HUGE fan of Nissan VQ-series engines. Owned a 6 cylinder 2007 Nissan Altima (with CVT). Bought new. Sold it with 155,000 miles. Outside of the typical oil, tires, brakes, the car operated flawlessly. No problems with the CVT. Great acceleration. Comfortable seats. Best HVAC system I've ever had in a car.
Currently own a 2012 Pathfinder, bought with 140,000 miles. So far, so good. Pathfinder gets about 15 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway, but that is to be expected from a 2012 body on frame SUV.
All that being typed, I am meticulous about maintenance and I don't race from traffic light to traffic light.

That's my favorite generation of the Pathfinder. Should last you a long time. 2012 is probably the best year with all the issues ironed out. I have an 08 with 184k. Enjoy it. Minus the gas mileage. I sure don't.

Actually, the pathfinder switched between unibody and body on frame. The first gen was based on the hard body, so it was body on frame. 2nd gen was unibody but it retained the solid rear axle. Third gen was based on the frontier, also body on frame. When the 4th gen was designed they needed something to replace the poorly selling Quest minivan, so they moved the pathfinder back to unibody. The 5th gen looks like a truck based SUV, but it's still unibody.

I owned 2 Nissans. First Nissan was a maxima and really fast car but when it had problems it had problems. I felt the problems came from the lack of maintenance from my lady not doing oil changes and just maintenance overall. Second car I currently have is a Nissan Sentra. Not the greatest looking or fast car but somewhat more reliable than the maxima. Way easier to work on from day to night and both cars had a CVT transmission that I learned from our first Nissan is to add a transmission cooler. I’m hitting 212 k and I hope I can make it last.

I've been working on cars for 45 years, and there are a lot of cars I haven't worked on or even driven... and therefore can't say anything about. It's nice to hear another mechanic that knows he doesn't know everything about everything and doesn't invent stuff to create content. I never worked on a Nissan CVT, so can't say anything bad about them either, which still may not inspire me to buy one... But if it ever came down to it, I'd want to hear from someone who actually does rebuild or replace them as to which ones are or aren't total junk.

@@EpicDrew15 A friend of mine is a design engineer. His job is to make things that work and pass duty cycle tests and real world tests... Once his machines are tested and certified, the cost reduction team comes in prior to and during production. Then he is usually sent into the field to determine why the machines fail... Most of his job at the point is reversing the cost reductions that make the machine unreliable as they fail. This process insures that every cost reduction that gets through the warranty period and standard duty is implemented and those that cause the machine to fail to early or too often get resolved. And that's on machines that cost over one million dollars each. For parts that don't fail too often there's a TSB and an upgrade kit for the field service techs to install under warranty or at customer cost down the road.

Oops. Sent above when I sneezed. The mechanic showed me two jagged rust rips approaching each other from 3 and 9 o'clock. Didn't want to find out, so I scrapped the Pathfinder in 2011 and have been the very happy owner of a 2011 Tacoma since then.

We have a '17, did the brakes a few times myself. Those power steering pumps use special fluid too. Also, I don't like the fact that this is not a dual injection system. Just GDI. Every few thousand miles, I have to run a GDI cleaner to keep intake valves from gumming up. We have 86k on the clock. Also, change, CVT, fluid, both filters every 25k.

Are you letting the dealer do your cvt fluid changes? If not, can you elaborate on your cvt fluid change process. I’ve only ever done the drain and fills. Never changed the cvt filters. Any tips you can provide?

I bought a used 2016 Nissan Versa Note. I bought it because at the time there was nothing else available. Right off the bat I started having a cvt issue. Took it to dealer and it needed a software update and fluid replacement. Works fine now , but for how long? And the feel of a cvt is weird. It took me almost a year to get used to it. Otherwise, I really like this little car. Great gas mileage! Would I purchase another Nissan? Probably not.

Some older Nissans are SOLID.. we used to have a 1995 240sx.. well built, reliable and fun to drive… after the year 2000 / after Nissan merged with Renault, their overall quality deteriorated… the most reliable newer Nissans are ones with manual transmissions..

Nissan has never had to recall their CVTs, nor has the NHTSA ever conducted an investigation into them. Nissan powertrain warranty claims also remain low. Perhaps, people aren't changing the fluid at the required intervals (found in the owners manual)?

Just found your new channel. Interesting to see how other manufactures build things. The power steering on this Nissan unusual. I try to rent Toyota when travelling but sometimes all gone so have to sell the for Nissan Altimas. Different but not as nice as Camry. Cheers 🇨🇦😎👍

My Rogue and Altima have the same engines. I have 2016 Rogue with almost 100k miles (purchased it in 2018 at 50k miles from HERTZ) and 2014 Altima with 60k miles (purchased it new). I dont step on the acceleration pedal to the floor and I rarely get to 4,000rpm. In Rogue I have changed oil myself every 10k miles and I used Mobil 1 oil and filter. In Altima, oil was changed by the dealership or Pep Boys but I gave them Mobil 1 oil and filter) every 5,000 miles but couple times every 10k miles (the first oil change was before 1000 miles recommended by manual). This Rogue was manufactured in Japan and Altima in USA. Interestingly, when I start Altima at 60-70 degrees the engine sometimes has irregular shaking and I see that on the TACHOMETER for about 3 minutes until the engine gets warmer). However, when I start Rogue cold, I dont get this issues, the engine runs smooth without jumps in TACHOMETER and when I put the hand on the engine block it does not have that irregular shake). Can any mechanic advise what could be issue. Was my vehicle sabotaged at the services. One thing I noticed that Altima engine bay has lots of sand while the Rogue engine bay is very clean. On the other hand, my sister drove 1998 Altima for 17 years and she did over 250k miles until mechanic told her car needs work with cylinders...

I bought an ‘82 Datsun 4x4 pickup new (last year of the “Datsun” badge). By the time I got rid of it the paint had peel off like onion skin from the roof and inner truck bed and had replaced the head gasket due to warpage. Only 80k miles on it. Swore I’d never own another Nissan product and still haven’t. Wouldn’t buy one with anyone’s money, much less my own.
