  • Today's cover is the sixth and penultimate song on Gaucho, My Rival.
I've never really listened to this bass line. Superficially, it couldn't be more different from the other Anthony Jackson track on Gaucho, Glamour Profession; it's a downbeat-focused bass part, featuring a hollow or semi-hollow bass played with a pick.
But there is undeniable Jackson DNA in here. The clever chromatics. The third/sixth-based soul licks. The deliberate distribution of notes and measured structure of it all. I wouldn't appreciate this nearly as much if I hadn't spent the best part of my Wednesday deconstructing his Glamour Progression masterpiece.
And it's simply fun to play on my Jack Casady signature bass, tuned to Drop D for the occasion, providing those satisfyingly chunky low quarter notes.
I also love the percussion on this one. And Rick Derringer (who apparently didn't lose that number after all) and Hiram Bullock's complementary guitar parts.
Recorded in my home studio through my Avalon U5. One whole take, captured with my Canon M50. Enjoy!
