- Since the assassination of Haiti's president, Jovenel Moïse, in 2021, the country has been in turmoil, with gangs taking control of much of the capital, Port-au-Prince. But they are not a new phenomenon.

Gangs have had a longstanding role in Haiti's political life since the 1950s. The roots of the country's hardship go back even further. Josh Toussaint-Strauss explores the historical background to the current crisis and discovers how gangs have become so embedded in Haitian politics.

French were the worst colonialists in history. Any country they touched has never recovered. It's unbelievable that up to date there are still countries that pay France reparation in one way or the other. Take a look at France overseas and you'll be shocked to realize how much land France owns and its not in France-modern colonialism
The modern day Haitians are not the indigenous people. They were not black.
USA recovered
What about canada
Haiti has a long history of political instability, corruption, and weak governance. Frequent changes in government, ineffective law enforcement, and the absence of strong institutions have contributed to an environment conducive to the rise and operations of armed gangs. The lack of effective state presence and law enforcement allows these gangs to operate with relative impunity.
Apparently some vigilante groups have been popping up in recent months to counteract the violence of the gangs. I'm not usually in favor of vigilante justice but when we're literally talking about a failed state with no government I pray that they can maintain some semblance of peace among the locals who did nothing to subject themselves to the authority of the gangs.

The people of Haiti pay the price of rebelling against their colonial overlords - France & USA
I have to wonder why Haiti agreed to pay the initial reparations at all. They just kicked the French out, so unless they were afraid of the French re-invading, you'd think they'd have simply issued a giant middle finger and moved on with their day.
They were worried about France reinvading, but also England, Spain, and Portugal all publicly said they would invade Haiti if an agreement wasn't made with France. Most European countries hated the fact that another colony was lost by revolution. They just hated it more because it was a black revolution this time. Haiti was doomed to be a flourishing country from the very start.
Having most of the world market sanction you is painful: the only ones who'd trade would either be those already with poor relations with France, or smaller opportunists. The larger powers can easily discourage the opportunists, such as through bribery and fear of retaliation. So in realist terms it comes down to how much leverage France has witn the other great powers.
because the the french and prob the u.s would invade
They threaten to shell the island from the sea.
Adding to this, this remains the status quo for countries that succeed in ousting and imperial power. Most of North Africa is no longer formally owned by France but almost all North African countries are paying France reparations.

I notice a few comments about reparations and how Haiti should have not paid the debt I would just like to add a couple things that the video did not mention the Haitians had no choice either pay the debt or die or worse also one of our recent presidents actually did call for France to pay the debt and as we see in the video he was forced out of power now this is where it gets crazy the president Aristide actually claims that when the us military flew him away he was not actually rescued rather kidnapped as he claims and then the western media said otherwise
The country is too far gone
I find it endlessly depressing that France hasnt done anything to really help Haiti. They massively benefited off slavery, Napoleon got a cash infusion thanks to the debt and France profiteered off that for nearly a century, and eventually the country really fell apart once the sugar industry stagnated as other countries produce far more sugar dropping the price. The US profited slightly during their occupation but not by much as by then the sugar industry wasnt nearly as profitable and the country already poor by that point, but at least the US has sent enough aid that it more than repays that debt and the US welcomes tons of refugees to the point that around 1 million of the roughly 15 million people of Haitian decent globally live in the US, around 1/3 of the diaspora being in the US. Compare that to the 59,000 Haitians in France, which is crazy when you take into account the fact that at least France and Haiti speak the same language.
France should pay the debt.... whatever they owe has already been paid 20 times over by Haiti to France (taking inflation into account). France saddled Haiti with crippling debt after they gained their independence. They ended up paying triple the original amount. Took Haiti 150 years to pay it off, and France basically doomed their former colony to fail as an independent nation from the start
@@sbakernyc5761 One thing I'll never understand about many Europeans is they're often pretty quick to deflect blame onto the US while trying to escape any blame for their own history.
Everyone brings up the US involvement in Vietnam but rarely bring up the fact the US was only there to uphold an agreement that was made after France suddenly pulled out of the area and left the country in a civil war and a smouldering ruin after over a century of colonialism and after abandoning the region to the Japanese almost immediately. One thing that's rarely brought up is how many of the weapons in that war were actually left there by the French.
Many people will bring up US-Iran relations and sometimes even blame the US for anti-western sentiments but they dont bring up how the US only got involved in Iranian politics for a pretty short period of time, mainly at the request of the British who along with some other European countries had a huge interest in Iranian oil. They also rarely bring up the fact that the UK and Russia invaded the country and occupied it during WW2 or the "Great Game" between Russia and the UK which involved nearly a century of interfering in Iran.
Similarly people often bring up the US invasion of Afghanistan but rarely bring up how the British and Russians had invaded multiple times or how they'd been destabilizing the region for around a century during the "Great Game" and later.
The US also gets a lot of blame for conflicts in the middle east but many experts agree that the region is so destabalized and volatile due to 1: the terrible borders the Europeans made up and 2: all the weapons they dumped in the area after WW2. The Europeans were keen to recoup some losses so both the European allies and USSR took captured German weapons and some of their own surplus and sold it across the Middle East to such a degree there are still weapons like T-34s, Enfield Rifles, and Bren guns appearing in wars like in Yemen and there have even been sightings of Panzers in recent conflicts. America soldiers in Afghanistan constantly came across old Karabiner rifles, Lee Enfields from WW1 and WW2, and sometimes even older rifles. A buddy of mine once came across a Gewehr 98 while he was station in Afghanistan after they captured some Taliban weapons.
US slavery too is often brought up while the fact the Dutch, Portuguese, and Spanish were the ones who did most of the enslaving in the New World. Only around 5% of the slaves sold in the New World ever ended up in the US with the rest going to European colonies in the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. They also tend to ignore the Corvee labor that many European countries used where natives from their colonies were used as little more than slaves, often treated worse than slaves (slaves cost money to buy, laborers just needed to be fed so were free to replace). Many of their colonies in Asia and Africa actually had industry, commerce, and infrastructure destroyed to depress the economy so the natives would be forced to rely more on their European overlords for support making labor cheaper and recruiting into their militaries easier, something that went on until around WW2.
@@arthas640of course you’re a brony
How terrible that France forced reparations on former slaves. All that money should be paid back with interest but the money should be distributed equally among every Haitian citizen with direct payments.

