂。但是我觉得不公平请她教我中文，因为真的很难，太多压力！现在我的目的是提高我的中文所以她可能流利的跟我用中文聊天。妻子是外心动力，但是学习中文是我的爱好。
在这两个例子你可以看外心和内心的动力都有。不很简单分手它们。
其实我觉得可人老师喜欢内心学生因为它们比较合适的她的学习方法。如果你没有外心动力 - 考试，工作机会，等等 - 传统学习语的方法其实很无聊。
西方人有钱有时间所以当然它们比较喜欢CI。但是CI未必更好。用传统方法我觉得用传统方法你可以学习词汇和句子跟快，但是你的能力听得懂中国人会比较低。

If you think Chinese people speak too fast... just play them at 0.75x speed :)
I tried it with this video, and I'm pleased that I managed to understand about 3 or 4 full sentences (after teaching myself Hanyu for just one month).
I totally agree with the motivations: I decided to learn Chinese simply because it's so darn hard on the brain, and I needed to stop thinking so much. Works like a charm.
