    You missed an important step, did anyone witch the area to see where to drill to find water? Or did you just guess and pick a convenient spot yourself? I have never seen where the side of the upper well casing was penetrated, a pitless adapter, to access the interior of the well. Why was that done? Here in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California the wells all exit from the top of the casing. Then they make a 180 and go down under the frost line, then to the tanks. That was a way cheap drilling job you got, most cost a lot more. My well is 200 feet deep, 100 feet to water, pump is at 180 feet, and I get 40 GPM. Good video and explanation on how the compressed air assists the drilling.

    • @MasonDixonAcres
      @MasonDixonAcres  Рік тому

      Thanks! The pitless adapter is to keep water below frost line all the time. Doesn't your water freeze if it's coming out the top of the casing then back down?
      Regarding the drilling spot, I talked to the driller about this - his best advice is to just pick a convenient spot that's out of the way of construction. He has worked with "water sniffers" who claim to be able to locate it and in his 20 years of drilling he said it's total bs.. but to each their own

    • @MasonDixonAcres
      @MasonDixonAcres  2 роки тому +1

      I also thought it was a very good price, the other 2 quotes I had were around 6k. Beyond the casing it is just a hole in the bedrock. I will say this company quoted me on a finished system and everything else seemed quite high - trenching, pump price, installation labor, etc. so I cut all that out and just had them drill the hole. I am procuring the rest of the stuff separately and will install myself. The well is around 120' from the house. Right now we are building a small 2bd/1ba garage house which may be added onto for a total of up to 5bd (limited by septic).

We install pumps on 1” sch80 threaded pvc in 20 ft joints, or rolls of poly for hard to reach spaces, since it doesn’t have a liner in the hole and it’s open rock you need to make sure your connections are solid so you don’t lose anything down the hole, also if it caved in some day that pipe may not pull back out of the well. You can’t set the pump on the bottom of the hole either since the motors are water cooled, you’ll need to be 10 to 15 feet off the bottom at least.

    • @jonathanmeinert
      @jonathanmeinert 2 роки тому

      @@MasonDixonAcres depending on the pumping level you will probably need a 1hp, 10gpm pump. 1hp only runs efficiently on 12/2 wire up to 400 feet total wire run. If you set the pump at 220 to 230 ft plus the ditch length and the wire run to the panel, I would run 10/2 uf wire in the ditch and from the panel to the pressure tank and down the hole you can get away with running 12/2 but you may just want 10 the whole way to carry voltage more efficiently. Two wire motors don’t need a control box, if you set a three wire pump with a control box you’ll need 10/3 with ground the whole way. Don’t listen to the electricians when they say the 10 wire needs a double 30 amp breaker. Locked rotor amps on a 1hp requires a double 20 breaker so if it goes bad it actually trips it at the panel.

    I apologize if it was explained earlier, but how did you know the property had water available to even drill when making the purchase/hiring the drill crew team? Was there a theoretical chance that a producing well would not be found? Other homesteading channels have mentioned large premiums are paid for land with a pre-drawn well, indicating not all land has pumpable water. Also, 250' sounds really deep, the property I've recently purchased has a 30' deep sand point well, that was probably pounded by hand from a single person 40 years ago.

    • @MasonDixonAcres
      @MasonDixonAcres  3 роки тому +12

      You are correct, having water available on a piece of property is not always guaranteed. There is no sure way to know you have it without drilling first. We probably could have gotten away with a well just under the water level, 100' deep. However, that does not get us any borehole storage or safety against drought dropping the ground water level. Wells in our area are typically up to 400' deep, some going up to 800' and yielding .5 gal/min. I think being on top of a rocky hill actually helped our case for finding water.

      Many use divining tricks/well witching. We dont trust in the diving method for drilling water. It is a waste of money and a ruse. We have never ever found a diviner to be accurate, ever. There are scientific methods that you can use like resistivity, seismic or deep radar.

Their quote for a complete setup was like $11k though so that's probably where they make up for their cost. Glad they were willing to separate out the drilling, I think I can run the line myself. The driller also said they have work 100% of the time, probably because of their prices.

    In Madison County, AR in 2017, I paid $12,375 for a 575ft well with pump. Still brings up brackish/red water after 5 years and I have to filter it 5 times outside (5 micron, 5 micron, 1 micron, softener, carbon canister, .5 micron filter...just to shower/laundry), then .2 micron filters inside if I want to drink it. Sucks! I change the first 5 micron filter every 2 weeks (because it's red clay dirty filled) and the others (5 micron secondary, 1 micron, .5 micron) every month. They are baleen and washable with a jet setting on the garden hose nozzle, let them dry and use them 7/8 times before they don't clean so well and through them out. AND...I have to put 3/4 quart of 35% hydrogen peroxide EVERY Saturday because the water is contaminated EVERY week and grows mold/algae even though I've sanitized it 10 times with bleach kits for wells.

      - your vein produces water. Test for it
      - Filter your water appropriately. More specifically you can put systems in that you only change filters 1 a year.
      12500 is dirt cheap for 500 feet! Are you crazy!
