I know it's been a year now, (almost) but I would love to hear if there was any update, problems etc... or if this really is a plug it in and leave it forever item. I have a small stand for my devices, but it has a spot for an Apple watch only. This looks likie it would be a erfect replacement for that small issue.

Thanks for finding this. Pack of two charger cables and a tiny zip-lock of covers to go over the watch charging port. First charge worked great and restored my wife's watch to function.
When Garmin first launched the new charging port on the Fenix 5 I actually 3D printed a puck style charger and hacked/soldered an OEM garmin cable to work with it. Use case was that I wanted to re-charge while wearing it during ultra marathons and my mechanical engineering background got the best of me. Glad to see someone has actually productized the idea although it looks a little thick to wear during use! Nice video, how often do you cycle through that bin? No physio trueup on that 310XT in the bin!
This is exactly what I needed - I just bought an Instinct and simply can't believe how such a great watch, can be so let down by such a crap charging cable! I already had a new one sent by Garmin, but even so, it wobbles a little and doesn't always hold the connection. SO weird that they cocked up on such an important aspect!
I had a finicky official Garmin charging cable, and after inspecting it closely, I discovered that one of the prongs had snapped off, this has resolved my issue. I also noticed that the male connector on the watch has two small nubs designed to fit into the cable's female adapter, likely to create that secure click or snap when connected. If you're experiencing a similar issue, could try very gently squeezing the female adapter on the cable with a needle-nose plier, that could help the cable grip the watch more securely again.

More surprising, the rubber band on my Fenix 6X is shit, literally the worse I have had on a wearable/watch. Can't believe it at more than $900 bucks. A nice Garmin band is $100 USD or more.
I agree! My first watch was a first gem moto360 and that had the best charger. It was a stand that turned the watch into a bedside clock. It was great.

Qi would likely be the wireless standard to go for. It's a fairly mature standard at this point, cheap to implement, and super well supported by manufacturers and 3rd party chargers. All of this was true 5 years ago, though, so I'm not sure why these watches aren't wireless chargable currently.
Using this model and for over 5 months out of the 6 months of it's usage I have to clamp down on the part that makes contact with my Garmin Vivoactive in hopes of getting some charge. Garmin should have had this bullet proof through their R&D/Engineer departments.
Best charging solution would be magnetic two ping or induction wireless. Samsung has this on the Gear Fit 2 (magnetic 2 pin) and the Galaxy have the wireless.
I find your reviews to be the best and more detailed and unbiased, Can you Test/Review some Amazfit/Xiaomi smartwatches? apparently they have a very good price/features ratio, but they are little reviews from a more scientific and sport oriented channel like yours. I know that you are focused on more high-end and main brands, but outside of USA /Europe those ones are a bit expensive for normal users, and alternative brands are more popular.
Any follow-up on these (I'd expect the new cable to be good after the first week, my others have all been, so wondered if they eventually have the same issue as all the others).?. Also, do they work as a data cable (none of mine currentlly will connect my fenix 5 to my laptop)? I have the same issue. After 3 months of daily use the first one stopped charging the watch and just now after 4 months of purchase the second one also stopped working. Charging via the Garmin cable still works. Does anyone have any idea how to revive this or where the problem is?

WAIT! This crap is a Garmin Forerunner charging cable? My Garmin Forerunner 235WHR (which I´m using since Dec 2015) uses a clip style cable (I lost one, broke another one). So I need to keep that in mind when I upgrade to Garmin Forerunner 935 or Fenix 5 or 6.

I'm curious. Salty sweat and electricity are not friends. I had a Chinese sports watch. The charging connector is almost corroded away. Will this also happen with my Garmin? Now I rinse and dry the port before every charge because I'm afraid otherwise this port will also corrode.
No, it won't happen (or, I've never heard of it happening on a Garmin). The issue with companies using Micro-USB is that often-times those ports would 'cling' to stuff much more readily than the Garmin chargers (or other wearable-designed ports).

