It felt like they were trying to redo superstore but with a smaller cast and maybe thats why I held it to a higher standard and didn't enjoy it as much but you're right about the comedy I probably laughed like 3 times during the whole 10 episodes. It also felt super fast paced to me, like there was no room to breathe there was always someone constantly talking.
YES! The only character I enjoyed was Hannah, and that's probably only because she reminds us of Shayene, which I'm sure it was intentional (not to be a clone of Shayene specifically, but the whole "naive dumb teenage girl" trope)
This is one of those shows that would actually benefit from a laugh track 🤣 I totally cannot tell which part is supposed to be funny and which is not..
We still have a video store in Tucson. I make a point to go at least once a month because I don't want it to close down. It makes me happy to talk to the employees about little known movies and usually find something I haven't seen before.
This show commits the sin of trying to bank off of nostalgia without creating characters or situations that feel truly authentic. This needed to have a much slower pace and should have had a more focused perspective
I think the character who wants to go to film school had a lot of potential for movie related jokes. I liked when he made a small clip of the balloon gorilla or his co-worker acting weird. Would've been nice to see more of that: A movie lover at a Blockbuster who dreams about becoming a director and constantly captures cinematic moments at work.
I think if the show felt more like Clerks where the first episode or 2 was a slacker crew who did more movie reference debates or conversations, it would've felt more like the classic shows we like. Then, by part of episode 2 or 3 Timmy finds out he's the last Blockbuster and starts to change things to save the franchise or their store. Then the focus becomes on either being true to yourself and connecting with your customers vs thinking corporate/micromanaging and what that balance is all while still having various movie reference conversations in there between employees. This type of trope reminds me of other classics that tread this kind of ground like Empire Records. Instead, the show uses Blockbuster as a loose backdrop to do a show about every other fabricated trope. This show took the nostalgia idea and did a bait-and-switch with it. Its not a bad show per-say but certainly wasn't what I'm sure many viewers expected.
I still remember my parents taking me and sister to blockbuster on Friday nights when I was younger. I used to sneak over to the parts of the store where I could see covers with hot girls hahaha. What a time
I agree with your assessment. I was a Blockbuster employee for 11 years, so lots of the details bugged me. (We had no break room or manager's office. The way they did inventory was insane. How are the same staff on all the time? I could go on. ) More importantly, you're right that they should have focused more on movie culture and the sense of community that existed in the stores. Like you, I enjoyed the characters and performances, chuckled now and then, but seldom laughed out loud. There's potential here, but it's indeed a mostly missed opportunity.
I think it would of been Alot better if it was set in the 90s becuause it could bring some nostalgia and also let the current generation know what blockbuster actually is
That’s a shame it looked like a fun series with a cool concept (kinda the office but in a blockbuster) I might still check it out of our curiosity though
First off at the beginning of the show when Randall said” I’ve been working here since the 7th grade. One of his employees tell him that , that’s not a Flex. We did say that back in the day. And then after they tell him Blockbuster is closing, he’s having a beer another employee tell him Something about the internet, Facebook, and TikTok. There wasn’t TikTok Back In the Day . They needed to make more Time relevant Jokes not just Old Movie Title jokes.
I really wanted to like this show, but I just saw Ted Lasso season 1 last month and it was SO much better. I’ll give season 2 another try because season 1 of The Office and Parks and Rec were also meh.
Was interested after learning about the very last blockbuster in Canada irl. It is a good premise. As for the pilot being bad, most are, especially comedic series. So I'll watch until the 2nd episode and if it's not funny enough, move on u Kno? I'll just rewatch VEEP for the 15th time. Thnx for the review
I just binged this show, and I have to say, I was disappointed... it's just not funny, and it's a shame too cuz I loved Randall Park in Fresh off the Boat, and Melissa Fumero in Brooklyn Nine Nine, so I know these actors can be funny, and I could really see them trying with the material they were giv'in, but this really wasn't it, I can't see this getting a season 2, even though I do kinda wanna see the will they/won't they relationship play out, I don't think it will get one
I like it. It’s not the best show and it’s not the worst show. It’s just fine. Expected it to be more funny since writers for superstore and Brooklyn 99 were on it but I guess not. I do hope it’s gets a second season.
even though I'd used to go to Blockbuster a lot back then this this show is like The Office but with Blockbuster even though I LOVED Netflix I'd still do miss Blockbuster
I judge a comedy series off the first 10 minutes. Blockbuster didn’t even make me a crack a smile. It’s a pass Thanks for sitting through the show so that I don’t have to 😆
I really want to like this show. So far I’ve watched till episode 3. I liked the episode with Hanna’s mom murder mystery case. Not that funny but hey, let’s remember that The Office’s first season was the weakest of all the series. Hopefully this will be similar 🤞🏼
Dude this doesn't even reach the heels of the office season 1. This is a stupid show that capitalizes on the blockbuster name and does nothing with it. It is generic and pathetic
I lived in Bend Oregon for seven years as blockbuster was getting takeover by Netflix and I was very excited for the serious and overall I’m very disappointed. They should have plotted the aeries en Bend at least
@@damonestephens8722 the drama was definitely entertaining to watch, but it felt as if this show was advertising it's hardest to be sold as a comedy, not a drama
I was expecting a show about working at a blockbuster in the late 90s early 00s , with old references and lots of blockbuster references, kinda like superstore but a blockbuster , really dissapointed couldn't get through episode 1
I was really excited for this, but it was just awful. I won’t even sugarcoat it, this was a chore to watch. I don’t remember laughing once, and I’m sick of them bringing real life issues into these shows or when they try to make a political statement. The characters were all over the place as well and just unlikable.
Ah, this is disappointing. I love Randall Park and the concept is great so I was really looking forward to this one. I’ll probably still give it a watch but at least I’ll have tamed expectations now.
Hey. Debbie downer here. I am extremely disappointed with the pilot. I found it very annoying, armature and stupid. I'm not giving it a chance. Pilot was enough of a punishment for me.
Unfortunately like the real Blockbuster franchise this show felt like a going out of business sale... everything must go type of rushed dialog and jokes that didn't even registered as pun lines... don't think I even chuckled once during episode 1. This show is not even closed in comparison to SuperStore.
Honestly the way they reference movies and pop culture stuffs in this show felt kinda…forced, the way the show Community does it way better, also what makes other sitcom actually great is when they don’t try too hard to find a punchline every minute in the show to justify it as a comedy
It’s weird how they didn’t have Hannah with a love interest. You got this smoking hot girl on the show and there’s nobody interested in her. That’s unrealistic especially when it comes to TV rules.
I find the first few episodes cheesy and was on my way to stop watching it. But as the actors get comfortable in their characters later in the episodes, that's when it becomes funny and enjoyable for me. I hope to see more weird and awkward moments with the customers in season 2. It's a retail job, there should weird customers along with some hot ones lol.
To put B99 and Superstore on the same league is offensive, but this new show shouldn't even be compared to superstore, it's so boring I watched the 1st episode in 3 parts...

To me it’s Brooklyn 99. That is my favorite show of all time.

And ye dude ur right Brooklyn is way better but superstore has a lot of character growth tho
