      There are no bullets for the main guns, and even if there were, there's a chance that the powder bags either might not work or might just blow up the turret as they were made in the 1940s

    How come they do not use this kind of ship in the Navy anymore? Are we still capable to make the shells those big guns fire? I know they retrofitted some battleship and used it during the Gulf War, so why do the same to all of the ones we have. How many people does it take to run a ship of this size? Can anybody out there give me an answer to my questions? Thank you to all who have served for this great nation of ours....

      Big, expensive to operate and they take large crews. The guns are powerful but only have a 20 mile reach.

    • @SomeRandomHuman717
      @SomeRandomHuman717 2 місяці тому

      The battleships were retired because the Navy thought they were too expensive in terms of money and manpower to operate. They were still very capable warships when retired because they carried 32 tomahawks and 16 Harpoon missiles in addition to the 16 inch and 5 inch guns. The Navy is really three different constituencies competing for slices of the "Navy budget pie": the aviators, the surface navy, and the submarine force. Guess which one ends up sucking hind tit-----surface.

    • @Matt-yg8ub
      @Matt-yg8ub 2 місяці тому

      @@SomeRandomHuman717 Ya pretty much…….The submarines always have as much funding as they could ever hope for, naval aviation is the bane of the entire US military…..They pretty much constantly demand a perfectly good aircraft get redesigned to be two or three times more expensive because they have to operate on an aircraft carrier….and surface either gets It’s budget cut…. Or suffers the ignominious insult of aeronautical engineers trying to develop naval vessels because the fighter mafia thinks they know best.
      Look at the admirals in World War II, they weren’t a bunch of fighter jocks, they were surface warfare guys we knew how to deal with fleet operations. Now fast forward to something like top gun Maverick…ALL The admirals in charge of the Pacific Fleet operations are former fighter pilots and I don’t think any of them had surface warfare experience.

      I'm pretty sure guided missile destroyers and frigates are so much more effective at land and air targets these days. Who knows what we'll be using as weapons 20 years from now. Rail guns/lasers have been in trials for some time. Rail is on hold, Laser is in production and currently being used also.

The guns have a recoil slide of up to 48 inches and the shock is distributed evenly through the turret foundation and the hull structure. The mass of a 57,000 ton ship is just too great for the recoil of the guns to move it.