Not sure if anyone else has that problem with any of their garmin watches with the type of port shown in your video, but it definitely happens with mine every so many months. BTW...great, great video. Not only wicked helpful in terms of providing us a product option that I'll definitely be snatching up soon, but highly, highly entertaining. :)

It also uses its own proprietary charging connector. The connectors on the watch are made out of copper. After one year of using it, the power connectors are eaten away. Saltwater and electricity are not the best friends with some metals. But that was not the reason I bought the Garmin. The software on the Pace is a bag of hurt. The Garmin just works.

Ordered one from the AZ link actually the 2 pack, shipped and received in 4 days.. , (corona - seqself isolated it for 3 days), and tested it out today on my Vivoactive 3,... works great, just as reviewed it clips on easily and charges great,,,, much better option than the original charger cable provided by Garmin.... 2 thumbs up, and 5 stars.
They send you 2 cables as one doesn’t work right out of the package. I now have 9 Garmin charging cables that don’t work including 3 from Garmin. Their charging connection is pure crap.
garmin is a worse design for charging port. no way it can be fixed. the dumb designers are not listening to their customers. like every company who don’t listen to their customers, they loose their customers. i changed to apple watch
I'm about to order- skeptical because whether it's on a puck or at the end of a cable shouldn't matter much-it' the same connector. It may be the watch side in my case. I'm on my 3rd cable set and they all seem to lose contact, even with cleaning. Edit: looks like they're out of stock.
I live in China, quickly searched for this and have bought one for just over $2 USD. The charging cable continually gives me issues, even though it physically connects it often doesn't charge. Today it was showing the charging indicator, but after a few hours hadn't charged 1%. Cleaning the contacts fixed it, but I tend to have to do this every time I charge. There's one pin which seems to always get oxidized or something and needs a little scratch in order to make contact.
My new Fenix 7 Pro Solar Ed. Came with USB C cable. Buuuut. My computer does not have C and the adapter I had only charges. So I had to buy a cable. Wish I had seen this charger puck earlier. May have to order the pair for my cable connection. 😂
The slow pace at which Garmin adopts innovations is baffling to me. AMOLED, wireless charging... It's 2022, this isn't new tech! Garmin, step up your game!

A lot of complains these charges die after few months or weeks... it's shame and would be willing to pay a bit more for one that works for years and not get ripped off by Garmin.
I've had a bad experience with third-party Garmin charging cables cheap off Amazon. Haven't tried the one DCrainmaker is suggesting though. The Polar M200 had a great charging and data transfer system (basically using a standard USB). It wasn't a bad watch for its day (I got rid of mine because the display was kinda small compared with modern offerings and it took an age to acquire GPS on a cloudy day). Love colored cables (I hate looking into my laptop bag and seeing a mass of black wires - takes an age to find the one I need).
I have also been using these for a couple of months now. Similar price but from eBay and sent from China somewhere. The connection is so much better, it astounds me why Garmin can't get something so fundamental to just work. As an ultra runner, you can plug it into a USB powerpack and wear the puck under your watch just by loosening the strap a bit. My Fenix 5 lasts around 16 hours, and then I do this for just over an hour and it's back up to 100%. Previously I had to take the watch off and carry it while nursing the dodgy connection for that amount of time.
Hi Ray, The metal surround of the charge tip has catches on it to secure the watch & charger together. I find that by giving the charger tip a gentle squeeze (with some pliers) fixes the problem. Try that idea for a simple DIY solution :)
I have done that a few times now and works great. Also make sure the contacts are clean before you want to charge. I do remember a video where Ray was also swirling around a watch with the garmin cable, so I'm not sure other cables won't have the same problem over time.
The crocodile clip charger from my old Forerunner 235 is way better and great for charging on the go during an ultra. Any reason why this isn’t the standard charger??
The only review that mentioned 945 LTE on this Amazon page for this charger, says it does not work with the LTE, while another person confirms it works fine with the regular 945...can anyone with the LTE model confirm if this charger will work with it or not?

What i love about an s10 and active 2... you can juat charge the watch on the back of the phone while the phone charges

Wouldn't let Garmin off the hook for wireless charging. The shearwater teric has wireless charging and I wouldn't call it slow to charge at all.