@@sebema6117 It is unfair but the Haitian people were paying this debt until 1947. This isn't a distant relic of the past and undoubtedly impacts the economic standing of Haiti today. As to disbursement once the situation is stabilized-which admittedly may be some time- provide the funds to each Haitian citizen directly.

Buddy... take a moment to read about the actual events. The money which Haiti used to pay reparations came from loans... borrowed from French and US banks. Imagine taking out a mortgage to pay a mortgage. They were indebted twice. The country was also invaded and occupied by the US until the loans were repaid. The last payment was made in the late 1940s. That is only 70 years ago. Within living memory. Imagine how differently development in the US would have looked if for 150 years over 50% of our GDP was taken and given to Europe. Not to mention that during that whole time the world financial system refused to invest in Haiti due to the country's low credit worthiness.
they just don't want to admit it's all about IQ
Well the debt contributed to the detriment to the economy but for sure haitians have themselves to blame. Ha. It's been tried. It's pretty incredible how when you get into the US involvement in Haiti alone, people will run as fast as they can from the conversation
Because the story is not finished. We need a collaboration of Haiti and Oppenheimer. That will be the fitting end .
My heart bleeds for Haiti. 💔
'His death plunged the country into Chaos'
Yeah sure, cause it was a shining example of a highly civilized society before that.
Don't sell yourself to a surveillance state to save yourselves. This could possibly be the worst outcome. The "behavior monitoring" needed to correct this is better done by international friends, than a robot.
They love authoritarianism. The people there are too weak for dangerous freedom in a constitutional republic.
Bingo
And the international community wants the Dominican Republic to fix this problem, France and the US should pay reparations.
Or they should first show they are capable of running a functional nation.
The US has paid over 5 Billion dollars, the country isn't a failure because of money.
Accept that the Haiti cannot govern itself
On todays episode of blaming white people for black peoples poor living conditions
It’s not complicated at all… Haiti is incapable of rolling itself through law and order.
Lol. Never their own fault
Excuses, excuses. Germany had to pay massive reparations and still managed to develop and prosper. Corruption is the root of Haiti’s problems. Full stop.
You’re right
Yes but Germany is in Europe. It is a white people country surrounded by rich nations like Swizland who also happen to be white. Germany is larger, has allies, larger population, a history.
What does haiti have? Ocean one side, ocean on all sides. A black country surrounded by white countries, no nearby allies, no history, just a barren paradise
Well said; no one wants to work for betterment - which is hard work - easier to blame others. Always excuses. Perhaps too late now to turn this country around
@@luisacleaves9592not well said, there big differences between Germany and Haiti which were already stated above.
Yeah
In the 18oo's Haiti had 96000 French and free citizens and 700.000 African slaves, figure it out from there.
Just wonder, that’s how a country full and managed by black people looks like
It’s not that complicated , the truth is these peoples genetics are different than the developed world, they act on inpulse and are more violent genetically, it’s who they are
It's not their genetics. Consider their religious beliefs and other factors.
No mate. You don’t know history. You should go and rebuild Haiti and stop stealing their resources.
American smuggled guns give the gangs more power than the goverment. Same issue in Mexico.
Glad someone in the comments finally know the truth.
Well, technically, a Russian arms dealer known as the Merchant of Death. But close enough for those who are incompetent.
Nothing new. Look at Iran-Contra
The global powers hated Haiti for being a Black colony defeating their European “betters”, and so they collaborated to hamstring it from the start.
Global powers don’t make local decisions but the many tribes in Haiti Do!
Haiti is a failed state. the old has tried repeatedly to help, to no avail
How many Nobel prizes comes from Haiti ?? How many phds, how many doctors, how many gravitational laws have been changed by the great Haitian minds ???
Is no one gonna ask why it was american mercenaries that carried out the hit?
They got paid money to do a service? CAPITALISM!
@webdevprogrammer8049 A Hatian-Chlian businessman finances two "former" American servicemen, leading 26 Columbian mercenaries. You want to tell me this wasn't a US government operation because I got a nice bridge to sell. If you do.
It’s not complicated.
Haiti is a lost cause.
The solution to the problems in Haiti. Is not for everyone to leave Haiti.
Let's focus on the real issues.
Start with Haitian democratic elections. (They will need official Identification to vote)
Stop promoting Illegal migration.
Stop financing Gang leaders.
Stop sending Firearms and ammunition.
Stop the Open airfields for drug cartels and weapons traffic.
Stop the Open seaports for drug cartels and weapons traffic.
Stop Open borders for contraband and human traffic.
Stop ONG's corruption.
Chaos in Haiti is strongly influenced by US meddling, political and military alike. Washington bears significant responsibility for it
Not my problem
Where all those guns came from? U S A is the answer that’s the reason why Ayiti can’t BREATHE.
Hati cannot be saved It needs to be made part of another country.
How about just stay out of its business.