Turns out standard USB doesn't allow the device to tell the power supply how much power to provide. Qualcom Quick Charge does.
I wish they'd adopt a wireless or magnetic system like most watches, the charging port is one of the worst features on garmin.

Ordered one from the AZ link actually the 2 pack, shipped and received in 4 days.. , (corona - seqself isolated it for 3 days), and tested it out today on my Vivoactive 3,... works great, just as reviewed it clips on easily and charges great,,,, much better option than the original charger cable provided by Garmin.... 2 thumbs up, and 5 stars.

garmin is a worse design for charging port. no way it can be fixed. the dumb designers are not listening to their customers. like every company who don’t listen to their customers, they loose their customers. i changed to apple watch

My decade old mouse has a cable with a woven nylon casing that I just can't let go of.
I'm about to order- skeptical because whether it's on a puck or at the end of a cable shouldn't matter much-it' the same connector. It may be the watch side in my case. I'm on my 3rd cable set and they all seem to lose contact, even with cleaning. Edit: looks like they're out of stock.
I live in China, quickly searched for this and have bought one for just over $2 USD. The charging cable continually gives me issues, even though it physically connects it often doesn't charge. Today it was showing the charging indicator, but after a few hours hadn't charged 1%. Cleaning the contacts fixed it, but I tend to have to do this every time I charge. There's one pin which seems to always get oxidized or something and needs a little scratch in order to make contact.
That table wobbling is stressing me out 😬
My new Fenix 7 Pro Solar Ed. Came with USB C cable. Buuuut. My computer does not have C and the adapter I had only charges. So I had to buy a cable. Wish I had seen this charger puck earlier. May have to order the pair for my cable connection. 😂
The slow pace at which Garmin adopts innovations is baffling to me. AMOLED, wireless charging... It's 2022, this isn't new tech! Garmin, step up your game!

A lot of complains these charges die after few months or weeks... it's shame and would be willing to pay a bit more for one that works for years and not get ripped off by Garmin.
I've had a bad experience with third-party Garmin charging cables cheap off Amazon. Haven't tried the one DCrainmaker is suggesting though. The Polar M200 had a great charging and data transfer system (basically using a standard USB). It wasn't a bad watch for its day (I got rid of mine because the display was kinda small compared with modern offerings and it took an age to acquire GPS on a cloudy day). Love colored cables (I hate looking into my laptop bag and seeing a mass of black wires - takes an age to find the one I need).
I have also been using these for a couple of months now. Similar price but from eBay and sent from China somewhere. The connection is so much better, it astounds me why Garmin can't get something so fundamental to just work. As an ultra runner, you can plug it into a USB powerpack and wear the puck under your watch just by loosening the strap a bit. My Fenix 5 lasts around 16 hours, and then I do this for just over an hour and it's back up to 100%. Previously I had to take the watch off and carry it while nursing the dodgy connection for that amount of time.
Hi Ray, The metal surround of the charge tip has catches on it to secure the watch & charger together. I find that by giving the charger tip a gentle squeeze (with some pliers) fixes the problem. Try that idea for a simple DIY solution :)
I have done that a few times now and works great. Also make sure the contacts are clean before you want to charge.
I do remember a video where Ray was also swirling around a watch with the garmin cable, so I'm not sure other cables won't have the same problem over time.
Thank you so much @Sir_Millsy. Using these same chargers, my watch kept popping out of the charger. A light squeeze has fixed it for now.
The charger with the clamp is bad too. I'll set it up to charge and comeback to find my watch dead.

The crocodile clip charger from my old Forerunner 235 is way better and great for charging on the go during an ultra. Any reason why this isn’t the standard charger??
Not sure. I wish they’d go back. I have a forerunner 245 and a 235, and the one thing that makes me want to use the 235 is the cable.

The only review that mentioned 945 LTE on this Amazon page for this charger, says it does not work with the LTE, while another person confirms it works fine with the regular 945...can anyone with the LTE model confirm if this charger will work with it or not?
I used it two hours ago to charge the 945 LTE just fine (and have been using it for months with it). No difference there.
